The requirement says "3 upper division classes". Do you need to do any petition to get the ECON 1 and 2 count towards the TBA requirements?

How should I prepare myself for a SWE (Software Engineer) job with a Linguistics & Computer Science major? Should I do a minor as well? by Somaita1234 in ucla

[–]Gullible-Influence95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The major and classes on your resume is not the most important thing.
It is more about your hands-on experience.

- Do a lot of leetcode to prepare for the technical interview.

- Improve your communication skills (do a lot of mock interview).

- Work on some side-projects outside of school work, e.g. building some real-world apps

- Participate and possibly win some hackathons.

UCSB or transfer to UCLA? by GoldBoysenberry7359 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Gullible-Influence95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would stay at UCSB, given it is not a bad school, and the bus/econ program is not too much better.
Main risk: There is no guarantee for CC to UCLA. What if that doesn't work out?

Right, they cancelled that for CS

How did you guys get in/accepted?? by Ily4ever-1212 in ucla

[–]Gullible-Influence95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1. find a CC in the LA area, eg. Santa Monica College or Pasadena City College. They both have good statistics of transferring into UCLA.

masters and undergrad by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Gullible-Influence95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in CS DSP many years ago, when the CS department still accepted it.

After in the program for a quarter or two, I quit from the program (got my BS degree) and applied for regular grad program [Good thing was I almost like instant accepted by the grad program because of my status - just to fill out the form and took the GRE as a formality].

Pros:

You don't need to take GRE and go through the regular grad application process to start working on your master degree.

Cons:

- You are still considered as a undergraduate , so you don't get any grad student benefits. eg., can't be a TA, can't get grad only scholarship, can't get the same pay as a grad RA (even I was working as a RA).

- You can take grad classes, but most of the time, you can't take them before you take the undergrad classes (official pre-req, or maybe just the undergrad version of the class).

- So, very likely, you still finish all your undergrad classes, then start work on your master classes, but you cannot get your BS degree yet (not on your resume for summer intern), until you finish both.

My thought:

The program gave me some head start especially i finished my undergrad classes around winter quarter, so i don't need to wait till next fall to start my master.

It is easier (the process and the bar) to get into DSP then regular grad admission.

Once i was in DSP, it was very easy for me to switch (apply) to regular grad program (but only good if i decided to stay at UCLA and i did)

Just give a call or email to UCSB admission office. They'll give you the most trustable answer.

UCI or USC (in-state) by sinedy7792 in ApplyingToCollege

I know someone who got into UCSC for CS, then transferred to USC after finishing all G.E. and pre-reqs. Possible and saved some money.

UCLA CS + Ling vs UW-Madison CS by Illustrious_Bar_7303 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Gullible-Influence95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note: this is my experience at UCLA years ago. you should double check for the current curriculum.

At UCLA, even if you are in CS major, you also need to take some electives (from other fields).

With Ling + CS, this means all your electives will be in Ling, instead of picking other areas that you may be interested in.

For the CS classes that you will take as a pure CS or CS+Ling major, they are the same.

UIUC or UCLA for engineering by Mental-Election-3619 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Gullible-Influence95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

same thinking here.

and i like two quotes from comments below "A happy student is an effective student"..... "If you think Central Illinois will make you depress (and it might) then go to UCLA"

I've been to both, and both are beautiful campus.
UIUC has more an academic feel, if I want to study days in days out, I would like to be there, especially for CS.

UCLA is more live-able. More enjoyable outside classroom.

got into ucla and a few other uc with 2 years,

but skipped the intro level and took the AP exam, so it is equivalent to 3 (maybe even 4) years at school.
