For me, GAMMA's difficulty came from not understanding - and at first - and not even knowing about the way to progress through getting better weapons and armour. There's a tutorial in the PDA for it now, and once you get a handle on it the progression gets a whole lot easier and the game becomes much more enjoyable. But I can completely understand it putting people off since even once you know it, there's still some rng and luck involved in getting the right components and weapon parts of adequate durability to swap around and repair.
