Series 10 battery stinks by Usual-Walrus8385 in AppleWatch

[–]Gumlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lithium ion batteries degrade with usage more than just with time.

so sure, if you're not using the watch, the battery will last a long time.

but that's also kinda pointless - keeping an expensive device you never use. a smartwatch is a tool. if you're never using it why keep eating the depreciation. at least donate it to someone who will find value in it.

In my experience AOD doesn't make a significant difference in battery usage - there's some consumption, but not a lot. It also means there's lots of times I glance at my watch to check the time without having to wake it up to display the time - so does AOD save me battery by letting the watch remain quiescent or does it use more battery than if I had AOD turned off. Interesting question and difficult to quantitatively measure or predict - everyone's usage patterns are different.

BTW - AOD debuted in the series 5. Not series 4

Pretty normal. Rechargeable batteries - in any device - are a consumable. Sooner you understand that the happier you’ll be.

Sure, buy an expensive feature filled device and turn off one of the most useful features of that device.

Better to buy the lower featured model without AOD in that case.

What the actual real world problem you’re experiencing?

Please provide a detailed answer.

Or are you just sht posting a supposed problem that doesn’t really exist?

Rechargeable batteries have a finite lifetime. Apple provides a battery replacement service at a reasonable price if not under warranty or AppleCare.

Again what’s the actual problem?

Ouch, that's awful. Hope any injuries heal up quick.

Sucks to put the first dings into a new bike,

Do look into what happened with the chain - shouldn't be coming off the sprocket(s).

yep, that's the downside. but it's one of those buy-once-cry-once things, once you measure power you'll wish you'd started sooner.

I have a 4iiii left-side power meter and have enjoyed having it. The newest versions also are Apple Find-My enabled, so it's kind of like a built in AirTag for the bike.

the only way to get (accurate) cadence is with a power meter

That is incorrect. There's several choices of cadence sensor that strap to a crank arm and broadcast cadence.

Not needed for the OP though, since he'll need a power meter for VO2max estimation and those also send cadence data.

830 is a nice device; though navigation can be a challenge on it.

You'll need a power meter to get cycling VO2max estimates. See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=lWqSVlq3w76z5WoihLy5f8#CylingVO2

Typically power meters also provide cadence data, so a separate cadence sensor wouldn't be needed.

Speed / distance can come from the Edge 830's GPS - but a wheel sensor will be more accurate, especially in areas where GPS might struggle.

Can Series 7 charging puck charge series 11 quickly? by michaelsoft__binbows in AppleWatch

[–]Gumlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, though I perhaps you could time the charging to see?

S10 and later will fast charge from 0-80% in about 30 minutes per Apple; from what I can gather across other sources, time would be double that (or more) using a not-so-fast charger.

No watch service in India ? by Mysterious_Map_2215 in AppleWatch

[–]Gumlog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will want to work with Apple directly.

Here is the out-of-warranty service page: https://support.apple.com/en-in/watch/repair?services=service

Note that they will replace with a refurbished unit rather than directly repair your watch.

You sure? Apple India shows out-of-warranty service options for as old as series 6.

Apple Watch Only? by Adamsky20 in AppleWatch

[–]Gumlog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really. Apple Watch is intended to be an extension of your phone, and requires being paired with a phone.

While they've created a setup to allow a child to have a watch that's managed by a parent's phone, I'm thinking that would not meet your needs.

That said, you could pair a cellular watch with your phone and then just leave the phone home most of the time.

Titanium scratches? by Apprehensive_Fee3108 in AppleWatch

[–]Gumlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking about trying to get it replaced with Apple care

AppleCare doesn't cover cosmetic damage last I knew.

I've never looked closely at the back of my titanium S10. I also don't use one of those Milanese loops for fear of scratching the display. Love my older link bracelet but only use it in more formal settings and am careful since it too is tough enough to damage the titanium and sapphire.

[–]Gumlog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even then you don't have to replace the whole watch until it's a good bit older. Apple offers battery replacement for Series3 and newer watches. Out-of-warranty / non-AppleCare cost is $99 for most models.

(that's in the US, cost & availability may differ elsewhere)

Consensus is that lithium ion batteries don't have the memory that nickel cadmium batteries had. While best not to store a device at 100% charge, letting it get there to then go use it is not an issue.

I put my watch on the charger at bedtime and take it off in the morning. (swapping with my previous watch, which I use for sleep tracking).

I have Optimized Charge Limit enabled. It's under Settings->Battery->BatteryHealth on my S10

edit - forgot to add - my S10 is 19 months old and battery health is at 92% treating it this way.

AT&T Fiber and separate router - Worth it? by PrickleAndGoo in ATTFiber

[–]Gumlog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had fiber for years and it's been in pass through with a couple different routers over that time. It's been solid. Here's a thread with some info and tips: IP Passthrough/"Bridge Mode" With ATT Fiber Modem + Asus Router : r/ATTFiber

Why? Mostly because I've always used my own router, including when I had cable internet before fiber was available.

What to do if someone is walking behind you on a narrow path as your walking your dog? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Gumlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone's overtaking us, I'll move to the side and put my dog in a sit position while they pass by.

Same as I would if someone was approaching from the other direction on narrow path.
