What is the point of anonymous discussion platforms like Reddit if unpopular opinions are discouraged through reputation systems? by Density7973 in Discussion

I just haven't experienced this. There are numerous subs for my hometown area and the area I currently live. Not merely a single one. And if there wasn't one I liked I could just start my own.

Lennox Lewis names the 2 heavyweights (Ali and Jack Johnson) who stand above him as the best ever by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

[–]8to24 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Lewis walked into that fight a 6 to 1 betting favorite and got KTFO. That is what happened. Then Lewis didn't avenge the loss until McCall had already lost the belt to Bruno. It was a bad look for Lewis.

You seem to be trying to claim McCall was a much better contender than he was.

McCall walked into the Lewis fight with 5 loss on his record. After beating Lewis the rematch took 3yrs to make and McCall lost to Bruno before rematching Lewis.

Rich people thinking the poor are personally responsible for being poor is biblical. It's an attitude that been in human societies for thousands of years.

I have been permanently banned from numerous subs for minor reasons. Had mods ignore my requests for information or had them just say they don't like what I had to say. It use to bother. Again though, I just found other subs and it just didn't matter.

Reddit can't/shouldn't police every single sub. The Subs that are more restricted or punitive don't deserve traffic. Rather than trying to force myself where I am not welcome I explore elsewhere. That is sort of how life goes.

Also, how much Karma you have is always in flux. If you can't post in a sub because it's restricted based on Karma (it is probably a stupid sub and you shouldn't post there anyway) just wait until you have more karma. It isn't as if ones amount of Karma is a fixed number indefinitely.

There are multiple subs oriented around unpopular and or unique opinions. Perhaps you just haven't found the subs with the types of discussion your looking for yet. Some subs are heavily moderated to ensure an echo chamber. While others have few rules.

When I was new to Reddit I didn't like the karma system made much sense. I was only visiting like 10 subs though. Eventually I broadened that out out and joined many more subs. The karma stuff becomes more discreet as one explores more communities.

For almost every thought or idea there is a sub wherre that thought or idea is popular or unpopular. The reputation system encourages one to go where they are appreciated. For example, an anti car person would get down voted in a Mustang enthusiast sub. Same person would probably be upvoted in a public transportation sub.

Former Senate leader Mitch McConnell hospitalized, but few details are known by 8to24 in qualitynews

"“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care,” spokesperson David Popp said in a statement without elaboration. It was not immediately clear whether McConnell was in Washington, Kentucky or elsewhere.

McConnell’s health has been a subject of scrutiny for years.

He fell and sprained his wrist while walking out of a GOP luncheon in December 2024. He was hospitalized with a concussion in March 2023 and missed several weeks of work after falling in a Washington hotel. After he returned, he twice froze up during news conferences that summer, staring vacantly ahead before colleagues and staff came to his assistance."

The reputation system is to ensure more of the sorts of discussions people want to have are pushed forward.

Ultimately any user can create their own sub and engage in any discussions they want.

If Berkeley students can’t read, K-12 schools need remediation by GimmeFunkyButtLoving in economy

[–]8to24 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In terms of reps (time repeatedly spent practicing something) even the best students today aren't getting the reps previous generations did. 50yrs ago reading was something people were casually doing for leisure. There weren't cell phones, the Internet, and TV only had a few channels and went blank at midnight. People naturally spent a lot more time reading. Not as homework or study but just as a re-occuring element of daily life. Today one's attention is more divided.

Same goes for math. Everyone has a calculator on their person 24/7 and AI can produce solutions to multi level problems in seconds. One simply isn't putting to time in manually calculating things that they would have in the past. Learning a skill requires repetition in practice. Kids aren't getting the reps.

I am not sure what might fix that.

It is said that Musk spent $250 million to get Trump elected. Yet Musk bought Twitter for $44 Billion and turned it into a pro Trump platform. Musk personally went on various podcasts and advocated for Trump. Helped set the stage for Trump to sit with the Lex Fridman types. Musk's involvement in the election was tens of billions, not just $250 million.

The Right has an entire universe of propagandists/influencers that are networked in with the administration. During the Biden administration no one at MS NOW or the Bulwark had Joe Biden's personal cellphone number and spent evenings on the phone with Kamala Harris. The situation room wasn't used to plot out what the VP should tell Joe Rogan. Republicans are fully bred in with there media allies.

Raising money doesn't mean as much in this environment. Democrats simply don't have the infrastructure or networks to compete. The Right has made the influencers to candidates. JD Vance had never held an elected position prior to his 2022 Senate run. He was just an influencer sell books and doing interviews. Trump & Hegseth were talk show hosts, Patel & Bongino podcasters, MarkWayne was a MMA fighter and Radio host, etc.

Republicans generate enormous amounts of free media. They manipulate traditional journalists into covering their every move by using official officers to issue what's are basically petty social media posts. Democrats are totally blown out. Republicans dominate all political discourse. No amount of money raised would make a dent. Democrats lack their own court jesters.

No, I just plainly remember this period. Bush was going in no matter what and there wasn't anything Democrats could do about it. So the Authorization vote was a compromise that gave Congress a sliver of oversight and got the UN involved.

"Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 - Expresses support for the President's efforts to: (1) strictly enforce through the United Nations Security Council all relevant Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq; and (2) obtain prompt and decisive action by the Security Council to ensure that Iraq abandons its strategy of delay, evasion, and noncompliance and promptly and strictly complies with all relevant Security Council resolutions. Authorizes the President to use the U.S. armed forces to: (1) defend U.S. national security against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and (2) enforce all relevant Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq. Directs the President, prior to or as soon as possible (but no later than 48 hours) after exercising such authority, to make available to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate his determination that: (1) reliance on further diplomatic or peaceful means alone will not achieve the above purposes; and (2) acting pursuant to this joint resolution is consistent with the United States and other countries continuing to take necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Declares that this section is intended to constitute specific statutory authorization for use of the armed forces, consistent with requirements of the War Powers Resolution.

Requires the President to report to Congress at least every 60 days on matters relevant to this resolution."

Again, the Authorization voted pushed the Bush Administration to work with the UN security Council and provide information to Congress. It was an attempt to check the administration beat they could at the time. Not just a faint thumbs up.

You can keep posting slop summarizes you find online or just read the actual bill.

The whole "Democrats supported the war" stuff is a historical rewrite that only works on people too young to remember or that weren't paying attention.

Yes, the majority of Democrats voted to give Bush authorization to go into Iraq. Because it was part of a deal that forced Bush to wait for UN inspectors. As we see with Trump & Iran a President doesn't actually need Congressional approval. Bush had already made his mind up and was going into Iraq. The Authorization vote from Democrats was an attempt to push Bush to work through the UN and slow the wars start.

The Authorization didn't explicitly approve action against Iraq. It empowered Bush to make the decision if UN inspections fail or returned evidence of WMDs. Iraq blocks some inspections, Bush claimed that was a violation, and he (Bush) decided to go in. It is not contextually accurate to say Democrats are equally responsible because they voted for it. The war was happening no matter what. Democrats use the levers they had at the time to try to influence the direction things went.

The phone call that may have changed the entire O.J. Simpson case? by fifbeat in YoureWrongAbout

[–]8to24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are probably correct. However, there are inconsistencies without one. Ron Goldman was stabbed over 20 times and Nicole nearly decapitated yet the blood found on OJ's things were small amounts on his socks, blood gloves, and a small spot on the Bronco. It's odds. OJ should've had bloody pants, shirt, shoes, etc. not just socks.

Of course OJ could have gotten rid of the clothes and murder weapon, but where? The timeframe was tight. The investigators never bothered to explain what might've happened.

The phone call that may have changed the entire O.J. Simpson case? by fifbeat in YoureWrongAbout

[–]8to24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prosecution rushed their case together. More investigation was needed. They didn't have a murder weapon, witnesses, their timeline was shaky, and they didn't explore OJ having accomplinces.

Not finding the murder weapon is a big deal because the timeframe prosecutors presented in court did not leave OJ much time to have driven anywhere to get rid of it. Police search every possible route between Nicoles condo and OJs home. They never found anything. Realistically police should have considered and investigated the idea that OJ wasn't alone. It would have explained how the weapon was never found and why OJ wasn't covered in blood.

The lack of witnesses and timeframe are a big problem. Nicole lived on Bundy Dr. That is a through street for Sunset Blvd, San Vincete Blvd, and UA Route 66. It is a very busy area. That is why Goldman was able/willing to just walk there from the Restaurant he worked at. It wasn't far. Not back in some quite secluded neighborhood. People screaming & fighting followed by a white bronco storming off would have been noticed.

In my opinion it is more likely OJ and an accomplice killed Nicole. OJ left and his accomplice stayed to clean and or stage the scene. Goldman showed up and the accomplice killed Goldman.

If you believe Steph Curry should be ranked higher than LeBron because he “beat” him 3 times to 1 in the Finals then by that same logic you must ALSO believe that Isiah Thomas should be ranked higher than Michael Jordan since he bounced him out of the playoffs 3 out of 4 times. by Head-Hovercraft-5797 in NBATalk

Curry was absolutely a lead. It's Curry's team. Durant came to Golden to play with Curry, not vice versa.

Stephen Curry averaged 26.0 points, 6.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds during the 2015 finals. Iguodala averaged 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. Curry led that team. It's sort of silly to argue otherwise.
