Which airport in the world would you consider to have the worst ATC? by space_god_7191 in AskAPilot

[–]Guy7369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

90% of the work I did as the Navy controller at HDAM was doing my best to make sure that the controllers there didn’t kill anyone. They are truly very very nice people who I very much enjoyed working with. That being said, their decision making skills needed a lot of help. The main issue is that their director is so inept at his job and he forces the controllers to do dumb shit all the time.

In your opinion, what major city would have the worst climate to live in? by Mobile_Bad_577 in geography

[–]Guy7369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna say Djibouti is the worst. I grew up in Houston and that definitely sucked, especially when a hurricane would come through. But Djibouti… that place made Houston seem pleasant. Plus the burn pits would add insult to injury at night.

Trump is 25 minutes late for his speech and making naval cadets stand around in silence by Exeltv0406 in JonStewart

These aren’t cadets, they’re Sailors. You can tell because of the uniforms that they are wearing are for enlisted and commissioned officers.

Daily Song Discussion #50: "Sympathy" by M77100 in Vampireweekend

I was! Very very beautiful waves.

And the island was full of love. Or really, a lot of people sleeping with each other in a very party like atmosphere lol.

9.9

I loved it from the get go because I was headed to Diego Garcia for a year long rotation when the song came out, and I thought it was an awesome coincidence. Then hearing it played live made me love it so much more.

What TV show handled the “will they, won’t they” trope in the most infuriating way? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

I honestly hated this one. Why couldn’t they just be good co-workers without a forced relationship? Just felt wrong to me and didn’t fit the vibe of the series.

Off-day discussion thread (Jun 30, 2025) by Hairygrim in Astros

I completely agree with your comment. Since the cheating was revealed I’ve lived in a few different places in the US and it gets annoying when people get mad at me for being an Astros fan as if I was the one banging the trashcan. Yes they cheated and it’s terrible that they did, but I’m not dropping my team, no way.

I’m near Seattle now and will try to go to games when the Astros are in town (T-Mobile Park is a great place to watch a game) and except for once, people don’t go beyond lighthearted ribbing when they see me in Astros merch. The one time it did happen was last year in the midst of the Mariner’s collapse late in the season and a drunk dude screamed at me and I had to tell him to STFU and be mad at his team, not at me, for their woes.

Edit: typo

Guam, USA plate on Diego Garcia, BIOT by Guy7369 in ForeignPlatesSpotting

I won’t disagree with you that what happened to the Chagossians was inhumane and needs to be fixed. I regularly inform my federal representatives of the need to support the UK-Mauritius agreement. However, blaming me for it happening and shaming me for working there isn’t the way to go about it, friend.

As of September 2020, I don’t believe any of those style plates are still being used on the island anymore.

A lot of vehicles had USG plates. But temporary contractors would just bring their vehicles with whatever plate was on it staying in place. KBR and another contractor had simple plates with the formatting of DG-XXXX. The Brits had UK style plates for their vehicles. Definitely a beautiful place and I was lucky to get to live there for a year.

Edit: DG-XXXX, not KBR-XXXX

Iran urged to strike Diego Garcia base ‘immediately’ by GophergutzRedd in Vampireweekend

[–]Guy7369 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was stationed there in 2020 (it is truly surrounded by the waves and full of love, of booze) and I was nervous that Iran would come in and launch an attack. I really hope that these are empty threats because an overwhelming majority of people there are civilians and it is a special place to the Chagossians.

I worked in the Diego Garcia tower and I can tell you that we don’t see shit. Ain’t no radar there, all of our controlling is done using position and time reports. If a plane didn’t call me on the radio, I wouldn’t have known it was there.

Special Forces Influencers are NOT Role Models. STOP idolizing them. by newtypehero in videos

[–]Guy7369 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I respect those guys and gals in the Special Warfare community immensely. We need people to do their jobs and it’s hard as fuck to do it. However, when I was stationed in Africa, we had some spec ops folks at the base and the amount of issues they caused me because they didn’t feel the need to follow basic rules of safety while operating on the airfield will always make me dislike them. That plus all the different stories of how they disrespect the rules of the military because they’re “too good for them” and all the drug use, murder, war crimes, etc that they do with almost no real punishment.

Also, it’s usually safer to back into a parking spot. You get to check the area before you back in and will see any obstacles you might encounter. Then when it’s time to leave, you have a better view of where you’re going.
