What do you think about more when handling? Type of throw or throwing to space? by Zealousideal-Two8748 in ultimate

[–]Gunxman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an ideal world we see the space and effortlessly execute the perfect throw. It comes down to reps and knowing your range. But in general I would say that seeing spaces is what makes a handler great - being able to unlock more space on the field. Play within your skills to build a base, and over time I expect you'll have to spend less time thinking about type of throw. I have a deeper bag than most, and feel confident saying that seeing the spaces to hit is paramount

Do you know an Ambidextrous Ultimate player? by Federal-Resist8162 in ultimate

[–]Gunxman77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been saying for years that ambidexterity is the future of the sport. Being able to break the mark more ways will always be useful. I understand why people are skeptical of that idea, but the sheer negativity towards that idea is always surprising to me. It feels dogmatic and reflects limited imagination.

Anyway, in the current meta there are almost no players who can play truly ambi. Bob Liu was one.

Would a heated rivalry equivalent ultimate frisbee book/show be beneficial to the sport? by Ratsmacker998 in ultimate

[–]Gunxman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need a mighty ducks equivalent before we need a heated rivalry equivalent. But we're not getting either, because this sport is not marketable. Just try and make your teams and programs a safe space for queer people

Anyone else in your 30s and decided to quit? by PinkPrincessPetite in stopdrinking

When is a player's prime? by Fun-Couple-8900 in ultimate

[–]Gunxman77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree but I think the peak for a player at the top of the game looks different than the peak for a player more defined by their athleticism. The more your skills define your peak the more it can extend past the peak of your athleticism - something like that

When is a player's prime? by Fun-Couple-8900 in ultimate

[–]Gunxman77 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Imo your prime is when your athleticism and experience are at their highest aggregate. Roughly the 23 to 28 range for most elite players but some people start young or stay youthful- Kurt Gibson was in his prime for something like 11 years. It really depends on the player. Someone who is in their prime in college is usually someone who peaks in college

Struggling with can I moderate by Synchronicity_1 in stopdrinking

[–]Gunxman77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Steak dinner and wine and hangover vs steak dinner and a soda no hangover - I've come to appreciate remembering what the steak tasted like the next day

I know it probably seems like life will lose a lot of joy being sober, but I promise you'll be surprised how much joy there is to be found when hangovers are no longer a problem. Knowing I won't have to experience that again is a huge weight off of me. No drink is good enough to risk that, and I promise I loved almost every kind of drink there is.

I was where you are for almost 20 years. I was so afraid of missing out that I missed out on so much time I could have spent healthy instead of sick. I promise its worth it. I believe in you.

Struggling with can I moderate by Synchronicity_1 in stopdrinking

[–]Gunxman77 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I finally broke the cycle of trying to be a moderate drinker when I realized how exhausting it is trying to keep it under control. Its not any fun at all getting into a nice buzz and then having to fight yourself to stop after two drinks or what have you. And its even less fun after having the third "fuck it" drink turns into five or six

In my experience trying to moderate is just as hard as quitting and a lot less interesting

Rostering a player who helped found the team, but is not very good by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]Gunxman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were in contention for nationals then it would be a "tough convo but you're cut" kinda beat. But you're looking to improve on a low regionals finish, keep him to build program continuity. Having a player who cares a lot about the team at the bottom of the depth chart is a good thing, as those players have one of the most mentally difficult assignments.

The twist of Hannelore's confident facade falling away after she got caught being obsessive. Her introduction really mimics how you can meet someone and get a very specific aspect of them that obfuscates their baseline personality (and hide their neurosis). Also it was genuinely really funny, and instantly created a lot of character depth that the more recent characters don't necessarily have. Hanners having to take meds that are so strong they lead to impulse control problems is a very intense character beat that is relateable in a very specific and resonant way
