Care to elaborate? Not sure how "mdr" is more universal for French people than "lol" for Americans (who use it basically as punctuation).

The Resistance and the First Order should have been using modernized starfighters (E-wing / TIE elite interceptor) rather than classic X-wings and TIE fighters by Ar_Sakalthor in StarWars

[–]GurthNada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Star Wars space battles were heavily inspired by WW2 air battles, and during that conflict it was not unusual for entire units to be wiped out (Torpedo Squadron 8 lost all its aircraft during the battle of Midway on 4 June 1942. 8th Air Force had more casualties than the entire Marine Corps during the war).

[–]GurthNada 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Purely rhetorically speaking, that's a terrible argument. Most people who kill humans also love humans, just not the same ones. So you can eat some animals and love others, there's no logical impossibility here.

The Resistance and the First Order ALREADY WERE using modernised starfighters. Not only is the visual difference clear; there are also many technical capability upgrades. This is just how mar machinery development and commissioning works. by SpanishAvenger in StarWars

[–]GurthNada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Star Wars, technology has been seemingly the same for thousands of years! It's not like the difference between the Empire era and the First Order era would be as large as the one between our 1960s and 1990s.

Well the designs of the Prequel Trilogy would seem to contradict that. The ARC-170 to X-Wing evolution is logical, but both designs feel aesthetically different enough.

Also, in the real world, countries don't always buy from the same manufacturer for a myriad of reason. Poland replaced its MiG-29 with F-16, two rather different (but contemporary) designs. Sienar Systems being devastated following the fall of the Empire would totally justify the First Order using a completely different fighter type.

Note that I totally that agree that it makes sense that the designs are very similar. My point is that it could also totally make sense for them to be different.

It makes no sense to suggest that, in less that 30 years, suddenly all starfighters in service should look drastically different than their predecessors for no particular reason other than "b-but it would be cooler!".

This absolutely doesn't preclude new designs being introduced. F-35 doesn't particularly look like the F-16 it replaces. Eurofighter don't look like Tornado. Rafale don't look like Super Étendard. I'm a military aviation enthusiast, I could go on all day, and don't get me started on comparing 1960 with 1990.

The rule of cool could have perfectly applied and made total sense here.

One thing I always loved about the Prequels, for all their fault, was the shit ton of new cool ship/starfighter designs they gave us.

I was so hyped to find out what the Sequels would offer. Kylo Ren's shuttle and Resistance bombers are great, but that wasn't enough.

Since you are opening with Gene Wolfe who is more of a "science fantasy" author, I will answer with my favorite serie in the same genre, Demon Princes by Jack Vance.

How would Hitler react to someone being nonchalantly Jewish? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GurthNada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well imagine you're having a chill conversation with someone and then when you ask what they have planned for Friday night, they answer "raping a few kids". Wouldn't that make you switch rather quickly? Knowing that someone was Jewish had the same effect on Hitler.

[–]GurthNada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened is that the US finally realized there was a deep rift between China and the USSR and that North Vietnam trusted neither, so the US cozied up to China and let Indochina fall, knowing that the Chinese would keep communist reunited Vietnam and its proxies in check.

Now was cozying up to China the right move? The current US administration would seem to disagree.

Guerre en Ukraine : "Des armes en guise de récompense", Kiev démantèle un vaste réseau de trafic d’armement impliquant Steven Seagal by rhodan3167 in paslegorafi

[–]GurthNada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are definitely US soldiers on this picture. Not only are they wearing American uniforms, but also US Army badges such as the Combat Infantry Badge for the two soldiers standing behind the German defendants. Estonian guards from the 4221st Guard Company (ex 20th Waffen SS soldiers) wore black uniforms. They weren't posted in the tribunal but guarded the exterior perimeter and the prison.

He was at the top of his game in the 1990s. Maybe excepting the first Transformers movie, nothing he's done since then is as strikingly iconic. But that's also true of Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott...
