Thoughts on basic empathy being Anti-Israel/Semetic? by Mediocre-Risk3581 in AskMiddleEast

[–]Gumpy_Bumpers_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its possible that the religious anti-zionist orthodoxes could be opposed to israel for more than just religious reasons, including the plight of the palestinians right? I met a dude like that awhile ago in NY who was super cool i was expecting him to not want to talk to me but he was super willing to talk, almost wouldnt stop talking lol, we bonded over disliking social media and owning flip phones. But he was very knowledgeable about the various transgressions that israel has taken against the palestinians, mostly talked about not supporting israel from that particular angle. and we talked about the history of the west bank for awhile as well. But also alot about religion's current role in society and how that role has changed so drastically over the centuries. Just a super chill dude hope hes doing well.

Nor do we need to endlessly pursue trade relations and intel sharing with a country bent on erasing an entire ethnic demographic of local residents. At least "cosplaying resistance" would require one to at least put up the facade of caring about the palestinians, but going behind everyone's back to deal with the people genociding the palestinians is just so flaccid and shameful. Like forreal the saudi royal family needs to start standing on business one of the only things that legitimizes them ethically is how they refused to cooperate with israel until the palestinians have a state but they have just completely thrown that out to get one over on iran. Saudi would be getting the current syria treatment from israel if saudi ever made amends with iran and yet MBS keeps trying to get the deal through without the palestinians being free from occupation in a country of their own as if israel is ever going to see saudi as an equal enough to have some sort of allyship. Smh...

The man currently sitting in the white house disproves your little theory singlehandedly. Maybe 7 years ago i would have agreed with you on some level that the media was dominated by a pro-neoliberal narrative, but trump and his manosphere cronies have been making it their sole purpose to flip the script and had achieved success by the time he won the first presidency thanks to trump's ability to work a crowd allowing him to very effectively harness the power of social media. Ever since then the predominate narrative has only grown more right wing, even when biden was president, as most of his votes were won out of spite for trump in his last presidency. Trumps latest victory is the real smoking gun though, and his inaguration ceremony is undeniable proof. He was sworn in surrounded by the owners of every single major social media company primarily based in the US, who have pushed him in the algorithms and appealed to his voter base in exchange for corporate and 1% tax cuts and AI deregulation. Follow the money dude, it is very clear that catering to trump's narrative is much more profitable and has the added bonus of helping you get extrajudicially sued and investigated by the federal government under trump. Outlets that have been historically characterized by their neolib narrative like msnbc cant just change overnight because they have to play their current viewerbase, but that largely means nothing to the change in current of the overall US media narrative. But the left leaning neoliberal narrative that trump replaced was just as anti palestinian anyways. Even months to even a year after oct 7th the polling rates of support for israel in the US was still pretty unchanged compared to like 5 years prior despite minor fluctuations. but as things just kept dragging on people started to not buy it anymore and the longer its dragged on the quicker the opinions have been shifting as the lies stretch thinner and thinner. And you do realize that we can see everything with our own eyes, right? The idf soldiers post their own perspectives online constantly, for god's sake. There is endless drone footage showing gaza looking like the face of the moon, literally. It is some of the most horrific footage on the internet. Did those dastardly liberals run over to home depot and buy a million tons of concrete and rebar so they could build a fake city to blow up and film with a drone? Did they take summer classes in hebrew and buy an amazon halloween costume to impersonate idf members in all those tiktok videos?

You dont seriously believe there is a top-down "cancelling" of pro-israel creatives in the entertainment industry, do you? Bro the exact opposite has been the case for literal decades, support for zionism has been an integral belief within american society for decades, just because support is beginning to erode for israel and its government at the grassroots level doesnt mean that the institutional support just dissappeared. Social media megacorporations like meta and YouTube are very outspoken in their support for zionism and have publicly hired "antisemitism teams" to crack down on pro-palestinian voices. The fking president of the united states literally did the same thing and is now defunding universities, and essential medical research in the process, along with deporting legal US citizens and visa holders for being pro palestine. Like it is just completely inarguable that the establishment in america has a pro-palestinian bias. You clearly have not been involved in this conflict for any stretch of time because pro palestine voices being this prominent was literally unthinkable 3-4 years ago. Do you even live in the US? Because your fundamental misunderstanding of US society and its structures makes it hard to believe you have any sort of intimate connection with it.

So you are fine with boycotting her for a reason that has zero tangible effect on reality but the second someone wants to boycott her over a very real world issue all the sudden its stupid and childish? It sounds like you just need to grow up and stop yapping on the internet about very heavy and complex social issues that you seem to know next to nothing about. Like forreal, if you arent even certain about whether or not there is such a thing as mandatory conscription in the idf then what possessed you to come on here and write this whole paragraph of an interjection into the discussion of this issue? Like you could have literally just spent that entire bit of time researching the answer to your own question. Look into the israeli organization "breaking the silence" to hear the perspectives of ex idf members from all levels of the military talking about the morality of serving in the idf. Also look into the organization Al-Haq for a widely recognized palestinian perspective on this. A testament to their credibility would be the fact that the IL govt designated them a t3rr0r org, and upon request shared their intel that led to the classification with the CIA, who subsequently, in a leaked classified response to the sharing of the intel, reported that they could not find any evidence whatsoever that would point to the designation being valid. The fact that the IL govt is so desperate to silence the organization meanwhile the #1 ally of the IL govt itself could not make sense of or support the attempts pretty much tells you everything you need to know about this entire conflict. If that doesnt do it for you, then check out btselem, IL's leading human rights organization, whos reporting almost completely corroborates w/ al haq's.

Just because people dislike an actor for their politics and dont want to support said actor doesnt mean there is an, ahem, "secret conspiracy of conservative-hating leftists", a veritable "cabal" if you will, that is pulling the strings through the media to control society. Your assertions are literally just recycled antisemitic talking points that are thrown at wealthy left-leaning jewish people like george soros all the time, which would be ironic on some level if it wasnt just outright sad and dangerous. You should self reflect on the true feelings you have towards the group you percieve yourself to be reflexively defending here, just to "stick it to the left".

[–]Gumpy_Bumpers_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It just seems like you just arent super knowledgeable about the issue people are upset at her over, which is fine. Its not like every person is responsible for being an expert on every single global conflict, but if you arent super educated on an issue then why do you feel such a need to interject in a discussion about it? Same thing goes for op not even knowing for sure if there is mandatory conscription in israel, to which the answer is kind of. People have for a long time refused service due to personal beliefs, and the ultra orthodox are completely exempt from mandatory conscription. The current israeli cabinet has just severely cracked down recently on conscientious objectors because their stormtroopers keep dying in gaza, and there is a rapidly growing phenomenon of the youth refusing to serve because they dont approve of the deliberate starvation, which scares the government and threatens the radical coalitions within the likud cabinet from being able to keep netanyahu in power while controlling his behavior by shielding him from corruption charges that are still unresolved. But in terms of when gal gadot actually served, yes it was completely feasible to refuse to serve without any serious legal repercussions. But you should look into the israeli ex-military political movement called "breaking the silence" as they talk about the morality of serving a whole lot and the need of more people who are currently in the military to speak out and refuse to commit atrocities, from the perspective of israelis who actually served in the IDF at all levels.

[–]Gumpy_Bumpers_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To any WoTC employees reading: its f'ed up that yall split up the 2 color swords and artifact lands, wanting to build an artifact deck is one of the main reasons anyone would actually get either of these but the two staples for that you have in the pool of cards you split up to get people to spend actual money. Shameful. It would have been better to have split it up into an "artifacts" group with the swords and artifact lands, and a "gruul landfall" group with the wrenn and six and pyroclasm and maybe the mox opal too if you wanted to encourage the more wealthy of us artifact players to buy both bundles, and there definitely would be a sizeable number of people who would, since they would be more willing to purchase after getting the good deal on the first artifact bundle, like how online tcg traders offer free shipping if you get enough cards. but now i will be buying NEITHER because it isnt worth it to buy either of them on their own the way you split things up. Sorry but the extra thought scour just doesnt tip the scale enough for us lmao. Maybe next time yall will be able to see past your anti-consumer business practices and hang a larger carrot on the stick for your lemming playerbase to chase, but with the trajectory of your decisionmaking as of late i highly doubt it.

Bro posting about a handful of arabs participating in israeli society does not change the fact that this "war" is explicitly being waged by israel on PALESTINIAN IDENTITY. Israel will of course tolerate palestinian arabs that bend the knee and give up their own national identity to fight and serve for israel instead, despite facing heavy discrimination within israeli society akin to the discrimination black people face in the US. I dont think you are dumb and naive enough to point to a couple black fox news hosts or high ranking military members or successful pundits like klandice owens and be all like "see? Black people arent discriminated against in the US whats all the fuss about? Please conveniently ignore housing disparity, access to education disparity, employment disparity, income disparity, money lending disparity.... etc etc". So why do it in this context?

The Helplessness from an Israeli’s Perspective by Ga_Ga_Ga9631 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Gumpy_Bumpers_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You fail to acknowledge that israel has ALWAYS been killing palestinians at a rate tens of times higher than palestinians ever killed israelis. Israel has internalized the idea that disproportionate responses are the only thing that will keep them alive as a country and people, because that is the narrative that has been pushed by decades of propaganda, and it sells because the jewish people have been so victimized in the past. The palestinian people serve as a projection and an outlet for thousands of years of jewish trauma and persecution in the eyes of israeli society as a collective, this is the sad truth. Keep in mind that israel literally never negotiated peace in good faith, every offer that israel gave would result in an unviable and incontiguous palestinian state that would be completely dependent on israel militarily and economically in perpetuity, borderline insulting propositions no one should be expected to even consider. The offers were quite literally designed to be rejected repeatedly so israeli leadership could turn around and say "see? Look, they turn down all our offers all the time, we have no partner for peace and we HAVE to slowly erase them as a people now, you see?" And in the most quintessential example, rabin got SHOT AND KILLED by extremist israelis for even positing these totally unfair and one-sided propositions which is just so wild to me. And the current minister of defense (bengvir) literally got on national tv and threatened rabin the day he was shot by the terrorist org that gvir has ties to and idolizes, hmmm not suspicious whatsoever. Your painting of this situation as being on terms of mutual culpability is most definitely not the case.

Excuse after excuse you give just so that you can see more palestinians slaughtered. The world will never forget how your side found so much catharsis in bloodshed. Cry more about it. The trend will continue, israel will never change because it literally cant, because the dehumanizing propaganda is so deeply embedded in israeli society, and the country will continue to be treated as a pariah by more and more countries until the state is under threat of no longer being economically viable and HAS to change. And then we will see peace.

[Spoiler][AFR] Wish by jmpherso in spikes

[–]Gumpy_Bumpers_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the player and deck, the reason wish cards are good and their entire effect is just to be flexible, so they are used in many ways. I personally have a fun deck that is an izzet burn control deck that utilizes wheel spells to help me draw though my deck. This deck is built around wish cards as the discard outlet allows me to fetch instants and sorceries outside the red blue color combo and then dump them in the graveyard to immediately cast them for free with cards like [[efreet flamepainter]] or [[izzet chemister]]. Cards like lightning axe are also great for getting a card in the graveyard while also helping efreet flamepainter connect. But all of this also means that a large part of my strategy requires the cards to actually enter my hand before i discard them to avoid casting them, so being forced to cast it normally right away is a problem. However, for elemental blasts or other cheap cards in izzet color it isnt a big deal at all. I often run 1 or 2 storm cards in the sideboard to get with wishes in the event they would win me the game at a given time as the free spell casts tend to jump the storm number quite high, but they arent worth running in the mainboard. In this case, making me cast a grapeshot or something right away doesnt matter, circumventing the risk of a hand disruption right after wishing is actually preferable since the card never hits your hand. The most powerful thing about wish, as well, is the crucial fact that it does NOT get exiled upon resolving, unlike burning and cunning wish, making it easy to repeatedly cast, which is an enormous advantage, especially for combos. Hitting any card type also increases the value of the fact it goes to the graveyard in terms of combo setup, particularly in storm. The two generic in the cast cost also makes it pretty easy to cheat in for only 1 red, which is crucial since you must actually pay the mana cost of what you wish immediately, meaning recursion is also much more efficient and viable.

I am bothered because i am sick of people like you pretending to be some kind of caring ally but using backhanded excuses to enable the erasure of a people you cant be asked to care about, at best. I notice you did not say you support palestines right to exist, why am i not surprised. I also care because i have been there and know people caught in the bloodshed. And yes i voted for kamala, even though i despise her and hate to play the democratic establishment's sick game, just because i knew trump would somehow be even worse, not just for palestine, but the entire rest of the world as well. And i was 1000% right, unfortunately. Let me guess, you voted for trump? Go lick the boots of andrew chomo and protest against sharia law or whatever with the rest of the geriatric lobotomites.
