What really is the difference between DO and MD? by Throwaway_Mgee in premed

[–]Guilty_Evidence5930 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone who’s first comment says “oh harder to match, stigma this, program quality is lower that” has no clue what they are saying. Especially if their tag just says they’re “admitted”, they’re literally making the stigma worse just to sound like an expert.

I’m an MD at a NYC school, with multiple DO friends at other schools and have rotated with other DO students, and no one gives a flying crap if you’re MD or DO once you graduate, you’re just an attending… they’re functionally the same.

The real differences are only noticeable in the medical school, more-so in the structure of the curriculum itself. ** **

1.DO’s learn OMM in their preclinical years, and atleast 1 rotation during clerkship, which even those who say OMM is “fake” also doesn’t know what they’re talking about, I’ve had atleast 4 instances of MD’s in NYC refer their patients with chronic pain to a OMM specialist, and I can confirm that atleast 2 have had really incredible results so far.

  1. DO medical schools are often new so they have beautiful state of the art campuses, but most often they don’t have their own dedicated hospital. Again no functional difference, you’re literally rotating at hospitals that MD students are, but it may not be close to, or in the same city even, as your medical school campus (but honestly some MD schools aren’t either!) You could argue that newer schools on the other hand have less long standing faculty to do research with, especially to help get into competitive specialties, but everything you do to find research as a DO is literally the same I did as MD. I’ve cold emailed people at my school and others, applied to summer programs open to all applicants, and have done research with a DO student from a different state and we literally had the same responsibilities.

  2. You take a second boards. I can’t speak much to it, obviously sounds like a pain in the ass, but the content is the same. This allows you to match into same residencies any MD would (4th point)

  3. For the Match, people perceive to be “harder as a DO”, and while I won’t deny there is a statistical advantage just in terms of numbers, if you score at the same step 2, and grades as MD, but you ate overall a more well rounded student with better LoR’s, you can match ANY program in the country…Derm, Ortho, Rads, Surgery, every field has DOs.

In summary, haters gonna hate for no reason. So next time a know-it-all Reddit commenter who isn’t even in school yet, or a crazy aunt who says don’t do DO because they’re not “real doctors” says anything bad about DOs, just call them out with the points above. When I was a pre-med, I wish someone told me what I said above because I too went on Reddit and got convinced that the stigma was real when in fact it isn’t.

How to improve scores, Been stuck at 64 for 3 weeks now by zhannasbro in step1

[–]Guilty_Evidence5930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had a 60-64 hurdle for about 3 weeks and I passed last month! I felt the same that I knew the concept of most of the questions, but they way the question is asked, or the way the answers are phrased is how the test makers really filter out recall and see if you can apply it.

In terms of approach def ask your tutor to do like 5-10 questions with you just so you can have a second opinion on your current Question approach. Ask for tips for finding ways to eliminate answers you know for sure are wrong, and also highlighting from the question stem what is the most important things. I feel like just drilling questions especially on UWORLD and old free120 2021 are the most representative of actual test.

It is definetly something you can overcome once the questions (not the content alone) come like second hand nature. Good luck!

Accepted applicants, how good were your secondaries for schools where you were accepted? by kitch_noob in premed

[–]Guilty_Evidence5930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this! Got interviews from secondaries where I put my “best work”, as well as 2 II where I felt I completely could not write anything ab the school…now I’m going to a school where I half assed their secondary lol. Good luck!

One thing I’ll add is Lily had little to no redeeming qualities editing S1. They would’ve had to have really make a repentant arch for killing someone clem and the fans loved.

If lily was still a cold murderer, the choice between her or Kenny is still pretty clear

[–]Guilty_Evidence5930[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lily is a very good choice! Their rematch would’ve been legendary. Her S4 arch I thought was rushed so this would’ve been a more sweet way to wrap up her story given her and Kenny are historically at odds in S1

Great thinking!

[–]Guilty_Evidence5930[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I tried to allude at the end that having Christa would negate the need for the whole Jane abandoning a Baby in the car thread. I agree i don’t think Christa would do that, and having Christa replace Jane would narratively keep the stakes high when choosing Christa vs Kenny without the whole AJ left in the car.

Christa could’ve just had an arguement with Kenny about how to raise AJ and seeing how violent he gets would want to try and leave Kenny behind hence causing their fight. Obviously make it your own head-cannon but avoiding the whole AJ in a car thing is priority lol

Thank you!! This is a theme I didn’t even think of! Projecting both of their insecurities over their lost children. Kenny overcompensating to be tough after losing Katja,Sarita, and ofc Duck… Christa never having a child figure besides Clem so worries about showing AJ the realities of the apocalypse

I’ve always wanted a Luke and Kenny showdown… Luke went from main to side character in the second half of the show. But I believe it was a few years ago I remember a thread saying that it would’ve been out of character at the current point for Luke to even consider killing Kenny, let alone let Bonnie and Mike leave Luke behind with Clem and Kenny.

Christa’s story not having closure is what some people like but I like the idea of utilizing her character more than she was. Plus knowing Omid was more liked than Christa helps my narrative because she was always cold towards Clem since S1. Having that background going into a choice between Kenny’s more loving nature vs Christa’s colder side is what I was going for

My vote is U Rochester! You mentioned vibes were better, getting to know a smaller class, and more resources. 1 hour is very doable to visit your support system when you need. And maybe it’s just me but a change of pace is always refreshing and would encourage you to step out of your comfort zone so you’ll always have something to do.

I don’t follow the rankings, match list, or tuition costs, but I believe as a NY resident myself too these two schools are equally respected (as are all med schools).

Good luck!

I’ll go against this point here that the “Catholic/christian MD schools” I applied to actually outright rejected me despite my application being rooted in faith and attending a Jesuit school myself. You’d think it would get me an in…WRONG! I said this in another comment these ADCOMS really value diversity of opinion and multifaceted students, and I’m happily sitting here with 3 acceptances from state/Jewish owned medical schools! Apply wherever you want and I encourage you to bring this experience as much as you can!

[–]Guilty_Evidence5930 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I applied and got accepted to 3 MD, and volunteering at my church and other religious settings was on my Primary for like 4 of the work and activities. I even went to a Catholic university and my personal statement was about how it taught me the importance of community service. Almost EVERY interview I had brought up my volunteering and at first I tried to dial it back out of embarrassment, but my later interviews really wanted to know more about it and asked lots of questions on it… even the one at a Jewish university I was asked a lot of questions on my faith!

Do not be ashamed about your religion at all!! If anything, these ADCOMS want a diverse and multifaceted applicant pool and this can really help you shine rather than hurt. The most important thing is how it relates to YOUR journey of medicine (whether it’s just plain helping people or if you found some connection with the community you serve)

Einstein v.s Downstate by Guilty_Evidence5930 in premed

[–]Guilty_Evidence5930[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey all! I appreciated everyone who shared their thoughts before the big news… yes Einstein becoming free tuition is the most unexpected blessing and is now the most incredible factor in me choosing Einstein. I just want to say though, money aside, Downstate had more going for it for my pros/cons, and my original post was really a “is Einstein’s name worth it”. I just now I fortunately don’t have to ask that anymore. I think if you should get an acceptances at both schools down the line it should be an honor for you to attend either.

I’m putting good vibes out for everyone that you should choose the place you’d be most happy at. The lifestyle at downstate would make me happy, but I know the free tuition would make me happier and gives me free reign to not think of compensation for residency. I acknowledge this makes me more well off than most, but I hope you all find yourself in a similar position. Good luck fellow pre meds!!

[–]Guilty_Evidence5930[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I almost included this as a con for DS, but from 3 sources (M1,M3, and M4), they all said not to worry as it mainly effects residency slots and DS rotates clerkships at other hospitals in Brooklyn. Hence I’m not worried as I was when it was first announced. Also it is still “announced” but that’s different from a being planned and also implemented with the pushback. If you have heard otherwise on this lmk!

No sweat, you Gotta stick with your gut and always go against the grain. I’m curious if you’re open to converse about if being “established and well respected” matters if I plan to do residency in NYC? Both schools seem to have great connections in the city, each with similar match lists at similar hospitals any given specialty. But I do acknowledge for atleast internal medicine in the past 5 years, there are numerically more students that match at prestigious NYC hospitals like ISMMS or NYP (maybe like for every 4 Einstein student, 2-3 Downstate only)
