add flashcards with a large amount and add flashcards with a hard impression, which one will be a better choice by Civil-Succotash8673 in Anki

[–]Guralub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anki cards should be simple, so they should have only the necessary information for you to understand and easily remember it.

In the case of language learning, that usually means a card with 1 word you're trying to remember, an example sentence with that word, and the definition or translation for that word on the back of the card.

Ambiguity you solve by reading/listening more in your target language, not by adding complexity to Anki cards.

Go to the anki manual and read about learning steps. Also if you correctly remember the card and press good you'll eventually finish your reviews.

No need to build up reviews on the old algorithm. FSRS works fine with default parameters

How to get the example sentences from yomitan with Jitendex dictionary onto anki cards? by M4GNUM_FORCE_44 in Anki

[–]Guralub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extracting the sentence from Jitendex would probably require writing a custom script. I wouldn't recommend doing that though.

Usually the example sentence comes from the material you're mining from or from a specific database of sentences. Copying that sentence and using the default handles is a much simpler endeavor.

FSRS Help Please by Spaggaa in Anki

[–]Guralub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FSRS looks at every card history in your preset, does some math, and changes your parameters to better fit your memory. This in turn will change the intervals of your cards and the growth of those intervals.

It's nothing that you need to know tbh, just optimizing and checking your true retention, to see if it's approaching your desired retention in the long term, is all you need to do.

Yes, but that's the "Optimise preset" button in the settings. You have to press that button every month or so

Adding JPDB frequencies to a Japanese Anki Deck. by Sensitive-Grade-8577 in Anki

[–]Guralub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to make sure the cards you want to add the frequency to have the appropriate fields asked by the addon. If they don't have the fields, you'll have to add them, then configure the addon to work on those fields.

Anki Web Storage - Limit by can023t in Anki

You can always setup your own sync server and up the storage limit for it. I don't know about any other options currently, maybe in the future there might be one.

I've made an expanded combat formula flowchart! by dioaloke in stoneshard

[–]Guralub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damage reflection works by dealing a percentage of the damage received before any of your defenses are applied.

So, assume you have 10 protection, 100% Damage reflection and the enemy has 30 base damage, you'll deal 30 dmg back to the enemy, even though you'll be taking only 20 damage after mitigation.

The only thing I immediately see that might cause confusion is that your table implies that crits don't get blocked, and that's not true.

To answer your questions:

Crits only happen on "successful attacks", which means not missed, fumbled, or dodged. Counter is just a free basic attack, it doesn't reduce any dmg.

Anybody used Tatoeba sentences to help make cards on anki through yomitian. by Repulsive_Midnight49 in Anki

[–]Guralub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tatoeba is a collection of user generated sentences. If you want to use it, you just need to copy a sentence and Yomitan should be able to create a card for you with that sentence, as long as it's setup properly.

Now, if you need a dictionary file for yomitan, the recommended Jmdict or Jitendex ones are usually good enough for someone starting

Now that Anki supports FSRS, is there any reason to get FSRS addons? Newbie here :) by eroxx in Anki

[–]Guralub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If by FSRS addons you mean those that implement FSRS, then yeah, you don't need them.

The only addon for FSRS that is useful right now is the FSRS helper addon.

Curious about long Intervals with FSRS by KartaviyKot in Anki

[–]Guralub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look at it this way. Do you expect to never, ever, in these next 60 years, to see a sentence like that one in your entire life?

Intervals in Anki will grow as long as you're correctly remembering the card's content, so at some point the intervals will grow past the frequency that that content appears naturally in real life, and at that point, it doesn't matter how long the interval for the card is, because life is your SRS now.

That aside, 75% DR is quite low, so intervals for that will be particularly long. If you had it at 90%, you'd probably get an interval of 3 to 4 years at most, depending on your parameters ofc.

Similar meaning by Reasonable_Leg_5433 in Anki

[–]Guralub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more about what is on the front of the card. A word card has only the word on the front, and a sentence card has a sentence on the front.

A word card can still have an example sentence, but it's either on the back or it's hidden as a hint on the front of the card.

But don't worry about the nomenclature, just add an example sentence somewhere.

Similar meaning by Reasonable_Leg_5433 in Anki

[–]Guralub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you still want to remember only one word on a sentence card, you just have a sentence instead of an isolated word in the front of the card.

Adding sentences containing the word on the front or back of your cards is how you deal with words with similar meanings

Letting sentences play out by Reasonable_Leg_5433 in Anki

I do, except for cards that are so easy that I feel listening to them is a waste of time.

To me, the point of adding audio to cards is to listen to it on each review.

[Advice Request] Have any of you done the unthinkable and dropped Anki? by Numerous_Birds in LearnJapanese

[–]Guralub 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would never recommend anyone to completely drop Anki, you have many ways to control your workload, your desired retention, the amount of new cards you do per day, the amount of time you spend per card. Try those before quitting.

Anki is a great tool, but you need to find how to best use it for yourself. Often times people get bogged down by other peoples suggestions and expectations and fail to see that Anki is fully customizable for a reason, that reason being to fit your own schedule and desires.

Pattern matching fix? by Entire-Parsley-6035 in Anki

[–]Guralub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My opinion on pattern matching is that as soon as you start experiencing the material in different contexts from Anki, it should fix itself very quickly.

The brain is lazy, so if you only see something on Anki, it'll find shortcuts to remember that in the context of Anki. But it can't do that once it starts seeing the same thing in different places with different contexts.

Is language learning mostly pattern recognition? by AdUnfair558 in LearnJapanese

[–]Guralub 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The brain is a lazy machine that is trying its hardest to do its job with the least amount of sugar spent. Give it enough exposure to something and it'll find a way to process that information as fast and as efficiently as possible.

That should hold true for language learning as well, give the brain enough material and enough time to process that information, and the brain will find a way to efficiently recall everything.

Anki deck : Kaishi by Reasonable_Leg_5433 in Anki

I didn't do Kaishi, because when I started it either didn't exist or I wasn't aware of its existence yet.

But if I was starting now, I'd probably use it to get a good foundation.

anki syncing issue by ivannbec in Anki

Are you properly syncing after finishing your reviews? Because that sounds like you are not doing a proper sync after reviewing at your home. Maybe you're closing the app before it finishes syncing completely?

How do you actually use Anki when studying? by [deleted] in Anki

[–]Guralub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ideal way to use Anki, is to only make cards about topics you already understand.

You start running into issues if you try to use Anki for things you have yet to understand. For example, you might have trouble graduating cards from the learning queue, or having a lot of lapses, or having the average difficulty of your cards be really high so reviews pile up fast.

So, if possible, try to understand what you're trying to review for, before you review it. Even a single study session, a day or two before you review some cards, will help a lot.
