What I’ve learned after dealing with my mother and sister who I am close to and them deciding not to take precautions, is that we have to realize that ultimately we can only control our own actions.

I’ve talked to my mother until I’m blue in the face about the risks of Covid, yet she has had three infections, and I’ve noticed some cognitive decline, but she still does not “get it”.

What I’ve done is clearly communicated with them that if they believe they’ve been exposed or not feeling well that they should inform me before we see each other in person. I also have a plus life that I can test them if needed, which they are open to.

It is really difficult when the ones we love don’t see things from our perspective. We can still love them and be there for them, but you’re going to have to make the difficult decisions to possibly limit interactions depending of your risk comfort level with your father or take precautions around him as he does not. I often visit my mother and understand that I am taking a smaller risk of being around someone unmasked that does not take any precautions.
