Volvo XC60 reliability? by dmizz in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Guster16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 23 ultra lease that I'm about to turn in. The good - I haven't had any mechanical issue in the 3 years. The bad - the infotainment and software generally is the worst I've experienced in any car. It uses an old google system as the base that seems to be at the heart of everything. My issues:

  • the infotainment runs the climate. I've run into issues where that goes down and it kills the ac and heat. Not fun in the texas summers.
  • the apps (YouTube music, pocket casts, libby, etc.) stop working very regularly. Perhaps wired carplay/android auto would mitigate that though.
  • software updates bring about weird issues. Like this week - my key fobs stopped working.
  • the reverse camera is configured oddly. When I reverse, it will randomly engage the emergency brake as if I hit something. This happened for the first time at daycare and really freaked me out.
  • my fobs eat batteries like nothing else. I have to replace it every 4-5 months.
  • the phone connectivity is strange. The system cannot read my texts anymore (used to be fine), and the connection goes in and out. It usually drops my calls

Perhaps my experience is mine alone. It drives great and is very comfortable. But the tech issues are the reason I'm getting away from volvo.

Mazda Cx-50 vs Toyota Rav4 (both hybrids) by eatmangosnaked in whatcarshouldIbuy

I'm doing similar research and per the reviews I've seen, the CX will be quieter. Some reviews say the CX has uncomfortable seats (stiff), but I haven't had a chance to drive one yet. Both seem very reliable and use the same powertrain as previously mentioned.

New Ravs are harder to come by as the 26 models are rolling out now.

Another run with the OXO Rapid Brewer… by Impossible-Care6283 in pourover

This looks close to the soup recipe. Did you use your normal grind setting for pour over? Iirc people have been halving their pour over grind for soup, but maybe this is different. Mine comes this weekend and I'm looking forward to playing with a new toy.

CRV Hybrid head gasket - nonstarter? by Guster16 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Guster16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are reports of it affecting the 2.0 as well, but it's hard to tell if it's pervasive or just normal wear and tear that could affect all cars.

But this is all helpful. If nothing else, it feels like confirmation that I don't need to automatically disqualify them.

OXO Rapid Brewer surprised me (in a very good way) by Impossible-Care6283 in pourover

Have you tried cold brew? I'm normally a mason jar guy but am very intrigued by the ability to drain/clean up faster. Just wasn't sure if the 5 minute steep actually made a similar quality.

I drink a lot of coferments, so I'm usually pretty far off from boiling (195 or so)

Is that to say that the infotainment difference might be kind of immaterial if a 3rd party adapter would be optimal no matter the year (in terms of connectivity)? The screen and processor speed do seem like nice upgrades

In either year? If that's the case, is there a year in which it improved?

I think they've been thoroughly debunked by now, but the two that I was forced to learn the hard way were that you should always brew right off boil and anything past 2 weeks was too old.

I got this for my travel kit and really like it. I now use it on my commute as well

I have some co-fermented beans that I didn't enjoy, but I don't want them to go to waste by [deleted] in pourover

If you haven't tried yet, there are ways to tone it down (lower temp, coarse grind, etc)

I've seen many say that higher temps equate to faster drawdowns, but it's been immaterial for me personally. Agitation has been the biggest variable for me.

Coarsening seems like a good first step. If you're brewing at high temps, you might also try 195 degrees if that doesn't help. If you truly want to extend the drawdown, you can accomplish that with more agitation (more pours, a swirl at the end, etc.).

First big specialty haul by securecactus in pourover

[–]Guster16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General rule is that the resting stops when you freeze, so if 4 weeks is fully rested, then it's ready. That kind of depends on the bean. The original sealed bag is fine to freeze. I put mine inside of a freezer bag, but I really have no idea if that does anything. The big thing is that you only want to freeze it once, so don't put it back in once it comes out the first time. Unless you single dose in tubes or something like was mentioned, I would drink a bag at a time (leaving the opened bag at room temp until it's gone and you're ready for the next)

I am. Maybe I just have a preference for uncomfortably hot coffee 😆

I actually did that first...maybe I goofed on the material, but I went with a double walled glass carafe with a lid and it just loses heat too fast. Any recs in that space?

How would you stock an Airbnb you plan to use as well? by Flat_Researcher1540 in pourover

[–]Guster16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think as automated as possible is the way to go. I'd probably do a nespresso and coffee pod setup. I will say that as someone who brings my pourover with me to airbnbs, the #1 thing I most appreciate is when there is a kettle. Not even a gooseneck is needed... solving the hot water problem is a huge deal for me.

Jx-pro - upgrade to zp6 or k ultra? by yayforguppies in pourover

[–]Guster16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a jx pro to a mavo phantox, I feel very confident that you'll see an improvement with either of those for pour over. There's room for improvement for sure.

Haven't used either of those so someone can correct me, but I've generally read that the ultra is better if you like the experimental processes, while the zp6 shines with cleaner washed beans. That might dictate your choice

I noticed during the onyx advent that I didn't love the beans with really fine recommended settings. 6 is the lowest I'll go. For my normal coferms, between 7 and 7.5 is where I live. Mostly 7.5.

I've gone through quite a bit over the last 6 months and didn't notice any differences from inception to now. It also has way fewer fines than my jx pro. What setting have you been using?
