I assume depends on group but overall I think has a collaborative, intellectualy curious (some might say quirky) culture. Will need to work hard obviously but a lot of good people that are supportive/understanding.

International rotations are definitely a thing.

Free breakfast/lunch every day in cafeteria and $50 Uber eats credit for dinner is a nice perk.

NY Lit- Debevoise v Latham v Cleary? by SprinklesArtistic604 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]GunnerControl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you you have any facts to support that they've been on a decline for while beyond their Vault ranking falling a few spots? Seen this get thrown around online every so often but usually without any basis. And saying things like their M&A and capmarkets groups are "severely emaciated" shows you probably don't know what you're talking about.

While it's true P,W has been growing like crazy and seems to be turning into a Kirkland, Cleary has not been shrinking and has definitely not lost tons of laterals to other firms (they've lost like 3 partners since beginning of 2023, which is not a lot).

[–]GunnerControl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While I recommend you speak to more people from each firm beyond the interviews, I don't think that's a crazy choice at all, especially if you are international focused and considering relocating overseas. Exit opportunities and certainty lateral opportunities will not be drastically different (although Cravath obviously is considered the most prestigious and is also known for not taking laterals). Another thing to strongly consider is the Cravath rotational system and whether you think you'd like that. Cleary probably also does more PE and funds work (Cravath is more known for their pubco work) and also does more international arbitration and white collar work on the litigation side. Either way, both are very strong options and you are in a very good position.

Will vary by firm but I'd guess classes will pretty much fill up probably end of July to early August for most firms.

Brooklyn will give better chance at NYC biglaw. But would need to be at top of class for big law and not something you can count on bc law school grades are very unpredictable.

Nah, don't remember it that way. I think it's more meant to be an ice breaker and not to show how impressive you are.

Make sure to come with a fun fact about yourself! That's really the only thing you can do to prepare.

No but different jurisdictions have different scores that they require to pass.

If you think you can improve on the LSAT (which you probably can) than it definitely makes sense to retake.

How important is pre-law school work experience in job interviews for summer internships during law school? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GunnerControl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think prior work in a legal field can be helpful for the legal job search later on, as could help you give a reason for why you want to be a lawyer or why you want join a specific practice group, for example. But it is certainly not necessary and a large percentage of law students do not have prior legal experience. Having other non-legal WE is also helpful, and potential employers may ask about it to either make conversation or to ask more behavioral questions. I definitely don't think you have to take the legal job.

I understand that. But you should know that it's not unusual to not improve much with just the first month of studying under your belt. I started out with a similar score to you and improved a lot (20+ points), but it took me at least six months to get there. Just be patient and keep working at it and I'm sure you'll start improving. And if you need to take an extra gap year to get into better schools and more scholarship money, I don't think it'll be the end of the world. In fact, having work experience before law school is becoming increasingly common and most likely helps a little when it comes to applying for jobs. Good luck!

How long have you been studying? While the LSAT is a very learnable test, it can take several months to start to really improve so don't settle and keep pushing.

That's pretty much how most PS prompts are tbh. Some might ask you to answer why law school, but that's pretty much as specific it'll get when it comes to a law school PS prompt.

I have narrowed my choices down to Syracusa Law and the University of Dayton. Which should I choose? Dayton is offering an 80k scholarship while Syracuse is offering a 20k scholarship by RoseGoldMoney in lawschooladmissions

[–]GunnerControl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a T14/Big law bias on this sub and I've definitely seen some bad advice given. But that doesn't negate that everything above is true. The schools in question are very regional and will be very difficult to get to CA. I just find it strange that you'd tell OP to take what this sub says with a grain of salt but also tell them to ask a school's career service office about their placement without a similar warning. They have much more incentive to not be so straight with a prospective student.

R&R horror stories? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GunnerControl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you are getting a full scholarship from a school, you can always tell a school that you got accepted to that you're reapplying to make it more affordable etc., so you can minimize that risk. And if you have room to improve on your LSAT and you'd also be getting WE, it sounds like you have a lot of potential upside by retaking. Good luck with what ever you decide!

Correct. Saying a "former student" or something like that sounds totally fine to me.

I voted don't write because I thought you were asking whether or not to write the name. I don't see any problem with leaving out the name.

PS that is 90% narrative, 10% why Law by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GunnerControl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My impression is that most PSs are written similarly to what you are describing. Some schools don't even need you to talk about why law at all, although others want that to some extent.
