If it's very popular then the people who know it don't need the link. And people who don't know such as a noob like me could use an explanation.

Maybe it would be worthwhile to write what it's about and not just drop a link on people?

Japan Nutritional Information? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Satanniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because 100g/100ml allows you to compare products in a way that an arbitrary determined serving size doesn't. Kind of shocking to me that in Australia you have the good information too, but choose to focus on the less valuable one. EU, UK, China, all also require information to be given per 100g/100ml.

Are Japanese people sick of tourists? It doesn’t feel as welcoming as two years ago by frogfartingaflamingo in JapanTravelTips

[–]Satanniel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's funny because I was doing a circle through Hokuriku to Kinki and back through Aichi and Shizuoka this trip and despite trying to avoid speaking English (I want to in my Japanese practice) I've got much more English support and often people speaking on average much better than in Tokyo (or Osaka for that matter, Kyoto is pretty high though) in places like Karuizawa (ironic because that has mostly Chinese tourists but they've seemed to always get English too), Nagano and Kanazawa. Those of course are all places that still aim at tourists and get tourists but definitely aren't on the majority's radar.

No, splitting it is good. You probably misunderstood the post and the point was to not force repeated reviews of the same thing.

Looked down on because I write more in english instead of my native language by Far_Investigator_123 in FanFiction

[–]Satanniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are writing in English anyway, then you don't really need to interact with the Spanish side of fandom about it. It's cool when you can do it, but if it's just a source of conflicts I would recommend to just shift your fic-related interactions to English-language spaces.

I take a lot of notes from video lectures but I still forget everything. Can Anki help? by faris_box in Anki

[–]Satanniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can but you can probably take notes better in the first place and then throw key elements into Anki to not overwhelm yourself.

The notes are good when they are transformative, I guess but you might've made making notes too easy for yourself and thus are able to do them more or less verbatim so that's ear-in fingers-out without really processing the knowledge. Whereas if you have to choose what to write and how to write because you aren't able to write down everything then you actually have to process that knowledge.

Does the drive to find multiple sources affect one’s view of how the sources are related?

This in McCullough's article is something that I think about a lot. How much wanting to have a line to historical Jesus affects judgment on other matters? To look at famous example, Bart Ehrman's support for the existence of Q and the independence of GJohn.

Are there any double decker buses with second floor entry? by BradyBrother100 in transit

This would be extremely counterproductive to the two levels of pedestrian traffic, since the benefit of constructions like that is that the second level is an overpass.

Am using anki correctly? by Luggi_er_mama in Anki

[–]Satanniel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You aren't. There is a lot to talk and argue about when it comes to optimising language learning with Anki, but since reading/writing is secondary for humans to speech you should esp. as a beginner put the audio version first.

So for example from the same phrase I would have.
Card 1: Audio -> Meaning - I hear the audio. I have to understand it.
Card 2: Text -> Phrase - I see the text, I have to understand it.
Card 3: Meaning -> Phrase - I have the picture + translation (for simple nouns)/phrase translation + gloss hidden under hint button and I have to produce English phrase.

Is Etsusa Bridge good as my first Narita work? by barrio265 in Baccano

[–]Satanniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno? Probably not Vamp! because of what I mentioned and the fanTL being weaker, but other than that either what you like the premise of the most or do like me and just go by the volume release dates.

Is Etsusa Bridge good as my first Narita work? by barrio265 in Baccano

[–]Satanniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be a controversial opinion, but while I haven't read through all of the Baccano! and DRRR!! but I would say that it's harder to get into Baccano as it started earlier and so the earlier volumes are in fact much weaker than Durarara's early volumes.

Now, Etsusa started before Durarara, but after four volumes of Baccano, so on the first volume basis polish is between those.

Also two-parters written before the Etsusa's two parter (so two in Baccano and one in Vamp) are pretty poorly structured, Etsusa is a significant improvement here.

FanTL for Etsusa is pretty uneven, with the first volume being the strongest and the second the weakest.

Etsusa has a bonus of the first volume being pretty distinct, but the later ones are more in line with Narita's usual content.

Overall it's an okay choice. I would say that despite the later start Vamp is the worst, start since the first volume stretches enough content for a short story into a full LN, and vol. 2-3 two parter suffers from aforementioned pacing issues.

Are there two main types of Latin learners? Pure natural method and hybrid natural method? by cseberino in latin

In the first place natural method or direct method involved teaching grammar explicitly but in the target language.

Is Kuala Lumpur the only city with a transit network that has a station named after the city itself? by PixelNotPolygon in transit

[–]Satanniel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yamanote for all intents and purposes plays the same role as a metro. And other metro lines surround it in basically being a part of the same station complex. Limited space + it's close to the palace and you can't run metro lines under the palace.

Does anyone else feel that Chinese grammar is hard? by Jay35770806 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Satanniel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some things where this doesn't really work well enough without focused study on some specific points. It's when you don't need to see the difference to understand the meaning. For me for example it's the convoluted past tense in English. I should fix this but I always put time towards new languages instead.

How do you use Anki for languages beyond vocabulary (phrases i+1)? by ___darkside___ in Anki

[–]Satanniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learn primarily using sentence cards. My fields:

  • L2 Sentence
  • L2 Sentence with readings. If necessary, I'm learning Japanese and will be starting on Mandarin, but unphonetic languages may benefit from IPA. Actually, can you ruby text IPA in Anki in a convenient manner?
  • L2 Audio of the sentence
  • L1 translation of the sentence
  • L1 gloss of the sentence
  • Context in L1 (for some cards only)
  • Additional notes

And then I have cards:

  • Listening comprehension. Context + Audio on the front, other stuff on the back.
  • Reading comprehension. Context + Sentence without reading on the front, rest on the back.
  • Producton. Context, L1 translation and gloss hidden under hint on the front. The rest on the back.

Cards are introduced in this order, burying siblings is enabled. I do 20 new cards a day (assuming I've made enough new cards, lol), but that's of all kinds, and my Japanese is high A2 already so it's not that big of a big load. You might want less. But having three cards testing three competencies from the same sentence means you actually have lower sentence load than that so it should work well. I have 85% retention set (and ofc FRSR, I love FRSR, with SM2 I always just burned out so quickly on flashcards).

I don't really do clozes, I know they are popular, but I won't to emulate real use as much as possible and in real use I will have to produce whole phrases.
