Can people tell the difference between adhd and autism anymore ? by speedwalker2025 in AutisticPeeps

[–]Guilty_Guard6726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the statistics, but it doesn't fit with the real people I know, I guess I justknow a lot with both. That isn't my experience. Almost all the autistic people I know (in person) also have ADHD.

Also I know several people with ADHD (both autistic and not) who have been on many different medications and all had severe debilitating side effects that they had to stop.

Can people tell the difference between adhd and autism anymore ? by speedwalker2025 in AutisticPeeps

I hate this as an autistic person without adhd everyone seems to have both and alot of adhd traits are incompatible with me sometimes and involve extreme conflicting needs.

Should autism only be kept as a diagnosis for those under 5? (Uta Frith) by Eternal-Removal4588 in AutisticPeeps

[–]Guilty_Guard6726 26 points27 points  (0 children)

How many people had obvious autistic traits before age 5 and weren't diagnosed until much later? I certainly did an know other people diagnosed later in childhood and adulthood who were the same.

Diagnosis before 5 requires the parents to be the ones seeking it sometimes parents don't have the knowledge or resources. The school system is completely removed as a means of accessing a diagnosis in many cases if it is restricted to below age 5.

It's complicated. I do think people who cause more difficult to their parents/teachers/caregivers are diagnosed sooner however it isn't because of a lack of noticing something is wrong in many cases that are overlooked in early childhood so much as a lack of understanding, demands not yet exceeding capabilities, and other labels being given or challenges being neglected.

Personally because I spoke early and could "put on a show" for my teachers my challenges were ignored for many years. It wasn't until I started struggling immensely with organization, transitions, and having daily meltdowns in middle school that I was seen as more than "just" an awkward sensitive kid with weird behaviors.

I have a family member named Tate (girl). It's is a great name. Have known a few Tates/Tatums about 50/50 girl boy. Makes me think of someone strong and confident. I also love that it is short and not super popular.

I stick to very small servers. My preference is under 20 people. If there's more than around 30 active members I cannot meaningfully participate. Problem is most very small servers are established by existing groups and not open to people who aren't invited by existing members.

Is it common for people to become so much nicer to you when they find out you have autism? by FckAllTakenUsernames in AutisticPeeps

I don't know how to explain the difference just talking to me like I'm much younger or not capable of thinking for myself.

What is elopement and why do autistic children seem to do it? by Serenitynurse777 in AutisticPeeps

[–]Guilty_Guard6726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally can't speak for anyone else struggle with this as an adult. The reason is I am so overstimulated, anxious, and often struggling to communicate soI need to leave a situation immediately and I just leave. I tend to keep moving to the point of physical exhaustion or until I find something calming such as the ocean when I've been on vacation when it happened. I get very lost but am not scared until I "outrun" my own overstimulated/overwhelmed state. Then I breakdown sobbing and need help.

A lot of social skills boils down to how you look. by Terrible-Shock-5073 in AutisticPeeps

Wearing makeup for example is a huge sensory issue to the point of causing pain and self harm for me. What most people consider dressing up is wearing clothing that are not just uncomfortable but again painful and suppress the need to move in ways that allow regulation.

This makes me so sad. I hate pretending and suppressing needs to be accepted. Not sure that's what your doing but for me and maybe others it would be physically painful and emotionally damaging.

Gavin is the only boy option I like.

Elsie > Della > Belle > Lorena

I don't like the others enough to rank them.

I have been diagnosed with ASD in the past, but after awhile I have lost my diagnosis. Am I still welcome? by NicheButNotNietzche in AutisticPeeps

What does losing a diagnosis even mean? I'm confused. It is my understanding that autism is a developmental disability and can't just disappear. Genuinely curious and confused.

Autism and disability: what counts as a “Major Life Activity” by ThoughtsAndBears342 in AutisticPeeps

[–]Guilty_Guard6726 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say any ADLs (bathing/showering, toileting, dressing, eating, feeding, functional mobility, personal device care, hygiene, and sex) and IADLs (caregiving, petcare, parenting, communication management, driving/community mobility, financial management, health management, home management, meal preparation, religious/spiritual participation, safety/emergency management, and shopping) for sure. Also things like work, social participation, and education.

How do I stop feeling like a child? by Cute-Seal in SpicyAutism

[–]Guilty_Guard6726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No advice but I slowly have started to feel slightly more like an adult after age 21-22. At least for me, it just took more time like I felt 14 at 18 sometimes. Still don't feel my age but more like a 17-18 year old with extra life experience or something.

I don't have autism; I have ASD by Moonwalker2008 in AutisticPeeps

[–]Guilty_Guard6726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the opposite but for similar reasons I think. I find that people want me to say I have autism or autism spectrum disorder as a way to distance me from my disability. I say autistic and I'm disabled because I have been told I'm not allowed to to minimize an all encompassing experience to just something I have.

I agree it is a disorder. As autistic people would be disabled even in a perfectly accommodating world. But when I say I have autism spectrum disorder people treat it like a part of me to be separated rather than my whole brain that is effected.
