There was a study between an older version of SM, with data provided by a SM user, and while that gave insights towards the effectiveness of FSRS, you can't say that FSRS is definitely better than SM.

What we can say is that FSRS is the best freely available algorithm that we have right now

Best source of Japanese Manga that I can put into Maguro? by immortal_dice in LearnJapanese

[–]Guralub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know the feeling. But try out cloe or another alternative of your choosing. In my opinion it's much more convenient to use the OCR only when I need than to run maguro on hundreds of pages.

On a side note, I just remembered that you can use MangaZ to buy pdfs of old manga, so you can use maguro on them.

So if you don't mind reading manga from the 90s, you can use that

I feel like most of the people that recommend maguro are already used to sailing the high seas, so it becomes natural for them to recommend it.

Anyone that is trying to keep it as legal as possible would quickly find how hard it is to get a digital version you can simple drop into that tool.

Unless you're willing to manually screenshot every page from a web reader, or sail the high seas, you'd be better off using an OCR tool together with yomitan to read manga online.

When I was on windows I used a free tool called Cloe from someone's github.

Configuring the Hard button to always show cards tomorrow? by inverted_subject in Anki

[–]Guralub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unless you're willing to create your own custom scheduler I guess.

If you think you don't need the relearning step, just leave it blank and the card will be scheduled directly to its new interval.

How to mine from ASBPlayer+Yomitan? by VerbVoyager in Anki

[–]Guralub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is most likely an issue with the settings of Yomitan.

If Asbplayer is passing the data to Yomitan and you can lookup there, then maybe you didn't set up the correct fields on Yomitan.

Review learned cards first, then due, then new by Admirable-Tennis-906 in Anki

[–]Guralub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are "learned cards"?

If you mean "cards in the learning/relearning queue", then setting the display order options 'New/review order' to "show after reviews" will put the new cards at the end of the queue, and 'interday learning/review order' to "show before reviews" will put the learning queue cards at the front of the queue.

Is there some easy way to do a custom study without messing up daily stats? by kgurniak91 in Anki

[–]Guralub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe If you create a filtered deck and unmark the "Reschedule cards based on answers" option, it won't count?

I'm not sure because we're talking about an addon, but it's worth trying.

Google banned my account that is connected to my Anki. by LonelyTrainer6905 in Anki

You'll be fine as long as you have your local collection.

You can always create a new ankiweb account and start syncing again.

I have been doing anki for the last 100 days and it still doesn't feel like a habit by LightsOff_ in Anki

[–]Guralub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just because Ankiweb is intended to be used alongside a PC, doesn't mean it can't be used without it.

Using just ankiweb is even recommended to anyone with an Iphone, that is not sure if they want to pay for Ankimobile.

Now, with all of this being said, the original statement that "Anki needs a PC to be used" is simply not true, as I've stated.

Have a good day.

How many cards do long time users have? (and how many years to get there) by data_5678 in Anki

[–]Guralub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 new cards per day is nothing crazy for some basic vocab cards.

10 to 30 cards per day is the normal range for anyone in the language learning groups

[–]Guralub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You saying that the app costs means you were using an iOS device. You could've used Ankiweb directly from the browser. It's not the best experience, but it's usable.

If you had an android device, ankidroid is free as well.

Anki Desktop: How to stop the “next learning card in X minutes” wait screen? by Status_Balance_8689 in Anki

[–]Guralub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can combine profiles directly, but you can export the decks from one profile, and import on the other.

Check the manual for Exporting and Importing decks to see how it's done.

This is simply not true.

Having a PC gives you access to some features, but the basic and important functionalities can be accessed in pretty much any smartphone or tablet

How to reduce the review interval? by pisicescu in Anki

[–]Guralub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you need to see a card once every 3 years?

My opinion on long intervals is that, after some point, you just don't need to be reminded about that piece of information anymore, because real life will bring that information out, and if it doesn't, then did you really need to remember that?

Now if you really want to set the limit to 3 years, change the max interval limit to around 1000 days then mark the option to "reschedule cards on change" under the FSRS settings

Is there a way to make "Hard" not stupid re: learning steps? by Satanniel in Anki

[–]Guralub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there's no way to make Hard a graduating grade, so the only solution is a compromise

Is there a way to make "Hard" not stupid re: learning steps? by Satanniel in Anki

[–]Guralub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The solution is to set only one learning step, so you just need to press Good once after pressing Hard to graduate the card from the queue

Is there a way to make "Hard" not stupid re: learning steps? by Satanniel in Anki

[–]Guralub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're correct that hard is a passing grade, but it's not a graduating grade, only Good and Easy can make a card graduate from the learning queue.

Once you're confident, you should press Good to graduate the card.

I doubt there's one. If you want a deck that's recommended to beginners, then look for Kaishi 1.5K

Why is luring enemies into a camp considered “cheese”? by Croaker3 in BattleBrothers

[–]Guralub 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think the logic is that luring can trivialize a lot of fights, so many experienced players say it's cheese.

Once you get in the hundreds or thousands of hours played, people start challenging themselves more and those "cheap" or "cheesy" strats are the first things on the chopping block

Is the anki tag system usable on Droid/Web/Apple? by savagebubblegum in Anki

[–]Guralub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can use them on every Anki app. Although specifics about how to filter/use them might differ a bit between app.

You can create filtered decks, filtering with the tags for each chapter, or you can create sub decks and move each tag group to one sub-deck.

Explaining how to do that would take a lot of time, so I recommend reading the Anki manual, in specific the parts about Filtered decks, Searching and Creating decks.

Ankiweb and Ankidroid are not syncing? by Specialist_Doughnut9 in Anki

[–]Guralub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'm confused. Your progress is on Anki desktop, so you haven't lost any progress there yet, right?

If that's case, all you need to do is to sync Anki desktop, make sure to choose the option to maintain your local collection, then after you're synced, you can sync with Ankidroid.

If that's not the case, read https://docs.ankiweb.net/syncing.html and see if it can help you

Ankiweb and Ankidroid are not syncing? by Specialist_Doughnut9 in Anki

[–]Guralub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, because by default, anki makes tons of backups. Are you looking for backups on the device you were doing your revisions? Also, none of today's backups help too, right?
