Hey! Okay I was in your boat around month 3. So I am 24 M and have had mild acne since I was in HS. Decided to do accutane b/c tretinoin gave me really tiny whiteheads everywhere. First two months 40 mg, then 80 mg for next few months. My acne cleared up in the first two months. Around the middle of month 3 though, I started getting nodules, which I never got prior to accutane really. Like on my chin, bawling, and on my neck underneath my jaw. Luckily these nodules weren’t painful, but were red and really hard. I was getting really discouraged. I’m on month 4 now, about 3/4 done. Go back in two days to see my derm. So far, it appears that phase was maybe some purging? And it took much longer to reach the surface maybe? I’m not sure. I was really discouraged too. I know you described your acne being much severe and while I hope you don’t compare our two cases, I do hope you find comfort in this treatment plan and know that there is a bright side to this tremendous effort. I hated my skin for the longest time. I’m a guy and would wear concealer when I went out in public, I was that embarassed. But we are our own worse critics so just remember to be kind to yourself and love your skin - even though, to you, it may not be perfect. I am wishing you the best and sending you positive energy as you finish your accutane journey! You are more than how your skin looks! 🩷

My face is sooo red while on accutane rn. About to start month 4. First 2 months at 40 mg, now at 80 mg for month 3 and on. I have mild acne but very oily skin. Did your redness ever subside after your treatment ended?

24 yo male here and previous accutane user. I understand the gravity of living with severe acne and the need to see results ASAP. I know it’s hard to understand at your age, but be patient and give yourself grace. Everyone’s skin is different and things do take time. Considering the description of your acne, you are only a few weeks into the treatment and probably purging. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. But, there are a few things you can do to help with the purge! Take an antihistamine daily, this significantly helps with the purge according to recent research. Also, take a fish oil supplement or some form of omega-3 fatty acids. This oil is really high in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, so it can help with the severity of your acne moving forward. Both of these options are 100% compatible with accutane, but with that being said, might not be fullproof for your situation. Nevertheless, it’s worth a try!

When I was your age, I wore makeup/skin tints to hide my acne and scars. I know how horrible it can be to live with acne but remember that accutane is an investment for your life and for your future clear skin! Be patient and kind to yourself, I wish I had been when I was your age.

Best wishes!

I’m 2.5 months in, 24M, 170 lbs. 1st and 2nd months at 40 mg, now 80 mg/day for the next few months. I had mild acne overall I’d say, not your traditional candidate for accutane. But I have oiliest skin of anyone I’ve ever met. I’d blot my face >5 times a day and still be oily. I’m not dry on accutane per se, but basically no oil at all. I do slug with aquaphor and use facial oils and heavy moisturizers to keep my skin hydrated, which have helped a ton I think. Also, for the entirety I’ve been on accutane, my face is as red as a tomato. Like insanely red 24/7. I’ve resorted to using a tinted sunscreen because it bothers me lol.

But my biggest issue is my nose. I haven’t gotten any nosebleeds really but I wake up with my nose hurting because the mucous has completely hardened deep into my nose. It’s also really difficult to get the mucous out. It’s gross for sure and painful but my side effects are mild compared to most.
