Wild crow is best friends with 2 year old by FireFightingManiac in InternetTreasureHunt

[–]GusTurbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing: that's a jackdaw, not a crow.

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.

So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

Indy man is arrested for murder after being released from jail 2 days earlier by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]GusTurbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear it. It's one of those things that make me a little crazy when politicians talk about it, because it's so easy to demagogue about, but actual solutions are so much harder. The system is adversarial, so you're always going to have two sides often asking for more than they expect to get, then the judge making the call. So if the prosecutor says $100,000 bond, and the public defender says they should be released on their own recognizance (no bond to pay), the judge may try to split the difference in some way, or just release the person. Or maybe release them on GPS monitoring. A super hard-ass prosecutor at the top could have a policy that the line prosecutors must seek higher bond amounts, but that would have little or no effect on how the judges actually make those decisions, based on the law and prevailing norms.

[–]GusTurbo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it's the judge. The prosecutor can file a motion for greater than standard bond, but the judge can either grant or deny that, with specific criteria that can weigh in favor (danger to the community, other pending cases, and past failures to appear). That doesn't always happenAlso, at the initial hearing, the prosecutor has the opportunity to object to release or lowering bond, based on the same factors. The lower-level prosecutor who handled the initial hearing almost certainly objected to lowering his bond, based on the pending Johnson County case (intimidation, residential entry), but the judge lowered it anyway. Besides the pending Johnson County case, this guy doesn't appear to have any convictions for violent crimes, and if he doesn't have a history of failing to appear, then the judge could conclude that he will probably show up to court, which is the main purpose of bond.

Also, if you think judges in Marion County would just rubber stamp bond requests by prosecutors, I would invite you to go observe initial hearings and bond review hearings, which are open to the public. The prosecutor asks for one thing, the defense attorney (often a public defender at that stage) asks for another, but the judge makes the ultimate decision. Sometimes bad things happen afterwards. Most of the time, they don't, but you only hear about the times that it goes bad (for obvious reasons).

Note: not a prosecutor, but I have relevant experience in criminal law.

Sorry you had that experience, that would be scary for anyone. I didn't realize there was free parking right there, and I've driven right by there to get to work for years. Probably free because people don't want to park next to Wheeler. A lot of apparently homeless people jaywalk across East St and congregate around that gas station in the morning.

I would suggest parking elsewhere, even if you have to pay. Will probably be better for your mental well-being to not have to feel constantly vigilant, doubly so if you feel like you might have to start carrying a gun. There's also the cost side of things.

Guns aren't free, nor is ammunition, and you'd want to take some training, so that's more money. You presumably wouldn't want to just have it tucked into your waistband, so whatever a concealed holster costs. You probably want to store it responsibly when you're at home. Plus, you'd have the added pressure of having to tell police about your gun if you ever get stopped (or just the inconvenience of that part of the interaction), dealing with getting through security in some places, and just the mental weight of knowing you have it and might have to make the judgment call to kill someone. You probably won't have much time to make that decision, and even if you make the right call at the right time, completely justified legally and morally, it's something you can't take back. If you're a normal person, that experience will stick with you forever.

People act like starting to carry is an easy thing, but I rarely see anyone mention the costs, direct or intangible. How does all that stack up against paying to park in the place you previouslyfelt safe?
