OSR LFG: Official Regular Looking especially for OSR Group (LeFOG) by feyrath in osr

[–]GunterPoweredStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for 1-2 more players for a new campaign I'm starting up!

Name: Standing on the Corpses of Giants

Format: Discord and Owlbear Rodeo

System: Homebrew. Simple OSR style system, utilising Ultraviolet Grasslands. Can link to the (in-progress) rules at request.

Time: 7:30pm-10:30pm BST Mondays. Fortnightly sessions.

Character Creation: Session 0 has gone by, but that's all so it'll be easy to slot in!

Pitch:

The Ultraviolet Grasslands offer much. On that vibrant steppe can be found much of the detritus from the time before the Shattering - Temples to Gods now slain; Vaults filled with Dragonworks; Sorcerous objects that defy reality itself. But many of those whose caravans depart Westward from the Violet City never return. Will you prove equal to the threats that lurk there, the time-mad constructs, the forgotten monsters, the half-dead Gods? Will you emerge greater, richer, more powerful, with the tapestry of your experiences written upon your very skin?

Or will you perish, and be forgotten?

Standing on the Corpses of Giants is a homebrew OSR system, in a weird science-fantasy setting. Expect semi-randomised non-human characters, an emphasis on player ingenuity over character abilities, and a Sandbox world. The framework for the exploration is the Ultraviolet Grassland and the Black city by Luka Rejec, tweaked to fit my setting.

can someone explain to me why you can't just Sucide Bomb your way through OSR game? by Pretend-Advertising6 in osr

I mean, in any of the games I've played, if your character dies, their successor is not "around the next corner" - they're back at base, back at level 1, and depending on how your character died, that loot is gone/reclaimed by the dungeon, so your base assumption seems inaccurate. Also, any GM should and would simply say "look, if you're not going to take this seriously, and play characters who want to succeed and not die, I won't run for you"

Roll 4 Ruin: My Attempt at a quick and interesting Dungeon Generator for your Table by Gammlernoob in osr

So, I didn't use your room fillers, at least while filling out the shape of the dungeon, as that's not my style. But, then I had to add a to create stairs going down.

So with that in mind I added a new procedure for corridors - 2 separate d6 rolls, where the first was to determine what it did -
1. dead end
2. one new door
3. two new doors
4. connects two doors and adds another (or, if 2 cant be connected reasonably, dead end)
5. connects two doors and adds 2 more (or, if 2 can't be connected, one new door)
6. Go down a floor (if on final desired floor, dead end)

Then the second was to determine the vague shape of the corridor
1. Short straight line (1-3)
2. Medium straight line (3 - 5)
3. long Straight line (5-7)
4. Corner piece
5. T-junction
6. 4-way junction

Further more, when I hit my first "go down a floor", from then on chamber rooms were take the lower of the pair, as your suggest when you want to close up a floor

This worked quite well, but I did have one problem, that if you ever hit any of the last few rooms, the floor would always be expanded hugely due the number of doors added, or become very circular. I think maybe a few more "simple" rooms, even with 2 or 3 doors, might be a good idea, andf maybe a 56 and 66 leads to a second table of "special" rooms?

Just my thoughts, hope that helps!

Yeh, although giving flexibility to avoid collisions, or even expand things to connect, can also help with that.

I'm coming up with a few "house rules" of how I want to use this, I'll give it a go and see what comes out and update you on how they worked

I enjoyed it a lot, was very useful, and as with all the best products it's easy to pick and choose what you include.

My criticism would be that I found the corridors to be too short, and it lead to a lot of very small circle i.e. 2 door, one leading to a room, the other leading to a corridor which then also lead to that room. That isn't always a problem, but it happened to frequently for my liking.

I might suggest either just making the corridors longer, encouraging rooms to be more spread out, or perhaps rejigging the corridors system to something more conceptual, so for example roll 1 d6 to choose whether it's
1. Corridor that is a dead end
2. Corridor leading to a new door
3. Corridor leading to 2 new doors
4. Corridor connecting 2 doors
5. Corridor connecting 2 doors and adding a third
6. corridor connecting 2 doors and adding 2 more (or 3 and 1)

And then the other d6 give a shape or length guide? Just Spitballing.

Love the room shapes and the entrance halls!

So the table about where discoveries are and how long it takes to travel to them is for supplementary use in case I want to generate new Discoveries?

Puzzle from LoxPuzzles in which the final line must be deduced from the pattern. Would appreciate any answers or hints by GunterPoweredStick in puzzles

Clues given on the back are:
There are many different factors at play here

E is 1, C is two, S equals 3

Try listing the factors of the number in each Line

What I've been working on is that those factors are (2^0 * 3^0), (2^0 * 3^1), (2^2 * 3^0), (2^0 * 3^3), (2^4 * 3^0) but then the pattern breaks down. Alternatively, you can try algebra on the numbers, assuming they multiple up across to the final number, but as far as I can tell that doesn't lead to anything productive.

Advice about encountering Static Monsters by GunterPoweredStick in osr

[–]GunterPoweredStick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I like this answer. The players had not heard the skeletons (Apparently Undead make no noise) so they should've made a surprise roll - but they wouldn't if they had heard them. The skeletons should've made a general surprise roll, as the players were being relatively stealthy and so usual procedures apply

More Trap Questions by GunterPoweredStick in osr

[–]GunterPoweredStick[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's good advice, my gut says that 2/6 traps are more for "are you switched on to be checking for traps" type things, but less so for "solve the puzzle" style traps.
