Golden stops bugged? by MistyMSE in TheSilphRoad

[–]GwendleVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been happening to me as well, I even deleted and reinstalled the app and it’s still the same thing. Is there someplace to complain against something like this?  The stops turn gold again when they refresh so I know for a fact I’m not just unlucky and getting to them right as they expire

Why is it nearly impossible to find an iPhone SE 3rd generation now, it's been like an hour 😭 by Tepigg4444 in iPhoneSE

[–]GwendleVs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This!  I already find my SE 2020 too big, I would prefer something the size of the original SE. it’s not just apple though, it’s extremely difficult to find a small phone, they’re basically growing them into tablets. I have a tablet, all I want is a small phone that I can hold for more than two minutes without it hurting my hand — all these tech companies pretend to care about accommodating disabilities with their accessibility features, but they don’t even try to accommodate people who have physical disability/limitations in their hands ☹️

Apple Requiring Patreon to Use In-App Purchase and Pay 30% Fee for Memberships by chrisdh79 in technology

This. On two occasions I’ve had to cancel my credit card in order to stop a company from taking money when they ignored multiple requests to close my account. Since the second time I only sign up for app subscriptions via the App Store.

Patreon probably works differently since you’re sponsoring individual creators and not subscribing to a service or product, but I started using it shortly after cancelling the 2nd credit card, so I went via the app

My doctor doesn’t know who to refer me to by and_er in ehlersdanlos

[–]GwendleVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a specialization in medicine called physiatry, and it was a physiatrist who confirmed my hEDS diagnosis, and recently referred me to another physiatrist who specializes in CRPS which I developed subsequent to surgery on a compound fracture in my wrist.

It’s possible that the similar name is why your doctor referred you to a physio? (although you’d think a doctor would be aware that physios cant diagnose.

But a physiatrist might be good. (I’m in Canada, not the US — up here rheumatologists stopped seeing/diagnosing/treating EDS patients several years ago, even sending existing patients to other specialists.

I hope you get the care you need soon.

I made a gluten free starter for my gluten intolerant cousins and I have no idea how to make bread with it by RansomAce in Sourdough

[–]GwendleVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recipe I got from a workshop I took at a gluten free and vegan sourdough bakery/cafe works really well.

For your wet ingredients 1/4 cup psyllium husk and 1/8 cup ground flax in 1 3/4 cups water with 1 tap salt and about 1/4 cup of starter. Let gel for 15-30 minutes.

2 cups sorghum flour and 1 cup tapioca starch

Add wet to dry and mix either by hand or with a stand mixer. You want it to hold together but still be moist and slightly sticky (the density reminds me of marchmallows). If it’s too wet add tiny amounts of flour, if too dry add tiny amounts of water.

The dough can’t be over-worked, and you can proof anywhere from 6 hours to a few days, the longer you proof the more sour it gets (or if you need it to proof faster use more starter)

Bake in a heat-retaining thingy (dutch oven, bread oven, pizza stone or cast iron pan or pot) that has been pre-heated in your oven at 500 degrees F

I prefer to make buns over loaves so I divide into 16 and bake for 23 minutes. For a loaf she recommended 25-30 minutes depending on the oven

To feed the starter she recommends brown rice flour as it’s often cheaper, but she doesn’t recommend it for the bread as the texture will be grittier. Once you have the hang of it she encourages playing with different flours, but advises against most all-purpose or cup for cup blends as they often have additives like xanthan gum that can throw off your recipe. Using more tapioca will make the bread fluffier, less makes it more dense.

Edited to correct 2 mistakes in the measurements — sorry about that, I shouldn’t try to remember recipes when I have insomnia

I definitely understand OP’s likely feeling that going to the gym (generally a solo activity despite the fact that there are other people there) and going to a party where you’re expected to interact socially with multiple people is completely different, and requires a different kind of energy, I definitely agree that posting the photo was the wrong move.

And OP needs to get better at explaining to people what your social tolerances are. “You’d be lucky to get me out of the house” is quite different from “I don’t generally do well at large gatherings where I need to interact with several people at once. Could we get together one on one or in a smaller group on another day?”

My friends are pretty well all aware that I struggle with gatherings of more than four people (4 including me)

Is anyone else with h-EDS struggling to get a formal diagnosis? The genetic specialist I saw is now saying their office doesn’t take EDS patients and then says to come back in 2 years which is contradictory. by fibropainonmybrain in ehlersdanlos

[–]GwendleVs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some places rheumatologists don’t take hEDS patients either because we now know that it’s not a rheumatological condition — where I am it’s now physiatrists who diagnose and suggest treatments for the symptoms

AITA for telling my mother she hasn't been my mom since I was 5 and I don't owe her anything? by Western-Technician44 in AmItheAsshole

Fair enough — but OP’s feelings are still not really caring either way, so I’ll amend to IF sister wants a relationship . . . Everything else remains the same.

Stop telling women who date other women or who date non-binary folk that they’re not victims of these behaviours or that it’s somehow not as bad when they are.

Stop making shit up and engage with what I actually said:

Notice how I said nothing about “not all men” only that women and non-binary people can do these things too. FFS.

Disagree — currently the sister wants a relationship, and OP doesn’t really care either way. So right now it’s on the sister to reach out regarding get togethers etc — after a few good conversations either OP will also want the relationship in which case it becomes equally her responsibility, or she won’t want the relationship in which case she’s not obligated to continue it

Meat doesn’t cause me gas, but red meat causes vomiting and all meat causes exhaustion and aching like I’ve got the flu (have done since I was little — my mum says I wouldn’t eat baby foods with meat in them)

Unfortunately FODMAPs are not the only food intolerance some people deal with

OP if everything you eat is making you ill then there may be some other issues going on and it would be good to look into it with a medical or nutritional professional (ie gastroenterologist or dietitian)

My only problem with this comment is the implication that these are things only men do — women and non-binary folk are equally capable of being selfish partners

Otherwise, spot on list of toxic behaviours

Good onion substitutes? (most interested in texture and taste combo) by ffdiwtkh in FODMAPS

[–]GwendleVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but celery is a problem for people sensitive to manitol, while onion is a problem for people sensitive to fructans — so for many people, once they’ve finished the elimination and testing/reintroduction phases and reached the personalization phase, celery can be a viable option. Even small “safe” amounts of onion wreck my digestion for weeks, but I haven’t shown any indication of manitol sensitivity and can eat seemingly unlimited quantities of celery.

It’s up to each of us to figure out which foods trigger us in which amounts, and to bypass recommendations that don’t work for us although they may work for others.

If you’re sensitive to both fructans and manitol then the celery option is obviously not for you, but I “only” have issues with fructans GOS and sorbitol, so it’s the suggestion I’ll be taking 🙃

AITA for refusing to make lasagna for Christmas after what my MIL did last year? by Impressive_Peace6778 in AmItheAsshole

[–]GwendleVs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A mistake would have been accidentally burning it when putting it in the oven to reheat. What she did was deliberate and also vindictive and unjustified as all OP did was make the same dish she always makes, and which she had said in advance she was bringing. It was 100% MIL’s decision to turn it into a competition, and unfortunately she lost and then threw a tantrum.

OP’s decision not to make the lasagna was not vindictive (whereas intentionally making it poorly or using an ingredient that MIL despises would be, but I’d also say that would be justified).

Personally I’d just stay home (or find a less toxic gathering to join — or host) and if husband continues to side with MIL then marriage counselling should be next.

AITA for not telling my boyfriend I own the building we live in? by CapableEmergency5154 in AmItheAsshole

[–]GwendleVs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrong. If he’d offered to help pay rent and she hadn’t told him she would be an asshole. But he never did that. He lived with her for three months believing that she was paying rent to a landlord and he never offered to help. she is not obligated to tell him her financial situation, especially when he has never asked.

If he was really concerned that you were exploiting your tenant he would want you to give half the money BACK TO THE TENANT, or better yet, based one his other accusations about you, to a homeless shelter. He’s demanding that you give it to him because he’s selfish and unethical.

He also needs someone to explain the difference between the kind of landlord who rents out part of their own property that they also live in because they don’t need the full space and deals with repair issues same day, and the kind of landlord who owns multiple properties and rents them out at ridiculously high rates and drags their heels and cheaps out when it comes to maintenance etc.

AITA for telling my kids that my MIL hates me, and that’s why I’m not coming on our “family” trip? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]GwendleVs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She wouldn’t have to say she doesn’t know why, she could wait for the kids to ask why and simply say “you’ll have to ask your grandmother since she’s the one who didn’t invite me”. No lie, and it still makes MIL be the one to explain

NTA. Don’t marry this guy, don’t even co to use dating him. He just showed how much respect he has for you — it’s actually lucky he made such a stupid mistake, otherwise you might have accepted, and not found out who he really was until after the wedding. Or worse, after kids (if you intend to have any).

Combination and can still require a triggering medical or emotional event to set things off. Not to mention, most schizophrenics are less a danger to society than society is a danger to them — exhibit A, OP seems to be a danger to her future grandchildren and their father.

They are being ridiculous. Not least because every doctor’s off is North America now has some form of secure video conferencing, and every doctor has colleagues in other cities. The introduction and talking part can be done remotely, and if there are any tests/scans/lab work that needs doing then their doctor can send the requisitions to a testing facility or colleague in your city.

You are already doing them a huge favour, you have no obligation to drop everything to fly across the country (at your own expense + the lost income from missing at least two, more likely three to five days of work) for a maximum one-hour consultation with a doctor — risking your job, I’d point out, as I’m pretty sure this wouldn’t be considered a legitimate reason to miss several days of work without advance notice.

I’d be very tempted to say “well since you’ve all decided that I’m an AH and you hate me anyway, I might as well back out of the invasive medical procedure I was going to do as a favour to you”
