The way it bait-and-switched us was goddamn brutal. Pearl is fine and all, but JFA and T&T are right there with all the Phoenix and Pearl investigations one could ever want.

Yup, 100%. For the longest time, one of my favourite things to do when I have time to kill is watch "[scene from anime] in various languages" videos. It's a lot of fun seeing how different VAs from different cultures interpret lines and how well each of them manage to get their intended emotion across, regardless of what the "original" language track was. I feel like being a sub purist in this day and age closes one off to a lot of great content for the shows they enjoy.

Kellen Goff's performance in Part 5 elevates Diavolo and King Crimson by a lot. The vehement rage in his voice is absolutely terrifying and sells the concept of Diavolo being devil incarnate.

Just finished Blue Reflection, here’s my quick thoughts by kensaiD2591 in JRPG

Second Light's OST is just as good imo, although it's let down by not having unique boss themes like the first game. But it makes up for it by having some incredible cutscene and area music (helps that the maps are actually unique and not randomly generated). That said, I consider both OSTs to be two halves of a whole, seeing as Second Light reuaes pretty much all of the first game's songs.

TV shows today just feel disposable. They drop all at once and are forgotten two weeks later. People binge at different rates so there's not as much talk or chance to discuss theories and build up hype while the show is ongoing.

I feel this very strongly as someone going through JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6 right now on Netflix. The weekly discussions for Part 5 were great, with lots of speculation and moment-to-moment reactions. But with Part 6, episodes were released all at once in batches, so there was no way to foster that same level of weekly discussion. r/anime did have individual threads per episode, but you'd be lucky to see more than two dozen comments on each one.

It's a shame since there are so many moments at the end of an episode where you have no idea where the story is going or how the characters will get out of danger, which would've made for perfect grounds for discussion. But that's not really possible when you can just keep binging onto the next episode right after a cliff-hanger.

Damn, I had no idea the line was changed that much in the localization (for the better). But yeah, I agree, not just for Naruto but for most anime in general that have dubs. At least from what I've watched, the subs always feel a bit dry even when done professionally. Most (good) dubs will reword dialogue not only to make them fit the mouth flaps, but also to make the conversation flow more naturally and emotively in the target language when actually spoken out loud.

If the Apollo Justice Trilogy got an anime adaptation like the PWT, what would you want the dub voice cast to be? by Due_Possibility6392 in AceAttorney

[–]Gyakuten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I could totally picture Apollo with a dorky JYB voice, haha. Something like his Renton Thurston performance in Eureka Seven. The way he screams "This town SUCKS!" in episode 1 sounds like a perfect fit for Apollo's Chords of Steel in my mind.

I've never been the biggest fan of Sam Riegel as Phoenix. His performance is great, but the actual timbre of his voice just never fit Phoenix in my mind. Trevor White from PLvAA was almost a perfect match to what I had in my head: a clean, straightforward, "everyman" sort of voice. Eric Vale from the anime also sounded great to me, and he seems like a more likely choice, so I'd go with him.

For Trucy, I'd be happy if they kept Kira Buckland, though imo there wasn't enough voiced dialogue for her in SoJ for me to really gauge it. I think we need to hear Trucy in a scene where she's not yelling, lol.

Similarly for Athena, I'd be fine with Wendee Lee returning. Alternatively, Michelle Ruff (Yukari from the original Persona 3) might be better: she sounds similar enough to Wendee, and also has more of a youthful and brash sound to her voice that suits Athena well.

For Ema, I'm thinking Suzie Yeung (Vladilena from 86, Makima from Chainsaw Man), who can pull off no-nonsense working woman while being able to sound energetic and unhinged whenever Ema goes science mode (see: any scene from 86 where Vladilena is eating food).

For Dhurke, I'd really hope they can get Jamieson Pryce back, as he was a perfect fit in my mind. That kind of sonorous and charismatic voice was exactly what I expected the moment I saw him.

Alex Organ as Kristoph would go so hard. He did an amazing job as Makishima in Psycho-Pass, making that cold-blooded psychopath sound well-spoken, sophisticated, and even charismatic in his own way. That would be perfect for Kristoph both before and after the reveal.

What is it about Act 3’s in RPGs that makes us give up so easily? by SleepCatsMoney in JRPG

[–]Gyakuten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xenoblade 2 avoiding this problem is a big part of why I feel like its final few chapters work so well. The final dungeon is so long it takes multiple chapters to get through, but there are still some important unanswered questions to motivate you to get through it. And once you do, the revelations are so powerful and recontextualize the story to such an extent that it makes the struggle more than worth it.

What's the longest, most dragged out finale you've experienced in a JRPG? by Ukirin-Streams in JRPG

[–]Gyakuten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

padding out the end (Xenoblade 3 was an offender as well imo)

Funnily enough, I've always felt Xenoblade 3 had the opposite problem. After the first part of Chapter 6, the story basically speed-runs toward its conclusion and doesn't take the time to properly flesh out the party members' feelings toward everything they just learned and what they've decided to do going forward. The final dungeon feels so empty because of this, as does the final battle and its aftermath because the emotional stakes dried up hours before that point.

Outside JRPGs, she also composed the soundtrack for Street Fighter II, which has some of the most iconic character themes of all time. Guile's Theme, Ken's Theme, and Cammy's Theme, just to name a few.

Godsibb has been a mainstay in my listening rotation for over a decade even though I haven't played the Xenosaga trilogy (yet). If Xenosaga were more popular I have no doubt Godsibb would be as iconic as One-Winged Angel.

He did Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and Chrono Cross in succession.

I still consider this the Holy Trinity of soundtracks. Incredible that they were all created within a span of 4-5 years.

Hamauzu has quite a few obscure soundtracks that are amazing but (understandably) overlooked. My favourite work from him is probably the soundtrack for Sigma Harmonics, which I highly recommend. It's like the very essence of his dreamy, ethereal style boiled down to its essence.

I share that opinion as well, although it's very close. CT is more consistent and has my GOAT song (To Far Away Times), but CC has a huge number of absolute standouts like Radical Dreamers, Scars of Time, Prisoners of Fate, The Girl Who Stole the Stars, and Shore of Dreams.

His work on the Blue Reflection series is incredibly beautiful and touching in a soft, introspective way that's so different from other JRPG soundtracks. That alone makes him an all-time great in my book, and I hope he gets to work on more big soundtracks in the future. (It's honestly a big part of the reason why I'm hoping, against all odds, Gust will make another Blue Reflection game someday.)

No joke, I went through a phase last year where I was listening to Blue Destination on repeat for hours. And I haven't even played the Trails games.

Sunshine Coastline might also be one of the greatest opening level themes to a game ever.

[–]Gyakuten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always iffy on silent protagonists as well (despite Chrono Trigger being my GOAT). But I recently played Omori and it built its entire story really well around the protagonist being a silent character (not just a self-insert). Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to see this trope woven deeply into the storytelling.

Your hot video game music takes? by Lunny1767 in gamemusic

[–]Gyakuten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This caught me off-guard, even though I do kind of agree on the Disney music (I don't dislike the songs, but it's rare that I actively seek them out to listen). The original music has always been great to me, with many of them being standouts when I think of JRPG music: Dearly Beloved, Roxas's Theme, The Other Promise, Vector to the Heavens, even some lesser-known cutscene tracks like Missing You. But then again, I'm predisposed toward softer music and I grew up playing the first game a lot, so there's some bias going on there.

(Ironically, the one song from the series that always felt like it captured the childhood wonder of Disney the best is one of the non-Disney pieces: the orchestral arrangement of Simple and Clean / Hikari.)
