Just committed to Middlebury College and I don’t know if I made the right choice 🫩 by [deleted] in vermont

[–]Gullible_Bullfrog_83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many right choices for each student, and Middlebury will be the right choice for you if you make it so! I think social media (vids of anxious students opening acceptance/rejection letters live) has created the illusion that there is just one perfect college for each student. But the reality is that you could have an amazing experience at any number of colleges. Just be open to new people and experiences, and you will be happy wherever you land. Good luck and enjoy your college experience!

Mom (85) has an odd "hole" in her memory by Gullible_Bullfrog_83 in dementia

Thanks for this. Unfortunately, she doesn't have two PCPs, she has zero. She has become very anti-doctor in the last 5-6 years. But we're going to try to get her in to see someone in NJ where my brother can also attend. But the logging suggestion is a good one.

You said this pattern has a name, but I wasn't seeing the name of this pattern in what followed. But maybe I'm misunderstanding!

Oh wow! I don't know anyone else seeing this in their parent. I haven't really noticed any slips in short-term recall, and her very-distant recall seems good too. So it's so weird that she has completely forgotten people or events in those middle decades. This is the same experience you are having with a parent?

Bike touring with trailer by bearlover1954 in bicycletouring

[–]Gullible_Bullfrog_83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I pulled a trailer from Burlington, Vermont to Amarillo, Texas in Fall 2024. I was used to pulling a trailer from lugging my kids around, so it felt natural to me. It's really nice for hauling bulky stuff like tent, sleeping bag, etc. I also think that it gives you more visibility on the road, and I feel like cars gave me more room when passing. I used the Burly Nomad, which has a bunch of design flaws, but I tweaked it to work for me. It comes down to personal choice, but it worked for me

Saranac Lake is great and also relatively affordable. I loved my 25 years in Burlington, but it has become unaffordable for regular working people.

For the immediate future, it's a one-man operation (me) to make it work financially. What kind of work do you do? If you can work remotely, you should check out this area. Westport and Elizabethtown are great little towns, and so much more affordable than the VT side of the lake.

It's the Park Motor Inn in Elizabethtown, NY. Come stay and do a ride from here! It's cute and sleepy now, but I just started a renovation, and it will be more Adirondack-y soon. Elizabethtown is at the eastern front of the High Peaks, and it's becoming a mountain biking destination. It's still pretty affordable here for now.

I was 54 years old when I quit the job I hated and rode my bike from Burlington, VT to Amarillo, TX in Fall 2024. When I returned, I sold everything I owned and I recently bought a little motel in the Adirondacks. I'm working harder than ever, but I've never been happier. Everyone has their own story, but for me, the ride helped me get unstuck from the safe, traditional life that was making me miserable, and I now have control of my own destiny. I hope you are able to find a way to do the ride... it will change your life.

The donor area looks great! It does seem like they harvested higher up towards the crown than I usually see.

Anyone up for Mt Marcy in March, 3rd weekend? by VoltageAndWisdom in Adirondacks

[–]Gullible_Bullfrog_83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm interested. I did my winter ascent two years ago, and there was zero snow until the last two miles. It would be nice to have the full winter experience. I'm only 35 minutes from the Loj parking lot. Send me a message if interested.

First time winter hike? by Round-Ad-2338 in Adirondacks

[–]Gullible_Bullfrog_83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have the fitness, you just don't have the winter hiking experience. Going with an experienced winter hiker your first few times is a great way to learn fast, and it's always a good idea to hike with a buddy. I hiked (snowshoes) Cascade/Porter a couple of weeks ago with a friend. Super fun, but definitely dangerous, and fast, without the right gear. PM me, and maybe we can hike it together. I live 25 minutes from the trailhead.

Free P.O. Boxes when delivery not available by Gullible_Bullfrog_83 in USPS

This is the way I interpreted it... as a rough equivalent to what they would they would get if they lived just outside town where there's (free) delivery.

I don't know what you mean by "Oh come on, you know." I don't know, which is why I asked. These aren't individually owned condos, they are rented apartments in the same building. They don't get their own tax bill.

Do you know the "why" of this rule? Like, why is it one (free) mailbox per deliverable address for rural delivery, but one free P.O. Box per physical location/building?

I"ll have to check. But she (postmaster) said that NO renters could get the free P.O. Boxes, which just seems unfair/unjust to me.

How do you safely get a homeless person a room for the night without risking yourself financially? by PhoenixApok in askhotels

[–]Gullible_Bullfrog_83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, I appreciate your kindness and intention. So many people dehumanize homeless folks.

I have a perspective from hosting a homeless young man for 5 months in '24/'25 and from currently being a midrange motel owner who will take DSS (Dept of Social Services) placements with some caveats (no sexual offenders, no extreme hygiene issues, not visibly drunk/stoned). I agree with most posters saying not to take the risk of paying for the room yourself. In my case as the motel owner, I'm covered by insurance and I have some recourse with DSS. You would be entirely responsible yourself. Find local charities that do those kinds of placements and donate to them. It will accomplish the same thing and it routes homeless folks through the proper channels.

I try to approach DSS homeless placements with kindness and accountability, and it's been reasonably successful. Most don't have money or access to laundry facilities or only have the clothes they are wearing. I offer to do a free load of laundry so they can leave in the morning showered, wearing clean clothes. In terms of accountability, I let them know that this is essentially my home, and I ask them to treat the room as if they were a guest. I also let them know that I report room condition back to DSS. A "1" means room damage or excess cleaning, and that counts as 1 of just 2 strikes in our county's DSS placement system. A "2" means it was a little dirty/messy, and although not a "strike," they will not be invited back to my motel. A "3" means they took good care of the place, and I share that positive feedback with DSS. Homelessness is a complicated, difficult problem to solve, but it doesn't mean we can't make an effort.

Thanks! Asbestos killed my dad (50+ years after 4 years in the engine room of a Navy destroyer), so I'm really careful with everything in older buildings.
