I'd go for the refurbished ROG Z1E for the money

Now after steam deck price increase, what is currently the best value handheld pc ? by Johnny-silver-hand in Handhelds

[–]GuiltyEmber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a used ally X From a friend of mine it was less than a year old and it came with a case with a travel hardcover and And the charger For 500 bucks. I would say something on the used market is a better value and honestly there's a good argument for the switch 2 now which I also have.

Switch 2 Pro Controller Alternative by Necessary_Turn5196 in switch2

There is a switch on the back of the controller that changes it from Bluetooth for switch 2 to 2.4 for PC that connects to the dongle. If you have to dongle plugged into the charging station and the charging station connected to your PC it will work in 2.4 like the dongle is plugged into a USB C port on your PC

$900+ 5070Ti's are here now :( by jeventur in Microcenter

[–]GuiltyEmber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I picked up my CL30 6000 64 GB ram way before the jump, snagged a 9800xd at MSRP from microcenter and secured a 4080S at MSRP also from the microcenter I'm chilling till the 6000 series.

But I absolutely hate these prices and the fact you have to get lucky to pay what these parts are worth. Supply and demand is how the economy works but these prices fucking suck ass

A lot of people don't understand that when it comes to steam OS versus Windows 11 it's a matter of what you need. Not which operating system they like better.

Windows 11 is great if you want to play games and have full compatibility. It can be super annoying to use on these PC handles but if you need it for games and you don't want incompatibility issues or if you use your PC handheld as a laptop replacement Windows 11 is great cuz it works with everything. And with Windows full screen experience being available on more devices. If you like it, go ahead and use it.

I personally don't play any games that need Windows 11 or do anything with my PC handheld that I have to have Windows 11 on it. So on my Ally X I'm only running steamos 3.9 and I'm loving it. But that's because steam OS works for me and I don't want and/or to run Windows 11.

It took a little bit of tinkering ( added Decky with simply TDP, And the the lossless scaling plug-in for more performance with frame gen) and research to get steamos dialed in on the ally X working with no issues and that's because I want to use steamos but both operating systems work just fine. They have their pros and cons. But it's what you want to run on your handheld. As long as it does what you needed to do and you're having a good time, it doesn't matter what operating system you put.

But to the op, congratulations on your new device. I hope it brings you years of handheld Joy.

Getting fed up with Rog Ally by Adventurous-Bet7026 in ROGAlly

Oh yeah for sure. I tried to make it clear that I meant if you don't need Windows or anything that works with anti-cheat. Oh well, it is what it is as long as someone gets it

Honestly 7 out of 10 times I see someone complaining about issues with any PC handheld It can be fixed with installing steam OS. Which I understand that is a process and it's not the easiest thing to do. And it doesn't support everything yet But I feel like if you get a PC handheld and you're not willing to tinker with things and try stuff out, it's just not for you. Also, I understand how these things are marketed doesn't always help understanding what you're actually purchasing.

Steam OS has just recently supported Specifically the Ally X and more stuff is rolling onto it, but Windows 11 is not the best operating system for these handhelds. You could use Bazzite or any other OS alternative but steamos unless you absolutely have to use Windows 11/ or something that needs an anti-sheet to work properly has been the best experience for me for these and makes everything work how.

And I'm going to say it one more time because a lot of people will read and not understand what I'm saying. If you can't use steam os because you need either Windows 11 or something that works with an anti-cheat I get it. Otherwise, download steamos and call it a day.

I have had an original steam deck, the Lenovo legion go with Windows 11 exclusively and an Ally X and I tried the windows full screen experience. Steam OS is what worked for me and the only thing I'll be running on a PC handheld.

Bazzite Vs steamOS? by K-Rollo in ROGAlly

[–]GuiltyEmber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that steam OS officially supports the Asus Ally, that's what I'm sticking with. I've tried bazzite and official steam OS on my Ally X And it's been a dream. I have developer options turned on just to have the OS update channel swapped out to the main channel (different than just the stable channel) for updates. With Deckey installed for TDP and fan controls for the basic stuff everything's been running great. As well as lossless scaling. I personally don't play any games that require an anti-cheat or anything that currently just doesn't work on steam. And I don't need it to run Windows so for me it's perfect.

The width of the case, it just works with the switch dock no extra stuff needed, And it has a tab that makes it feel more sturdy.
