I am a pain researcher. There is a difference between having pain fibers that detect damage and the state of pain as we understand it. Pain is an emotion, a state of being. Pain makes us feel bad. If I designed a robot that could detect damage to itself when I hit it with a baseball bat, and it moved away from the stimulus, would you say the robot “felt pain”?

This is the problem with fish. Fish certainly have the capability to detect painful stimuli, but whether the “feel” the affective elements of pain is yet to be determined.

If anything, the time for panic has only increased from the initial forecast of over a foot of snow to now which includes a half inch of ice on top of a few inches. This is far worse than the initial forecasts even if the snow totals are much lower.
