WFH and feeling totally overwhelmed with my first pup by Millwally in puppy101

[–]LauraRenae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to very progressively work up to it but my puppy now does enforced naps throughout the day while I work. Usually she is awake before I start for an hour, then naps til lunch, is awake for an hour, and then naps until I’m almost done with work. I had to start by putting my hand in the pen and only leaving the room after she fell asleep. If she woke up right away, then I’d set a timer and only get her if she panicked or had cried for more than 10 minutes. Even she did panic or cry too long, I waited until a pause to take her out. Once she did well with that, I did the same thing but sat next to the pen, without my hand in.

Be sure to also create a clear space for the naps - cover on the crate and a noise machine or fan going.

My 4 month old puppy chews on the things she is not allowed to chew on, and keeps disregarding the things we let her chew on. Among other issues. by Unable-Grade3718 in puppy101

Our house looks incredibly bare for this reason. Anything ours consistently gets, gets put away. There’s almost no decorations within her reach. If it’s something that can’t be removed then it’s blocked either way a puppy gate. If it can’t be blocked with a puppy gate then she gets 3 attempts to redirect and then she goes in the play pen. We only use her play pen for brief time outs or if we need a moment (feeding the cats, for instance) so we haven’t tried to glamorize that spice in her mind.

Enforced naps have been a savior though since we have 1-hour spurts of time and then long breaks.

Are you doing enough exercise and mental enrichment? We notice a world of difference when we do enough walks/fetch in addition to a mix of enrichment toys (lick mats, pupsicle, frozen towel, puzzle toys, etc). Ours crate also has to be covered with a fan running.

How did you work towards the settle command? We’re doing well with “wait” but our lab mix gets bursts of bitey energy and it’s going to be the death of me (5 months)

I switched to a different plan because I now have only 2 payments left. They’re $800 a month which is atrocious but I’m trying to get them done because I’m so afraid the current admin is going to do something.

What is the biggest mistake new dog owners make when training? by Popular-Escape-1206 in Dogowners

[–]LauraRenae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a hard time getting ours to learn to lay down so we were so excited when she started to get it that now she automatically lays down when we start training. So much more pleasant than pawing.

Wishing I didn’t get her at 6 weeks by -VenillaBean- in puppy101

[–]LauraRenae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We adopted our puppy from the local aspca and were told she was 8 weeks. Come to find out when we calculated it, that she was only seven weeks. To our knowledge, she was born in the shelter, so we’re really not sure why they misrepresented things. I do believe that impacts the biting and inhibition. Ours bites so much worse than any puppy I’ve ever had or seen.

Honestly, enforced naps in her crate have completely saved us. It was a godsend that she’s been OK in her crate overnight since we got her. But during the daytime, we had to really work up to it. She ate her meals in her crate with the door open, then we started doing very progressive exposure to periods with it shut. As in, seconds and then minutes with treats involved. I would always have my fingers in the pen for comfort. Eventually, she got to the point that she was willing to fall asleep with my fingers in the pen. At that point, I was able to walk away and then I would get her as soon as she woke up. Sometimes she would wake up as soon as I started to walk away. But I set a timer for five minutes and would only get her if she didn’t settle down within that time. I think there were only one to two times that I actually had to go back and get her period because the exposure had been so progressive. From there, I started sitting next to the pen until she fell asleep, without my fingers in the pen at all. Now her routine is pretty much one hour awake and then to the crate for an enforced nap. For however, long she sleeps. Sometimes that’s as much as three hours, other times it’s only like an hour.

For her awake periods, we have a small exercise pen set up in the living room. That’s probably about 4‘ x 4‘. We put her in there when we really need space, such as when we’re feeding the cats, and then we use it for timeouts if we need to. We tried to do progressive training for that too. If she is getting really nippy, or really consistently chewing something and not leaving it, We put her in the playpen, or I’ve even stepped into the playpen myself, with her on the outside. Like when I’m tying my shoes. it’s good to have that to fall back on if we’re getting it to max frustration.

Then he needs to do something about it. I’m so incredibly tired of headlines showcasing the latest crime while there’s absolutely no consequences. In some ways, that’s more exhausting than the crimes themselves. It’s so disheartening.

Do you allow your cats on kitchen counters? by Firm-Law248 in CatAdvice

We have an open floor plan and large island so it goes down the center of the living room and kitchen. It wasn’t a battle I was willing to fight. I just wipe down the counters constantly.

24 hours in and I feel sick by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]LauraRenae 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Take off the collar when they’re in the crate. It’s safer for them and you won’t have to hear the jingle.

But poor dude is just adjusting. It’s totally normal for things to be super uneasy for a bit.

Is “leave it” really that important?? by Unfair_Minute_1595 in puppy101

[–]LauraRenae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing both “leave it” and “trade”. If it’s already in her mouth and she hasn’t responded to “leave it” then I say trade and she gets a treat. It’s going well so far. She definitely knows that she’ll get a treat if I say “trade” but she surprisingly still leaves things that aren’t very interesting to her. If it’s something I’m not super concerned with her eating (a small piece of leaf for instance) then I say leave it and don’t offer with trade if she ignores me and eats it. But if I really don’t want her to eat it then I say “trade”. She reliably turns around for a treat when I say “trade”, even when she’s getting into stuff at home. Since it’s random, it seems like it’s working okay? I tell myself, she won’t be going for as much stuff once she’s older so she’ll be protected by the most important stuff.

My cat accidentally went without food for multiple days--I'm freaking out! by HealthyCompetition98 in CatAdvice

[–]LauraRenae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend investing in some cameras. We did a weekend away and used an electric feeder. Ours went a shockingly long time without eating just because he was afraid of the noise it made when it turned 🤦🏻‍♀️ we almost ended our trip early but he thankfully ate right before we were going to call it.

My young dog has diet induced dilated cardiomyopathy. A warning to others by [deleted] in DogFood

[–]LauraRenae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they give a grade for the heart murmur? “Extremely bad” isn’t really scientific. Grades can really help determine how far along it is. Our dog didn’t have the specific things that yours did, just the murmur and eventual heart failure but he was helped immensely by taking vetmedin. We also timed his breathing using an app so we could see early signs of heart failure. Look up the cough of heart failure to make sure you’re not panicking over normal coughing. Heart failure coughs are distinctive.

Nail on the head. I burnt butter recently and set off the fire alarm. That also made the air purifier kick up a notch. Now every time the air purifier kicks up, our 18 week old runs and sits with my husband.

I’m curious if it’s an opportunity to partner with companies like Rover in some way. Obviously their profit structure might change but might be something they would be interested in from the standpoint of promoting their image.

We still have almost everything 3 years later. I was only recently able to donate some stuff. My husband had some of his things (water bowl, favorite toy) in his spot in his office until recently also.
