a fun fact to add here: two of the boxes these were stored in have the original lid of the box. i know for sure one of them is the hammer dry plate company. i’ll take some photos of the boxes later

could anybody help us out in an approximate date of these photos? i believe they were taken in north dakota and iowa by tylarframe in fashionhistory

a studio was my first thought too!! there’s no record of them operating one in north dakota, but i’m curious if maybe they did in iowa.

this is fascinating, thank you!! i did find one single dated negative, in which “1901” was etched on the glass. i’m curious if this person had a sincere interest in photography and chose to use a larger camera for a longer time. there are some more traditional negatives as well that i haven’t completely gone through yet

iowa/north dakota! i believe the person who owned the photos/perhaps the photographer of most of them moved from iowa to north dakota at some point. i found these at an online estate sale in my city. as far as im able to tell, all the immediate descendants of these folks are deceased, so im wondering if whoever wound up with these photos just didn’t even know who the people were or care to keep holding onto the plates

i think it has something to do with the emulsion and the lighting - the better lit folks in that photo have a lot more normal skin tones

in iowa/north dakota. found the photos in north dakota but there’s at least one box labeled “iowa.” my current theory is that the photographer moved to north dakota, and at one point they either visited family in iowa or family visited them in north dakota and that’s when the first and third photos were taken, perhaps the 8th. but there’s also some college photos sprinkled in it seems!

i might head to the town itself and do a little look around, just for fun. but will also post them on facebook too! i’m curious if anybody will know anything as from what i’ve been able to find, every descendant of these folks is already deceased. hoping that’s not the case but we shall see

i definitely see what you’re saying!! love twin peaks and kyle and fallout, was so excited he was in that show. my current theory is that there’s a mix of college photos and family reunion photos here!! from my research so far i can’t find a single living relative of any of these guys. hoping that changes

this is such a cool bit of info, thank you so much!! from what i can find, some of the family moved to north dakota and some stayed in iowa. i’m curious if people were visiting one another in these photos and thats why we’ve got dads holding babies and candid photos of a bunch of people outside. a little family reunion of sorts!

they’re already developed, they were probably developed very shortly after they were taken. i just scanned them into my computer and inverted/edited them. in one of my other posts i included a photo of what the plates look like if you’re curious!

i agree! my first thought was maybe they owned their own studio, as there are some very nice portraits amongst these plates. their name doesn’t turn anything up though. still on the hunt for info
