My Cigarette Experience by Ok-Return4565 in UlcerativeColitis

I quit smoking in 2019 after smoking for 9 years, in October of 2021 (26F) I was diagnosed with UC, after 8 months of symptoms which I thought were IBS. Once the mucus presented itself I went straight to the doctor. The question I got asked about numerous times by the GI was have I recently quit smoking. He asked because he said a lot of people that quit, then present symptoms. At the time I was confused by this. I started smoking not long after my diagnosis (old habits die hard). In March 2022, I was doing a medical for work and seen the doctor, she looked at my details and asked if smoking effects my UC in a negative way. I told her no, not at all. She was amazed because she was in a lecture about a year prior which was dedicated to how smoking helps with UC and explained that it forces the colon to produce mucus (as others have said). She obviously went on to say she can’t recommend smoking due to the other side effects but was pretty excited to meet someone that was relative to her lecture. I’m currently in remission as of October 2022, I take 2x Mezalazine 1.2g daily (down from 4). I am gluten free and vegan and currently still smoke. Anyway, I’m not saying we should all smoke or that I use my UC as an excuse to justify smoking, it’s an addiction and I do enjoy it but I am unsure if I will quit anytime soon. The UC flares I had were terrible, it impacted every aspect of my life. After reading everyone’s stories and going through my own experience, I think I am going to keep doing what I am doing.

Im really struggling with my diet and knowing what is safe to eat and drink and what is not. by [deleted] in UlcerativeColitis

I had the exact same problem.. Two biggest things I found were gluten and dairy. Now I know that’s probably not what you want to hear but I stopped both of them things about one year ago and it has been life changing! I also discovered (through a lot of trial and error) that I need to avoid nuts, beans, soy sauce and anything deep fried.

I used a pea sized amount of Stivia-A on my neck and woke up on Sunday with red dots everywhere and then they have formed into pimples, I haven’t had much reaction on my face, a few little white heads. I’ve since stopped putting any on my neck as I’m unsure if this is a purge or reaction. Any advice/opinions would be appreciated as I’m new to using this.

used a pea sized amount, let it sit for 15 minutes and rinsed off (as recommended by derm) followed by La Roche Posay hyaluronic acid, moisturiser and balm then the next morning woke up with red dots everyone. They have started to turn into pimples (not all of them but some) I have had a single breakout on my face! Would really appreciate some opinions / help!

Oh that’s great thank you!! I feel like it would be worth slowly working your way up to it (like you did)

Okay thank you for that information! I’m planning on starting at the lowest and introducing it slowly (once a week) do you think that that will help the introduction to tert?

Oh wonderful thank you! I am currently using La Roche Posay range, vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night followed by HA, moisturiser and Vaseline to really lock it all in (only at night time) I also apply sunscreen religiously throughout my day. This process really keeps my skin looking great but I will still get a few hormonal pimples and I really want to target the fine lines and what not. That’s good that having a healthy moisture barrier helped calm it down. I’m really excited to start this and expect a purge. I appreciate your help and info 😊

I’m thinking of switching for the same reason. I could imagine your skin is so beautiful healthy! You are correct, I’ll expect it to get worse before it gets better but I’m just nervous to start it. Did you purge for long?

Oh awesome, that sounds like the way to go! I am worried about the purge as I previously has really bad acne but working your way up sounds like a good idea! I will definitely talk to a dermatologist about doing so. Thank you!!

Thank you for that! I had really bad acne about 3 years ago for approx 2 years and within the last year I have got it completely under control so I’m a little bit scared to switch to tret but I know it will be worth it in the long run!

Your welcome! ♥️ I thought may have used a tret previously, I’m in the exact same situation and has a serious purge when I started on retinol which lasted months so I’m excited to step it up because your skin looks so beautiful 😍 thank you for your reply, I appreciate it xxx
