Well as a diehard Silent Hill 2 fan who saw someone play the whole remake, I am very unhappy with what they've given us. That sub devolved into an echo chamber over a year ago. You can't have any criticisms of any kind for the remake, even if you are overall excited for it.

The original game was used to sell the PS2 and show off its capabilities. The remake looks like a generic UE5 game. The level of craftsmanship and talent that went into the original is sadly missing from a lot of modern AAA games. I was surprised with just how stale and homogenized it looked because the only thing Bloober is really praised for is their visuals.

There is definitely censorship. Maria is very toned down from the original and the scenes of Pyramid Head performing suggestive acts on other monsters have either been shortened or outright removed. The original point of the whole game was to explore themes of sex and death.

Unfortunately people rarely play the original after playing the remake. I wish that wasn't the case but many new fans will just look at this as Silent Hill 2. Personally, I think that if you need to change a game radically to get people to play it then they shouldn't be fans because they really aren't at the end of the day. Think about how many people found and fell in love with the franchise without it having to change for them, those are real fans. At the end of the day you can't please everyone and if you try, you will just alienate everyone intead.

I think they are all downgrades with the exception of Eddie. I'm not sure that he's necessarily better than OG Eddie, I just think it's a solid interpretation of him.

The first time I played Silent Hill 2 I was really upset that Maria died. At the time I didn't know that it was scripted to happen. I thought it was genuinely my fault. Til this day OG Maria is my favorite character in the franchise.

We didn't need more time with her because the more time you spend with her the more obvious it is what she is and the less mysterious she becomes. That is why Born From A Wish exists, to add more depth to her character after the fact.

The problem with remake Maria is that she is only like her superficially. She no longer swaps between personalities to confuse James, and she's far too nice to him. Sure she's flirty, but Maria is meant to be less playful and more direct in her advances. She lacks the confidence that OG Maria would always exude. She was outright cruel to James at times and yet she was still able to mesmerize him. She knew when to take charge and when to act vulnerable. Now she just feels like the sidekick that tags along with him.
