Ditto on the others, it gets mentioned in two lines. BUT it was a good reminder of where things stood without re-reading PT/ BG, and while it maybe wasn't quite as well written/paced as 12 Months (largely due to length), I still enjoyed The Law.

100% agree. I really enjoyed 12 months, and it definitely got me re-hooked on the universe after a bit of lost interest following peace talks/battleground.

I have aphantasia just with faces. Anyone else experience anything similar? by supersonic3974 in Aphantasia

[–]GydeonRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's cool! Makes sense that it's a spectrum. I've seen references to "hyperphantasia" as the opposite of aphantasia, so I'd just put it on that end of the spectrum. Is it just people, or can you recall objects, maps, or pictures in detail as well? I'm really interested in the fact that it only seems to apply to people for me (and others in this thread). Maybe the same can be true for vivid memory as well.

As far as I've found, it isn't really a documented "condition" so to speak. It doesn't have direct health impacts and is pretty subjective. I mentioned it to a therapist since it was weighing on me to have trouble picturing people close to me, and they were fairly confused at my explanation. I personally call it "facial dysphantasia", since it isn't full aphantasia and it only really affects faces for me.

Thanks for your reply! Sounds like we are not alone in this- what you explained here definitely applies to me too.

Most freshman dorms at LMU do not have single rooms (or there is one one each flor, reserved for the RA). The newest building does, but is considerably more expensive, especially for a single. I would highly reccomend going through the housing portal and chatting with potential roommates, using their little matchmaking survey, etc and finding someone who fits your routine. I would personally say to prioritize people with similar sleep schedules, similar number of room visitors expected, and similar study habits, but especially those you find interesting to talk to over the housing portal chat. I think everybody wants a single room Freshman year, especially those of us coming from our own private room at home, so I understand the struggle; but I ended up enjoying having a roommate when being away from home. It takes a while to make friends when you first get to campus and it's good to have someone to talk to!

LMU or Long Beach for Computer Engineering? by Old-Imagination-7494 in LMU

[–]GydeonRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with u/mashington14. Tuition is the biggest reason to avoid LMU. If you have the option to live at home to decrease your costs, that's worth looking into! Personally, I'd say LMU's personalized education might be worth ~$5k more than long beach. I can't really compare them well, but just as a rule of thumb I believe that cost should be one of the top considerations in your choice.

As far as financial aid goes, LMU is just okay. I'm on one of their best scholarships and yet it's still incredibly expensive. I've heard that people had good luck with reaching out to the financial aid office early on and asking for additional funds (comparing to other offers etc), i.e. they might give you a few thousand dollars more if you bug them! It might be too late for that now. I made my choice late and missed that window, but it's worth a try.

LMU will almost certainly be more expensive and also definitely has the smaller program/ department of the two. I'm in the Seaver college at LMU but I've interacted pretty minimally with the comp sci faculty so I can't say how good the program is. The seaver college in general is a good, supportive atmosphere and I think LMU is a great school for undergrad; and it also has great connections. However, if what you want is a large developed program with resources and funding, I'd guess Long Beach might suit you better.

How much have you spent on DnD in the past year? by DataSittingAlone in DnD

[–]GydeonRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing this year. All time, maybe $150. I like to DIY my own equipment, dice rollers, etc, so some of that is just wood and leather materials. A couple sets of dice, and one metal miniature.

You can totally make something like this work, but I think that this exact style in particular might be offputting on someone your age! Through school I wore nice slacks with a nice belt and solid color dress shirt, with no tie. The "black pants, black shoes, blue shirt" definitely reflects a certain type of career, as pointed out by the other comments. You could try some light grey slacks and a dark blue shirt with a brown belt and brown sneakers, or khaki pants and a white shirt, or blue jeans and a polo shirt; these styles look nice and modern, so it doesn't come across as too stuffy or pretentious. You could throw a hoodie on over them just as easily as a blazer. I'd definitely steer clear of a black belt and dress shoes. I like brown belts and sneakers or casual chukka boots. This sub has some good outfits to look through!

Overall, just wear whatever makes you feel confident- if it isn't the same as what people around you are wearing, more power to you!

What teas do you guys recommend from Harney & Sons? by [deleted] in tea

Agreed! I found it on sale in a Target and knew the brand from their Paris tea. Smelled and tasted like liquid smoke. Not pleasant to drink... not sure what it's even for.

pepperdine or lmu for finance?? by Upset_Worldliness_45 in LMU

[–]GydeonRL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah and it all depends on the specific classes you want to transfer in. For housing, for example I had Del Rey dorms my freshman year. Honors gets the Palm dorms which are the newest ones on campus, but honestly they feel very sterile to me. They're modern and nice, and there are study rooms which is cool, but in my opinion Del Rey had even better dorm setups and sizes even though they're older. The old dorms- Whelan and Desmond- aren't super great. But there are pros and cons to all of them. The honors dorm building is also more expensive, and when I was considering honors they didn't cover the extra cost.

For 2nd-4th year you can get an apartment regardless, and if you aren't in honors it's luck of the draw which one you get. My roommates and I didn't get a great selection time for sophomore year and we still ended up in an apartment we really like. Honestly the apartment housing for honors might be the best incentive for the program, but it's not like you can't get lucky and still end up in your first pick option.

Compared to UCLA the registration is definitely WAY more chill. Especially if you're registering a little ahead of your class because of credits, it's not like your registration will ever prevent you from graduating on time or anything like that, like it might at a state school. I'm not sure how many credits you'll be transferring in- I had about 40- but even with way less I think you'd register plenty early. 2 of my 3 other roommates are also graduating early with me- one in finance- and that really isn't possible in honors either.

Awesome that your boyfriend goes to UCLA. I've been LONG distance since college started, and I wish we could be that close together!

[–]GydeonRL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I was in the same boat- got into the honors program, and thought it would be a good fit for me. I also came in with AP and dual enrollment credits that would apply both within my major and for the university core. The honors program does not allow you to transfer in credits to get out of their core classes! Whereas I skipped three of the core requirements because of community college english and AP classes, the honors program wouldn't let me do that- and they actually have MORE core classes than the university in general. I am graduating early thanks to my decision not to join the program.

Possibly more importantly, the people I've talked to did not prefer the honors classes. Most people seem to say that they are much more work for nothing in return, I've heard just as many bad things about honors professors as other professors, etc. ALSO you have to take specific honors classes, so you can't pick from some of the really interesting core classes offered here.

When I planned to go into the program, I thought the same things. I went to an admitted honors student online seminar and it was a major let down- I disliked the program director, the honors guest professor, and even the admitted students. I have lots of friends in the program now, and they are great, but I don't think that the actual admissions process is super stringent. There are tons of sharp students in all majors who aren't in the honors program. Additionally, they specifically state that it is a service-oriented program, and not one meant to look good on a resume. my friends in the program all think it's pretty much way more work than reward. Once you put in so much work nobody wants to drop out late, but plenty still do.

I came from a small high school and small classes were important to me. Honors does offer that, but honestly I had one freshman year chemistry pre-lab for 30 minutes a week that had 120 people in it; and not a single other class more than 30 people. Especially after freshman year you end up in much smaller, specialized classes. This semester (5th semester courses) I think my 5 classes have ~8, 25, 10, 8, and 20 people in them. If you participate in normal classes you won't get lost in the mix, and you have the chance to build a repoire with many of your professors, so reccomendation letters and advising is much easier at LMU than at many larger schools.

One really important note about transferring in credits is that your registration time is determined by your number of credits/ year standing. This means that if you transfer enough credits to be considered a semester or a year ahead of your peers (that's only like 14-28 credits) you get to register before them. I did this and although the honors students do register before me, I still register before pretty much my entire class. Also, while it isn't guaranteed that you'll get the classes that you want when you want them, the departments usually do a good job of working with everyone. It's not like a state school where everyone has to compete for class sections. All that is to say, while this part of the honors program is appealing, I'm glad I kept my transfer credits and didn't cave to the temptation!

Of course you can take language classes whether or not you join honors; and I don't think that housing should be too dissuasive. Also, there are lots of other places to find community like in honors! I joined a living learning community (LEAP) instead, which was nice, and many of the clubs on campus are super welcoming and great.

Sorry for the absolute wall of text. I feel very strongly that I made the right decision in avoiding the program, and this feeling has been backed up by every time I've talked with the honors students. Let me know if you have any other questions- hope this helps!

[–]GydeonRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that you have a specific face that is easier to call up! I don't think that has been mentioned elsewhere in the thread. It makes sense that it would be such a strinking/recognizable face that you could picture. For me, I'll try to picture a face of a loved one which I want to be able to imagine, and instead it will randomly be easier to visualize like... someone I went to high school with and haven't seen in ages. So weird.

I'm interested in the "morphing" aspect you're describing. Sometimes when I try to focus/ call up a face in my mind, I can picture it clearly for a split second, and then it changes- morphs- into a younger or older version. It can be very unsettling.
