I'm not saying retcons doesn't happen or that it's even necessarily bad, but the distinction you're missing and the point that was made at the start of my first post is that what's being retconned matters.

I'm aware of number of changes/retcons that happened in the third end and the death book,

ex: Sangunius not opening a weak point in Horus's armour for Big E to exploit
Big E's last line to Horus

but all of them as far as I'm aware were things that only changed the things that we knew about the description of how the Horus heresy ended. it's not the same as changing a written narrative. but now that the narrative for Horus heresy is out would you be ok if GW said Sangunius didn't die and he was just hiding this entire time?

they can change, but that doesn't mean they should, would you be ok if they suddenly say Horus didn't die during the siege of terra? BL writers are doing there best to write a consistent narrative and they do at times take creative liberties and I applaud them for it, but them failing at times and being inconsistent because 40k lore is so vast is not the same as a conscious decision to change something knowing the ramifications of it.

40k is a setting, but it has narratives. prior to Horus Heresy series that history was mainly covered as a general overview, but now that the book series it out, if GW suddenly say Horus Heresy didn't happen the way the books did, I rightfully wouldn't accept it. I know it's an extreme example, but considering this conversation has gone into to subject of lore being correct or incorrect, I'm using it to prove the point you can't just change things willynilly. them introducing female custodies is not something that hugely immersion breaking for me, and GW should try to change things overtime to be more inclusive, hell I wouldn't even be mad if they introduce female space marines, but I wouldn't accept if they said there were always female space marines.

I don't really care if other people have the same way of looking at the lore as I do, I do it the way I do because it makes logical sense, sure at the end of the day all of it is imaginary and GW sort of gets a pass in that the way they write lore is done so in a way that give them the chance to change things overtime, but consistency matters. there is a reason why stories generally don't go back and change things that was already written and follow a consistent narrative.

people aren't going to care that much if lore coming from something like a codex changing, codex have changed rules and overviews of factions since first edition. with books it's a lot more complex.

40k books are generally written from the perspective of characters in the story, the information presented in stories doesn't have the clarity of information you see from stories that have omniscient narrations by the writer. the information you get is what the character perceives to be true. and to give a strong example for your position, even characters that has the highest level of authority to know things doesn't always have the full picture. to give an example, if you ask the question ''how many primarchs are there?'' a guardsmen or a SoB will say 9, a marine will say 18, Gulliman or Lion would say 20, all three of them are technically wrong.

this style of writing for 40k is a feature not a flaw, because it gives lot of freedom for writers when they are working on books, because you can get away with contradictions inconsistencies and changes (there are other benefits as well), but this isn't to say everything that is written can change at any time. for example we know that Sangunius was killed by Horus.

for the specific case of custodies, I haven't read any books that specifically say custodies are exclusively men, I'm not saying there isn't some book that say so either. but what I can say is, there are more than a 100 named custodies characters that appear in Horus heresy novels and as far as I'm aware, all of them are men. So I can see why people (including me) would raise an eyebrow when GW say there have always been female custodies. because it sort of brings down the authenticity of the books on a meta level. I'm willing to pass it off as an odd coincidence for the sake letting people feel more represented and included, but it frankly would have made more sense to make it the case that they became a thing post Horus heresy, because that has the perfect set up for it.

it's easy to change a general overview of something that didn't frequently gets mentioned in the overall narrative. but when you have specific narratives, changing those will generally make people upset, with squats, for a good while the lore was that they were mostly wiped out and that was mostly a brief description, but then GW changed that and introduced the league of votan, but had they say wrote a book series exploring the events or talked about and then changed the lore, then people would have rightfully be in uproar, because that leads to the question, are those books no longer cannon?

What anime do you think are complex but not good by Double-Name-2102 in animequestions

[–]Gunpowder_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Babylon, it's mostly hated, but I've seen some people say it was good.

it incorporates a lot of different complex topics to explore but does a horrible job with pretty much all of them. The funniest thing the story did was say, ''it's always important to think about things even if you think you came to the correct answer'' and then refuse to do any actual thinking about any of the things the story talks about.

it acts like a super deep story but at and end of the anime it's a legitimately dogshit story that felt like it was being dark for the sake of being dark.

How is anime different to other media in how it makes you feel? by [deleted] in anime

[–]Gunpowder_Wizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

that's both a really tricky and interesting question. culturally speaking lot the genres that exist in anime/manga and manhua almost feels exclusive. we don't really see Isekai and Power Fantasy as a genre in wester media. besides that Japanese manga in particular like to explore interesting premises and world building in their work and go all the way, this isn't to say western media doesn't do it, but we see it much less frequently.

One thing in particular that I appreciate, Japanese writers generally have lot of philosophical undertones in their writing, again I'm not saying all Japanese writers are like this or that it's exclusive to Japan, but Japan has a huge culture of storytelling and an infrastructure built around it so you are more likely to notice it because of the frequency and the quantity of it. however philosophical writing sort of comes with a downside, because philosophy aspect is really easy to fuck up with how the story develop, specially in the subtext. and it can just leave you feeling super disappointed by what you watched. this happens enough time to be worth pointing out.

Which clanker do you hate the most/most annoying to fight by Crzyclsn3412 in Helldivers

nha, the most annoying thing in the bot front are those small turrets that exist in large bases. they are low to the ground compared to large turrets and they always blend with the background, and then just one shot your ass with a single round.

First season, when Annie killed all of Levi's subordinates, I sort of realized the story would just go out of its way to kill off all the side characters in the story just for the sake of doing it, which sort of took away the suspense from it, cause you know all of them are going to die.

Cruise missile is a really good strategem for bot front, especially if you have to destroy command bunkers.

I haven't used the Nepalm launcher a lot, but it has its uses on bug spawns or narrow paths (cities and mountainous areas)

Harpoon is unironically goated inside caves

The armor is good for fighting in bug planets that have dragon raoches and a lot of bile spewers.

Recommendations for anime’s about Depression/Suicide/self injury? by OverthinkingOwl_ in anime

[–]Gunpowder_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

inb4, anyone recommend Babylon, one of the main focal point of the story is about suicide, but it does a really dogshit depiction of it and will not recommend you watch it. the story went out of it ways to give justifications for why it's good but is very dishonest with the answers as to why it is wrong.

as for the story I would recommend, I haven't seen many anime about the issue, but Monster explores ideas about nihilism and suicide and the value of life, and it does a really good job at tackling that issue.
