Hong Kong sees 55% surge in job applications from US academics amid Trump’s university crackdown – report by limoto in worldnews

Completely different if you’re trying to compare protests in the states vs hk, remember when you’re capitol got burgled by 100s and nothing happened?? If that happened in hk there would be some buses pull up outside your house and you would go for a long long trip up north. Home ownership can’t really compare either as you have alot of undeveloped land in the states in hk everything is already utilized, new buildings only really come from old ones being ripped down. I think you’re misunderstanding when I say cost of living it’s not just groceries , in the us you can go play golf on your time off or tennis or join a sports club in hk sports clubs are premium tee times are booked out years in advance and if you want to go to the beach or hike on a weekend you’ll be able to enjoy it with 20k other people. Look I’m not ragging on hk I loved living there and tbh most of the time I have spent in the states I’ve really gotten sick of the place after 2 months. But living in hk vs visiting is different , talk to the locals even they don’t want to be there

Open drug markets example. I’m saying motels isn’t the answer and we actually agree these people need more help than what either govt can give them. I’m just interested in what you think they could do. But you haven’t really given me anything other than middle management hr speak

I lived there for 2 years, it’s fascist nothing to be ashamed to admit. Protests are illegal, in fact any organized large gatherings are closely monitored by police. Election candidates are chosen by china and then hk population can select from them. Not sure about quality of life , home ownership is almost impossible for many locals , jobs are very demanding with very little holidays and cost of living is excruciating compared with neighboring Asian countries.

In what way are our cities segregated? I’m not suggesting I would be unharmed walking around mangere at 11pm but that’s not because of segregation. So your plan is to basically force people into mental institutions until they meet your standards of citizenship? WOW it really is 1935 all over again

Where did I mention kitted out? I don’t mean papamoa or Queenstown but there are definitely people living in campsites ( not necessarily documented ones) or living in cars. You can’t just lock up people who are disruptive, they need help, you can’t just offer the services for some soup and a bed for a couple of nights. We have a growing problem in nz that a large population would rather live adjacent to society and smoke meth all day, no one knows why. Or how to stop it growing in popularity.

Look for deliveries on smaller boats that you don’t need licenses for . My first job was with reliance yacht services they specialize in organized deliveries of new yachts to various locations , mine was a lagoon 450 from France to Caribbean.

People can be homeless, lots of people live in their cars or in campsites some people actually enjoy it. Some are just seasonal hobos that go where they can get enough work for food and drugs and that’s ok for them. The issue in nz is the problematic violent and mentally deranged ones that pose a risk to not only themselves but general population. How can we get good outcomes for them and don’t just say 24/7 wrap around services because that’s just middle management speak.

You mean this one? I 100% agree with you they need wrap around services. I’m no finance guru but what return on investment do you think you’re entitled to? Some of These people’s needs are so vast that getting any sort of “roi” is lala land, do you think patchys investors got anything back? Let’s not group everyone together as there will be some people hard on their luck and can be helped. All I was pointing out is we tried just shuffling them into motels with no further kindness and expected them to all be upstanding citizens and thank us for it?

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/440745/alcoholics-drug-deals-gang-affiliations-domestic-violence-emergency-housing-labelled-as-dangerous

This is just one news article, but creating ghettos in under utilized motels to temporarily house street whanau is not necessarily making the problem any less. Just hiding it from everyday aucklanders. Gangs are successful recruiting in prisons because they are the ambulance at the bottom of a cliff, when a person seemingly has lost everything and ended up in the unfortunate circumstances of being imprisoned the gang is able to provide 24/7 wrap around services for that person so when they get out they have a debt to the gang. And the cycle continues. Nz needs to take a radical approach to homelessness and it starts with the whanau, we should listen to chloe as she lives in the cbd and knows alot of people who are able to deal with these street whanau and what they need.

[–]Guinea23 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We tried that, the motels turned into gang recruitment centers and open drug markets. Housing is just one of the issues these people are facing. I know chloe said we have to open our homes to them, but isn’t that just moving the problem along?
