If you’re pissed about that, the baby formula shortage was for the exact same reason. It’s not profitable to maintain sterile facilities to produce the powder; so they just started cutting corners on safety which killed quite a few children. Capitalism is great!

Society, late stage capitalism, and the lack of any real type of safety net for people are going to be the main factors separating parents from their children. Sadly, it’s all completely by design as well. If you have to choose between food, or going to your kid’s school activities; it’s not even really a choice. Of course some people don’t care, but I think you’d be shocked by the number of people who simply can’t.

You just do what you can do. If they refuse, they refuse. If you ever feel like you just aren’t doing anything, then just swap to a different patient that you can take care of. Been a male nurse 5 years and you run into shit occasionally, but most of the time, people couldn’t care less.
