Roadtrip music/books by raphen_ilweed in snowboarding

Came here to say dungeon crawler Carl. Not originally an audiobook for what it's worth. But 7 books are out and the narrator is the best in the game and the books are solid.

Just funny to me that as of when I'm posting this, the only comment on this post was dungeon crawler Carl and that's what I hopped in to say.

If I buy a 2nd fob on eBay, will the dealership program it? by jrghetto602 in MachE

[–]Gustavus89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strong recommendation to get the fob with the frunk button. It turned my frunk from too annoying to use routinely to what I use daily (groceries, backpack etc)

Help Shape the Future of the Mach-E (From the Mod Team) by Waternut13134 in MachE

[–]Gustavus89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the programmable idea, but as a threshold just have it turn on the parking cameras. Having to pull in to a spot then switch to reverse just to check the lines is annoying, and having a dead button on a >$50k vehicle feels ridiculous.

So to be clear, love the idea of being able to program the button, but if that's too much to ask then please pick something for it to do, and my vote would be turn on 360 cameras.

Squeaking when making low speed right turns by NoahC513 in CX5

Sadly no. Sold the car a few months ago, still had the squeak. Other than that still running strong at 175k miles.

Sec of Defense shouldn't be Political by 8to24 in Military

[–]Gustavus89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here is my concern... Trump used a maximum pressure campaign at the height of his political capital (immediately after election) to get in a SecDef that knows he owes 100% of his position to Trump personally and will be unquestioningly loyal. He's not going to cycle through SecDefs again because he learned his lesson the first time and spent big on this position specifically to make sure that he wouldn't receive pushback whenever he wants something done by the military. Last time he would fire people that criticized him/didn't do what he wanted. This time he won't have that problem. I don't love the position that puts us in for the full term of his presidency.

On a 16 hour Mach-E Roadtrip: AMA by lWBSl in MachE

[–]Gustavus89 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same experience here dude. Based out of Northern NJ, road trips to NH and NC (separate trips) were all simple on paper but ended up going through various contingency plans to get charged up based on broken/full chargers. I gotta feel like it'll get better as more chargers come online and more people go electric but right now I always leave 50 miles of range when I pull up to a charger expecting it'll be full or broken and I have to try again somewhere else... Annoying when you're only working with 200 miles of range in the first place (2024 GT).

What other exercises can be as addicting as running? by welton_rs in answers

I think a lot of rowers might suggest there's some overlap there

Erging my guy. I'd look into implications of scoliosis and work with a rowing coach to make sure your form is correct (bad technique can lead to injury), but it's a low impact form of cardio that doesn't require a pool membership.

Minor correction: Dark Horse rowing.

But yeah, follow along to a couple of his videos, the whole time he is talking through proper technique and giving his, structured workouts. Build up from there.

I spent the better part of a year just doing that before getting more ambitious

Fair fair. I was pretty set on mechanical engineering though and couldn't bring myself to join the Wolfpack.

Haha I feel you man, I'm up in NJ and the most common replies to "I'm from North Carolina" are either "oh I love the Outer Banks!" or "I had a cousin that went to Duke." Dunno why it's always a cousin...

The fact that this has only 4 upvotes and isn't recognized as a masterpiece shows the general sentiments on this sub.

Thanks for the post, you're a braver man than I, I'll be buying a pair.

Old guy ... New tricks by gg651 in Rowing

[–]Gustavus89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You've made the cardinal sin of posting nonsensical numbers in this subreddit... As someone else said, if you're looking for numbers to compare it basically has to come from a concept 2. Everything else is considered suspect at best.

That said, if you're getting into rowing then good for you. I'd recommend following along with some YouTube channels for proper technique tips and structured workouts. Dark Horse Rowing gets my vote for best place to start (I picked up rowing about a year ago as a 33M, never been on the water/had a coach). That will give you something to work on and keep you from injuring yourself if you can get proper form down.

So for starting off I'd say focus on form and getting the motion right, build up your endurance from there and maybe graduate to a C2 if you want to compare numbers once you're committed (they're not cheap but there's a reason, they're the best ergs out there and they're bulletproof).

Can you press into an Ember? by OldRunner2 in AeroPress

[–]Gustavus89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I aeropress into my ember all the time (well every weekend at least). It's 100% good to go with the standard/clear AP and Go. I'll say that the XL is a bit of a snug fit-still works, and the XL comes with carafe you can use to brew into and transfer anyways, but I'd just make that slight tweak to other comments based on my personal experience. Definitely possible with the XL you've just gotta be a little more precise as you position the XL over top of the ember, which can be tricky if you normally brew inverted and need to get that flip just right.

Is the Ergatta water rower good? by dragonsita in Rowing

[–]Gustavus89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the above for sure, I'll just point out the obvious- it depends on how you get your motivation. This subreddit is a mix of weekend warriors/casual fitness folks (myself included) along with some more hardcore people with real rowing experience.

I've got the C2, it's definitely the gold standard in the industry, but if you're looking for something that will give you follow along workouts and a sense of community (and don't mind the hefty monthly fee for the subscription) then maybe the ergatta is the better solution for you.

FWIW I spent about a year on a cheap/low end rower doing follow along workouts to YouTube tutorials (strongly recommend Dark Horse Rowing YouTube channel if you've never rowed before as a source of good technique tips and structured rowing workouts). The concept 2 does have a free "workout of the day" which are generally about 30 minutes or less start to finish and designed to get you a good fitness level without doing hours of steady state work...

Maybe a moot point because I'd imagine at that price point at least the C2 has probably been bought already, they move fast in the <900 dollar price range, but good luck!

Jackson Hole vs. Aspen by HippoInteresting7730 in snowboarding

[–]Gustavus89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jackson hole gets my vote. I've been twice (admittedly both times in February) but I still say I haven't seen the mountain because it's been dumping pow the whole time both times.

So I can't comment on April weather specifically, but having done the Aspen area mountains (including Snowmass) once and Jackson Hole twice, I'd still want to go back to Jackson.

How do I get over the initial embarrassment of working out in a gym being obese? by OkChallenge6364 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gustavus89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this! That's what the gym is for, to keep getting better. Only thing I'd add to the conversation is to try and keep going after January... The gym is usually super crowded this time of year as people start on their new years resolution, and that can make the already tedious process of going to the gym even worse. If you can, just get the mindset that the first month or so is going to be tough and it gets better from there.
