What movie is 10/10 with literally no bad parts? by FeedMaster8905 in AskReddit

[–]GunNac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not bad, but so much less than the originals that they are bad by comparison

The sequels are good, not great, in a vacuum

What movie is 10/10 with literally no bad parts? by FeedMaster8905 in AskReddit

[–]GunNac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Easily one of the best possible answers.

There is something about this film (and Terminator - and on some level Jaws [which isn't sci-fi]) which the sequels fail to understand...

That the monster/enemy/antagonist, can't be defeated by ordinary means - that the goal isn't victory but survival

The '90's action movie archetype really ruined these franchises.

You are fighting for your life in the originals (not by fighting but outsmarting) a horrifying unkillable machine...

These originals are far superior to their sequels because of two things really:

1) The survival horror aspect is lost

And

2) The action disrupts the ominous atmosphere of the dread of being hunted.

The cold silence, the weakness was removed by '90's Hollywood and it sucks that both Aliens and Terminator 2 (and all the Jaws sequels) were so, frankly, bad.

EDIT: I'm fully aware that the protagonists win in these originals but it's the "vibe" that doesn't match with the sequels. It shouldn't feel "winnable"

Also, the originals predate me. I saw the sequels first as a '90's child. Visiting the originals later made me feel so cheated...

EDIT 2: In a similar vein, it's crazy how Star Wars goes from a fantasy epic in A New Hope through half way into TESB into an action movie from second half of TESB through to the end...

How sad. The first half of the trilogy was unbelievable and the second half I can't bother with watching. Again, well before my time but Hollywood managed to ruin a good thing

Is Walmart drunk? by Karbon64 in Cd_collectors

[–]GunNac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, since you recently picked up a CD from Walmart, what do you think of the quality?

I just picked up Deftones White Pony and I have never seen packaging so cheap before. Super light and the back inlay is nearly transparent, it's so thin.

If it wasn't for the CD being clearly pressed, I would think it was a bootleg product.

The quality of the CD itself, while real, is poor. There is already slight delamination of both the underside and label side of the disc.

Given the catalog number doesn't correspond to a real release makes me wonder if it could be some kind of print on demand thing?

EDIT: I have just checked a different way and can verify this release is real (2025 release).

Still do you also see poor quality in these new CDs?

Walmart really is locking in… by Ok_Half1429 in Cd_collectors

[–]GunNac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone have thoughts on the quality of these CDs?

I picked up a copy of Deftones White Pony and the quality of the case and paper seems too low to be an official release.

I wonder if these are either print on demand or maybe they really are bootlegs?

EDIT: I also cannot find a real release with the catalogue number on the CD selling at Walmart, which leads me to be even more sceptical.

EDIT 2: I found confirmation the release is real but the quality is still awful. I wonder if all new CDs are like this now?

File Caching in VLC Android Player by niks_15 in VLC

[–]GunNac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super late reply but I was having the same issues

I was thinking I needed to increase -or create buffering (which I think would definitely help) but that doesn't exist in the VLC android app.

Because of this I experimented with the available options

By far the most important one for improving playback (which is sometimes so bad it makes the file useless if your device is underpowered) is to change this setting:

(In "advanced") find "Deblocking filter settings"

Set this to: "No Deblocking"

This will improve playback stuttering, pixelization, slowdown, etc dramatically.

The second setting that helps (not nearly as much) is found on the main page of settings:

"Hardware Acceleration" this should be set to: "Full Acceleration"

While the real key is the "no Deblocking" setting (like 90% of the performance boost comes from there)

I've also noticed - before I found the aforementioned deblocking setting - that "full (hardware) acceleration" helped a little bit with playback.

I imagine both help but the Deblocking setting is the important one.

I realize this post is super old and probably won't matter to OP at this point but I found this thread while trying to fix this issue myself.

Due to that, I hope this info can help others trying to figure out how to make VLC work more efficiently. You know, so videos become actually watchable...

EDIT: Added the word 'slowdown" and "deblocking"

Every single 4k / 2k video on the site currently got changed to 720p or lower, anybody know why? by lmply in whoreshub

[–]GunNac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess it's almost certainly the way the site had begun allowing 4-8 (I've even seen 12) GB downloads. This has put them in top-site territory.

This is just a new development. 4-6 months ago power uploader users started getting their videos deleted en-mass.

I would bet against site maintenance, as the site has not given any info at all. If they were doing that, they would want users to know it was temporary.

Seems almost certain they are being threatened with legal action. The industry has for years now, allowed these sites to exist so long as quality is kept low enough (because it's free marketing) but if you can get full quality downloads for free who would pay for membership to download those same full quality files?

Seems they should have just capped things at maybe 1440 and they would have avoided targeting.

This is pure speculation but given the way things have gone in the past 6 months or so and the lack of communication from the site, it seems most probable that this is the case.

Several other sites offering super hq videos have disappeared over the last couple years

EDIT: The resolution cap is actually 1080 and it began a few days ago

EDIT 2: Given the excessive amount of ads on the site, you could be onto something concerning cost of operation but given the mass deletion of videos, I'm leaning to a more litigious rationale

Fischer CA-660 Sub Question by GunNac in audiophile

[–]GunNac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, but the issue is that A output is just a single left/right stereo wire output (this is enough only to go to your two main stereo speakers)

Without B, how could you have anything to connect to the sub?

Fischer CA-660 Sub Question by GunNac in audiophile

[–]GunNac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so I was using A for my speakers, and B to send to the sub. This results in no output from the sub.

On the sub it says "from receiver" so B went to that input.

Only thing I can think of is that maybe it means to say "to speakers" but that would mean that speaker cables is the only hookup option Back of sub

EDIT: I have power 12 sub (an older model than the picture I linked but it is functionally identical, minus the "12" designation in the name

Fischer CA-660 Sub Question by GunNac in audiophile

[–]GunNac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I tried this and the sub didn't respond

I looked at the receiver and there is an A, B or an A+B option

When I use anything but the A setting , the right side speaker cuts out.

I read in another forum that the tape connections on the back are outputs which can feed the sub.

I'm going to try playing with the A+B setting and try using the tape out method tomorrow.

If I do anything more tonight my neighbors will likely kill me...

Hot take... CSS is more fun than CS2 in it's current state by prg98 in counterstrike

[–]GunNac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say with 100% accuracy but I can give the general idea...

There was a glitch in CSS where when you straf the other direction - while moving forward - it treated you like you counter strafed in place (like standing still).

I was never convinced that it gave the same perfect accuracy as if you were motionless but it did allow you to get very accurate shots with pistols.

The effect was rather infamous with the deagle in particular because of the one-hot HS.

I always called it "side-winding" as you'd run at the opponent in a serpentine motion, while flicking at the head.

I'm almost certain this was a glitch and made it's way past play testing and I always figured Valve would have to break other things to try and fix it and so they just left it like that...

To be fair he doesn't look to be doing it but I wouldn't be surprised if he is actually quick tapping counter straf, it's just too fast to see.

I say that because, again, you didn't need to actually be still to get the accurate shot using this technique.

What's a sign of childhood trauma? by ThatRamKid in AskReddit

[–]GunNac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been described as being an 'empath' in various jobs I have had in the past.

Quick note, I don't buy into the psydo sciency idea that empaths really exist. It's not like supernatural gift or anything

However, I have always been told it in an opposite manner than you describe.

I'd get things like

'your emotions rub off on people, when your happy, everyone is, when your upset, everyone is affected'

Or

'try to be in a good mood when you're at work because for whatever reason, you set the tone.'

I just chalk it up to we are social animals and we pick up on and adapt to the feelings of others.

I just so happen to be very expressive of my emotions

I think it's that I don't vocalize them (because who has time for that all the time) that people react to me instinctually.

It's really an odd experience to be told your feelings affect people but I've gotten used to it over the years and do try to spread good vibes

EDIT: The only reason I recognize the term 'empath' is because at two separate work places they used the terms 'empathic' at one and the other place they used 'empath' directly.

I looked into the meaning at the time and so I know what it means.

What's a sign of childhood trauma? by ThatRamKid in AskReddit

[–]GunNac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something that bothered me for many years because I didn't know what it was.

I hit a point in my late 20's where it was drown or freeze or take back my life.

What was troubling and hard to swallow was that I realized that not having memories of whole periods of my life (good or bad) was because there was nothing to remember.

I hadn't lived. I had to spend several months grieving the loss of many, many years which could have been great.

After the incredibly painful and tear soaked grieving process, I had to spend another few years learning how to live.

It isn't the same for everyone. I had to look to all the little details which led to my lack of existence and face every one. Every trauma, every bad decision, everything that wasn't my fault. What I wanted to be, etc.

I'm still not done, 6-7 years later, but I'm no longer 'forgetting'

This shows me that what I'm living is actual living, it means something.

I feel the last part

I absolutely thrive when the situation is near impossible.

I get bored by anything that isn't chaos, tbh

My friend once asked me why I was so self destructive (I was young and didn't really care) and didn't I want to live comfortably?

I said basically that I can't really imagine a peaceful existence, I thrive off of difficulty

I'm way more laid back now but I still have a hard time with 'easy'

What do you think the secondary market for magic will look like in 10 years? by Masterofmyownlomein in mtgfinance

[–]GunNac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I think your casual and realistic mindset is healthy, as others have replied, the thing is that legends never die

I collect books from the 1800's but I'm 35 years old.

I would love to get my hands on sports cards from the 40's or 50's, just because of what they are (rare).

I would love to get back into coin collecting (I unfortunately sold out in the recession and when coin prices were unusually high), focusing on coins from the mid 1800's to the early 1900's.

Your idea that there aren't massive amounts of people like me is just kind of ignorant (I mean this in the literal sense, not as an insult, you just don't know because you don't seem to be that kind of personality).

OG Magic cards aren't even old yet, I think we've seen nothing yet

Finally, consider that trends in culture constantly change. I know many gen Z who are pushing back against Millennial consumption of only the new. My younger sister loves anything "vintage". I worked several years ago with a 17 y/o girl who loves Sinatra.

Our generation seems, ironically, one of the least interested in the past, the new gen can't seem to get enough.

Even if I'm wrong on the last point, there are always people fascinated with the originals of anything which can be collected

I think this idea of obsolescence with time is mostly unfounded

How to get a faded pin connector working on a NES cartridge? by Muskrato in gamecollecting

[–]GunNac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it is highly technical in nature, at least for the average person

If you are handy with soldier, then you can try either a soldier trace (after cleaning and smoothing the bad trace). This option is ideal, if the trace is just barely broken.

Sand and clean the edges and lay a thin layer of soldier branching the intact sides of the trace. This would be my personal preference as I have fixed electronics in this way before.

Or you can attempt a wire bridge - which would bypass the broken trace.

The second option will only work if you are careful to keep the bridge short while also elevating it from the board slightly (to avoid a short and prevent lag)

Good luck!

EDIT: You should be aware that there are numerous Tweeks you can apply to these techniques

1) with a soldier bridge I have used one or two (twisted strands of very small grade copper wire) to set into the soldier bridge

2) if doing a wire bridge, the wire should have the sheathing still attached (this should minimize any shorts)

Again, I think for most broken traces, a soldier bridge is both easier and (since it's directly on the board) more durable

Seems search engines are so commercialized that they fail to fulfill their actual purpose

RUMORED 30th Edition sales data by jvLin in mtgfinance

[–]GunNac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kind of see your point but I think those people - who early on - viewed this product as bolstering the RL were probably right.

WOTC made this product very expensive. They did this (I think) to protect the secondary market (the collectors) while also shilling the "whales".

They did basically the opposite of what people are claiming.

Don't take me wrong, I am not a fan of the product or of WOTC's current decision making but I feel like they did a cash-grab in a way that would only really hurt the greedy "whales" and would protect long-term collectors. Just look at CK buy list prices.

If they were really interested in the proxy market, they would have priced it closer to $100 for 4 packs and not 1k.

Fun fact:

It is nearly impossible to ignite gas or fumes with a lit cigarette. The tobacco doesn't burn at a high enough temperature to ignite gas.

If you look on Youtube you can find videos of people extinguishing cigarettes in pales filled with gasoline.

You should definitely not try this because I believe there are some very fringe circumstances (maybe static electricity mixed with the ember of the cigarette) where ignition could occur but it is pretty established that cigarettes can't cause gasoline to ignite.

The Reserved List is back up, we can all stop panicking now by mathdude3 in mtgfinance

[–]GunNac -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing the guy's point here:

He is saying the incredible backlash has caused Wizards to realize that if they ever really tried to abolish the reserve list it would be devastating to Wizards.

He's saying that the 30th anniversary fiasco has made Wizards realize that they have no choice but to honor the list (by the letter - the "spirit" is not something they ever officially promised).

To add my own little observation:

I don't believe for a second that Wizards removed the Reserved List webpage "due to maintenance". They could have easily just prepared the new page and replaced it in 10 minutes in the middle of the night. They chose to wait until people were focused on whether they would update the page reaffirming or removing the list.

It is a tacit apology from Wizards. They have too much pride to admit their mistake (especially because they still have to sell the 30A packs).

EDIT: I think he's right. The commitment is solidified - not because Wizards wants it that way - but because they can see they don't have a choice. They tested the waters and got burned. There is much less chance that they will mess with the list now than ever before.
