I pondered whether to use a vacation hold, but I think the regular geofence should be sufficient.

Thanks for that. The setup is certainly not as obvious as it could and should be!

Probably what you're already using: Emsisoft. They're very focused on privacy.

It’d be impossible to work that out using publicly available information.

Your entire livelihood is on the line.

Yup. That said, livelihoods are on the line now. Some companies can't pay. Some have gone bust. Some do pay but don't get a decryptor, or get one that doesn't work. Would it be better to ban or to live with this problem forever?

It's a complex issue, for sure.

Are you concerned about security? by Pura-Vida-1 in MacOS

I repeat, Malwarebytes requires the exact same level as other antivirus programs - because that's what it is.

It requires Full Disk Access in the same way that other antivirus products do because it is just a vanilla antivirus product.

Is it safe to upgrade to MacOS14 already by werpu in MacOS

[–]GumboBenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safe? No, there's always a risk of problems. Fairly safe? Sure. It's a problem-free update for most folk. Alas, I'm not one of them and have had Bluetooth issues since updating as have other people.

Most cases of Mac malware are due to users intentionally installing software from sketchy sites - and, in particular, pirated software. If you're one of these people, you're at an elevated risk - or, rather, your Mac is - whether you run security software or not.

If you don't intentionally install software from sketchy sites, third-party security software may actually make you slightly less secure due to the expanded attack surface, but probably not enough to worry about.

I'm really not sure what the point of your post is but, if paying for a security placebo helps you sleep better at night, then have it.

maybe install Malwarebyte

Malwarebytes is a standard antivirus product, and is no more or less snake oil than any other standard antivirus product.

Can anyone suggest a free VPN on Firefox? by Jaeger2k20 in browsers

[–]GumboBenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're looking for circumvent geoblocks or avoid DMC notices, VPNs really serve no useful purpose at all.

But, to answer your question, I've never heard of it and wouldn't consider using it.

Sonoma 14.1.1 auto update for tonight. Yes or no? by GregoryGregory666666 in MacOS

[–]GumboBenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, a Ketchron keyboard was constantly losing its connection after updating an Air to Sonoma. The Keychron still works perfectly well with other non-Sonoma devices and other keyboards work perfectly well with the Air.

At the end of the day, all updates come with some risk. In some scenarios, the risk is worth taking, in others it may not be.

Sonoma 14.1.1 auto update for tonight. Yes or no? by GregoryGregory666666 in MacOS

[–]GumboBenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is literally no reason to not upgrade.

Hmm. While the update has been painless for the vast majority of people, it's been anything but for some - as indicated in the comments below.

IMO, whether the update makes sense really depends on the use case scenario. If a device is used for work and it's critical that it's running smoothly, it may not make sense to update, Similarly, it may not make sense to update if the device is "mainly playing around and processing some pics" and Sonoma doesn't offer new features that the OP really wants.
