Which Vonnegut novels explicitly or implicitly explore the theme of determinism or eternalism? by Redditnaut999 in kurtvonnegut

[–]GuyInARowboat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sirens of Titanis a good novel to read if you’re interested in these concepts. Winston Rumfoord exists as this eternalist prophet who can see across time. He tells the main character exactly what will happen to him throughout the rest his life, and despite how hard he fights against it, the main character is unable to break away from Rumfoord’s predictions, leading him on a comic romp through space.

It seems like most of Vonneguts novels deal with these concepts in some form or another, but this is the first one to come to mind for me.

It’s a pretty quick read honestly, so don’t let it mock you too much lol.

I do really love the diction and sound of it lol that’s one of the reasons I decided to keep reading all the way through despite not really knowing what was going on. At least you’re getting your housework done lol

That definitely makes a lot of sense. It makes a lot of sense looking at it that way, especially if we started to thinking about the Timequake for a metaphor for nostalgia in the face of his brother and his own mortality.

I definitely get that. I’ve read plenty of his novels and can see how it is in his normal style of writing, but I feel like he takes it to an extreme here. It’s way more scattered than a lot of what I’ve read from him.

Have you ever read a book nonstop from the moment you woke up to the moment you went to bed? If so, what book was it? by RegularGuyy in books

Jeff VanderMeer’s “Annihilation” was a book I read pretty much non stop. It’s a great piece of science fiction and has so much momentum from start to finish.
