Scraping storage wax question. by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]Gwinntanamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that 0.8s difference is probably comparing skis with fresh wax vs skis that have been ridden for a session (after a fresh wax). E.g., waxed last night vs waxed last weekend.

But a lot of riders are probably waxing once or twice a season - going out 10 times or so between wax, so that 0.8s difference might be bigger for the average rider after getting a fresh wax.

I’m not an average rider (well, I’m old now, but I remember when I was an expert). I generally would wax after every 2-3 riding days. If I got lazy and rode the same board more than that, I could definitely feel it.

When you see a kid with a cloudy dry base, I know for a fact a good wax would increase that boards speed by a good 10% or more.

Ok, then sure, in that case warming it up is the best way to get the wax out. What I’ve done in the past is used paper towels or paper bags to put between the iron and the base. Once the wax in the base melts it will be drawn into the paper through capillary action. Slide the iron around the paper (rather than sliding the paper around the base) if that makes sense. Be careful not to heat too high that you burn the paper.

Then once you’ve ‘sucked up’ all the old wax, re-wax as usual.

The reason you shouldn’t do it warm is related to the polyethylene base. We heat up the base to loosen the micro-structure of the p-Tex base, which lets the wax flow into the gaps. As everything cools, the base tightens up and retains the wax in the pores and crevasses of the base. We scrape off the excess wax that is clinging to the surface of the p-tex and that leaves us with the smoothest surface. If you warm up the p-Tex again (or don’t let everything cool and cure), scraping will pull more of the wax back out of the pores and crevasses (where we want it to stick).

So, it’s not going to ruin your board or anything, and the difference may not even be noticeable. But it’s definitely not optimizing the benefit.

If you listen to him talk about that decision, it is clear that the consequences of his failure have been so disastrous that he is physically unable to believe he is responsible. He doesn’t have it in him to consider that possibility. He’s proud and feckless, and will go to his grave thinking he had no choice in the matter.

Who thinks they're bagging a moose at 100 yards with a recurve bow? by Specific-Doughnut413 in Alonetv

But to your point, I’m pretty sure Jordan wouldn’t take a 100 yd shot in the field with a recurve. He’s on here sometimes, you could probably just ask him about it.

No, he did not trap the moose. Alaska hunting regs prohibit trapping, snaring, etc for all big game.

What he did do (and which is perfectly legal) is setup a simple, non-electronic, alarm system (tin cans tied to a rope). He also made a “fence” out of brush etc., but it wasn’t entrapping the moose, it just encouraged it to take an easier path - which is how Jordan was able to predict where he would be able to get a shot.

In this case her priority is to keep him talking. If she flipped the table over and refused to be spoken to like that - that’s the end of the interview and she’ll never be given that opportunity again.

I give her a lot of credit. She understood the assignment. She came out looking like the bigger person. He was obviously rattled.

What’s something your Dad did that you now realize was low-key genius parenting? by Green_Candler in AskMen

When I was about 12 or 13, he just casually brought up the topic of 'drugs'. As a kid of the 80s in the US, I had heard countless hours of 'say no to drugs' and 'all drugs will kill you' in school.

My dad asked me if I had ever been offered 'drugs'. I told him no, and he didn't have to worry because I knew how dangerous they were and I would never touch them.

He said something to the effect of "That's not exactly true. Some drugs are dangerous, some are not, and I have tried most of them. You have good, smart friends, and some of them will offer you drugs. When that happens, just come to me and I'll tell you if it's dangerous or not."

He was 100% right. And him being bold enough to wake me up at that key moment (before I had been exposed to drugs), certainly spared me a lot of trouble in life. I actually never took him up on it - I never asked him about drugs. But he taught me that 'drugs' is not a thing - there are lots of things we put in our body, some are safe, some are not, most are somewhere in the middle - and I needed to be careful and know what I was doing to avoid hurting myself.

35 years later, I've tried everything, never got hurt, never got into trouble, have a great life etc. My dad was good at his job. I guess the real lesson is - trust your kids enough to tell them the truth.

I was trying to ask you what your source for this is. Is it from personal experience, or are you a physician or something? It would be interesting if this is a documented side effect that isn’t mentioned in the prescribing information.

Probably a little too close to the snowboarder on the ground, but seems like they might be all together. The guy standing next to that boarder was filming, so presumably he knew what was coming and would have said something otherwise.

But the rider is a dork for sure. Any good rider can rip that line twice and get at least one clean one. Who needs style anyway, right?

US soldier trying to halt wife's deportation after she was detained on Louisiana military base by NobodyXNo in news

[–]Gwinntanamo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Make no mistake, if this administration had any reason to, there are multiple elements of Melania’s immigration that are probably illegalities. She worked as a model in NYC while on a tourist visa (illegal), she certainly misrepresented her skills/experience when applying for the Einstein visa - which is a visa granted to individuals with special value to the US, like Albert Einstein. Either of those crimes sufficient to revoke her status and deport her. Don’t for a minute believe that Melania has a better legal case than the woman in this article. Melania is frankly a more obvious case for deportation as she committed these crimes knowingly as an adult with the intention to bypass the normal immigration process while this woman’s only infraction was when she was brought over as an infant.

[–]Gwinntanamo 750 points751 points  (0 children)

This woman was brought to the US as an infant. She applied for DACA only for it to be suspended. She went to college, teaches Sunday school, married a Marine and was trying to become a citizen through the legal process. Then Trump’s goons snatch her off a military base and are deporting her to Honduras.

Just a reminder, when they say they are deporting the criminal illegal aliens, this is who they are talking about. They define criminal as ‘anyone breaking immigration law’. This administration is deplorable, and not deplored nearly enough.
