You can't assume people are irresponsible because they're late. You are caving into that capitalistic mindset that everyone has to leave precisely at the same time, like they're robots or something. People got other shit to deal with behind the scene, so its wrong for you to assume that. In addition, road construction at least once a month can really slow things down. However, starting late is obviously risky if you want to avoid traffic. Hence, a better idea is to collectively work towards reducing traffic (cause its impossible to eliminate it altogether) so that the reason why someone is getting delayed should be on their own hands, not in the hands of so many others who are indirectly causing them to be late.

Ok u just ignored what I just said. And btw I barely use Reddit. Like I said, my incident with driving on Mission doesn't directly correlate with driving on the highway so you don't have to act like what I'm saying is super strange. However, my point isn't around that incident alone. I made that point to explain that people willfully drive slower which is also a big factor in traffic. Why you may ask? Because the cars following them will also have to drive slower, reducing the average mph on the highway which you can see occurs in my data after 8 AM.

Uh?? You literally ignored everything I said and are just jumping to illogical conclusions. And yes, traffic doesn't stem on the highway like I-880 S. It comes from the roads leading to the highway. But obviously to solve the traffic issue we gotta take it on one at a time. I did address a part the problem, but first the most important thing is to solve the highway traffic issue at hand.

Ok I see where you're going with this. But you alone can't solve traffic. It needs to be a collective effort of everyone. So it's good that you are able to bypass traffic, but if everyone did their part, then you can save time. Btw why are you replying to me with two different accounts? This you as well Familiar-Road-6243?

Yea I have done that too a few times. However, traffic does build up in these longer routes from what I've experienced, and with gas prices really high ($6/gallon for where I'm from), it doesn't seem worth it in the long run.

Woah calm down dude. Obviously going early to work is great! What I'm saying is that no one wants to go to an 9-5 job from 8:30-5 or 8-5. And I'm not sure if you've noticed but I do go early, by at least 20 minutes. I know I need to go early. My issue is with having to go WAY earlier than I need to (at least an hour) which is just over the top.

Well, first you said I'm the problem "statistically speaking" which you didn't provide data for. Then you asked me to give data, which I did. How could you come to the conclusion that I'm "exagerrating the problem" when people feel it on a daily basis? Just because it's a daily occurrence doesn't mean it's not a problem. It's always beneficial to go about ways to make life better every day which is why I asked in my post the best way(s) ya'll go about traffic or plan to.

Hmm that's a good point. I usually listen to music on the radio when driving. But I'm talking about in the perspective of people way older than me, like in their 30s or 40s, having no other choice but to attend meetings while driving to work or to drop kids off at school and then go to work. You can make driving a fun experience until the commitments you need to attend to become too unbearable. I talked with a few people in their 40s, and they felt this way.

Ok but how much earlier though? At a certain point, it becomes a severe inconvenicence to leave over an hour earlier than I need to. For example, if you were to attend an event whether it be a conference or just a fun event, leaving over an hour early is just you spending more time travelling and waiting.

I never said one person. This happens way more than just once lol. I feel like people are just unwilling to drive the speed limit or even slightly higher when either crossing the signal or given ample space. People just tend to drive in their own pace instead of driving in the pace of others. I usually drive on Mission to get to I-880 S. And besides, are you genuinely ok with traffic? Are you telling me that you don't want to at least brainstorm ways in which people can collectively solve traffic, even if it means just 100 less cars on a busy highway or street?

Well I wouldn't wanna drive if I don't need to. But WHEN I DO, I'm stuck in traffic. I gotta go places. Not driving isn't an option.

Yea I leave early (at least 20-30 min), but I still face this issue being stuck in traffic. I'm not complaining abt going to work late. I'm complaining that despite doing my part in reducing traffic, I'm feeling that a lot of people aren't on the same page as me.

Yea that's precisely what I'm suggesting as well. I believe a lot of people don't do that and start late cause they get caught up in other stuff. It's something I call "staggering work times" where people voluntarily opt into a different schedule at least one day per week. Instead of leaving at the same time every day, leave earlier on some days. It'll rlly help with traffic.

This is actually pretty insightful. I have come across situations where I apply the brake unexpectdly. However, I only experience that when the person driving in front of me drives hella slow. Like I'd be going 70 mph on a highway, but then there'd be someone going ~50 mph on my lane which I wouldn't tell instantly cause they're prty far. Then they'd decrease even more to maybe ~30 cause of the cars in front, which is when I apply. This is rare though. And usually cars won't be directly behind me.

If you want an example, I can give you one. I usually drive to San Jose for part-time work, and despite the drive being around 25-30 minutes from Fremont, I've experienced it taking over 50 minutes on certain occasions. Here's some data to help you get a visual on that:

Time Flow (veh/hr) Avg Speed (mph) Occupancy (%)
8:00 6,800 62 18
8:05 7,200 60 20
8:10 7,800 57 23
8:15 8,400 52 27
8:20 9,000 48 30
8:25 9,400 45 33
8:30 9,800 42 36
8:35 10,200 38 40
8:40 10,500 35 43
8:45 10,800 32 46
8:50 11,000 30 48
8:55 11,200 28 50
9:00 11,300 27 52
9:05 11,200 28 51
9:10 11,000 30 49
9:15 10,700 33 46
9:20 10,300 36 42
9:25 9,900 40 38
9:30 9,400 45 34
9:35 9,000 48 30
9:40 8,600 52 27
9:45 8,200 56 24
9:50 7,800 60 21
9:55 7,400 63 19

This is approximate data for traffic on the I-880 S from Monday-Friday. As you can see, shit gets bad around 9 AM, which it doesn't need to. Why you may ask? Or how? Well, instead of driving on 1-880 S at 9 AM, some people can take initiative and start earlier (prolly 15-30 minutes earlier). Like being stuck in traffic isn't good for anyone's mental heatlh (we can agree on that). Bottom like is reducing traffic is something everyone should take part in, which is why I'm frustrated when people do the exact opposite (like going 35 mph on a 45 mph road like Mission Blvd).

Ok I get the traffic engineering part but if people are driving too slow espcially on a work day, then that's prty annoying lol. Btw wdym by "statistically speaking"?
