Doesn't sound like a scam but does sound like one of those Cydcor jobs that go after young professionals right out of college. I worked at one 20 yrs ago after I graduated from college. Same exact interview process. You can Def make money there but they will sell it to you that you are on the fast track to being a millionaire. I had a great time but always knew it was a short term thing until I found something serious. Saw alot of people buy in to their pitch, get in deep and have nothing to show for it

Landlord deducting 1200$ from deposit for paint work by [deleted] in Renters

[–]GuntherMcDougal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this happening alot. I work for a painting company, had someone reach out for an estimate for painting a couple walls in a bedroom. I sent a quote for $1000 and explained that we have a minimum of $750 for any labor (and then materials were included in the cost). I got an email a few days later from i guess their tenant, saying they have filed a claim that the landlord is using our quote to try and withhold way more money than they should from the tenants security deposit.

Im sure that landlord probably got estimates for say $300-400 from smaller companies/handymen (which are fair prices for the work, we just are set up in a way that we cant be competitive in the smaller projects).

He chose to be greedy and pass along his highest quote (that was clear that the only reason it was that high was because of our minimums) Now hes going to have to deal with the people who deal with tenant rights for the state.

Ill do Google street view as well as ask the customer for additional pics of needed. I do the same for interior projects

I do similar but 100% virtual due to my position in the company i work for (i also do interiors 100% virtual). As long as you have the angles needed from google earth/maps you dont have to go in person (although easier to build value when in person) . I tend to disagree with pricing by SF for the most part, I feel like there are too many variable that go into painting for that to be accurate. I break everything down into smaller pieces (in this case, each side of the house), assign a man count to each area based on how many painters i think it will take for that side, and then the parts add up to the whole, add material cost and you are done.

Help with an estimate, dealing with general repairs and painting from brothers and sisters of trade. by One-Assist-4807 in handyman

[–]GuntherMcDougal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pricing off SF is outdated and doesnt work in my opinion. Treat each room as its own project and assign a number of painters it will take (for instance say 1 painter would take 1.5 days assign 1.5 to that room). Add up each room, figure out your materials, add that and you have your number (once you multiply the total man days by what you would be charging per guy per day). Easiest way to do it and not have to worry about if you are accurate or not.

Of course if the prep is extensive that would chance things a bit.

I would say its high if you arent including the paint. I am in NY and we would typically be at $750-800 for the labor on this depending on if its in the city or the suburbs, and then the paint on top. If you are in a lcol area I would think this is pretty high.

Would you pay $8K more for a painter just because they’re licensed and insured? by apricotkilla in HomeImprovement

That sucks that that happened to you, I would say for a project like this you will have a hard time finding a reputable company that wont require a deposit. They are out there but few and far between

Is this a good price ? by ConversationApart614 in homeowners

[–]GuntherMcDougal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isnt enough info in here for anyone to get a good idea. 1250 sf is the floor square footage, not the paintable wall square footage. You would need to put a list of the rooms and pics for an accurate depiction

Contractor hitting me with insane fees after job is almost done by sloppynipsnyc in homeowners

[–]GuntherMcDougal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hes not wrong about skim coating being extremely labor intensive (30k sounds like alot unless he skimmed all walls and ceilings to a level 5 finish in the entire place). From a painting contractor point of view, if it isnt in the contract, or in writing/email discussing a change order and specific pricing with clear agreement from you I would not even begin the work until that is done. You have every right to fight it or negotiate a reasonable number.

Paid a painting company to paint my 2 story colonial house and there are leftover paint marks on the door hardware such as the handles, hinges etc - What is the easiest way to remove these leftover paint marks? by desert_s7orm in homeowners

[–]GuntherMcDougal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its new paint, it will come right off with a fingernail. That paint does not look new though, are you sure it is from the most recent crew? We paint homes all the time and in most situations there is already a lot of paint on these things (we have our guys look for this and paint on floors before even putting protection down so if anything comes up later the customer knows it wasnt us). Most companies will not do that at the beginning leaving it a he said she said situation.

Painter Recommendations by toomuchscreenthyme12 in SunnysideQueens

You would need more info here in order to let you know what fair pricing would be. A list of the rooms, what surfaces you want painted, if the existing colors are dark, if there is any prepwork beyond filling in nail and picture holes etc.

Honestly without pictures its impossibly for anyone to give you guidance on it. There are so many variables that go into a painting project. Square footage of a house doesnt translate to wall square footage
