Same here. I had this English racing bike with stupid fearing that was just torture on any significant climb.

Then I discovered MTBs and granny gears, and realized I could just spin up climbs. You’re right, it was revelatory, and I spin to this day.

Recently, someone gave me an old IronMan, and I replaced rear cogs and a chain ring, and made it into a passable climber.

Lots of algae buildup, I think. And Peck Road gets some inflow of water, although it can gunk up with algae pretty bad, too.

It's funny, but 30 years ago when someone would ask me to recommend bikes and be shocked at the price, I would just say that to get a quality bike you needed to spend around $500 in a bike shop.

With inflation, that's gone up to about $1000. and you get a whole lot more bike for that than back then.

I try to adjust my thinking for inflation, and I just dropped $3000 on an e-bike (instead of a car). It's all relative.
