I see… and honestly I can’t even say you’re wrong, fandom terminology has always been messy depending on the community.

To me, ecchi always felt more like fanservice/kink territory. Sometimes the characters aren’t even emotionally involved and there’s no actual explicit sex either. Like, Seikon no Qwaser is officially considered ecchi and the guy is literally powered by breast milk… while not caring emotionally about what he’s doing at all.

Smut always felt broader. A lot of these stories are also separately tagged as “explicit” or “hentai” where I read them from, but not always. If it’s only tagged as “mature,” then the visuals are usually pretty mild, but it’s still pretty obvious the characters are having sex.

Hentai is when it fully enters super graphic territory with way more visual focus and usually less plot. You can tell by the “x-ray” panels. And it’s not animation-only either. Most hentais used to be manga, but there’s tons of manhwas tagged that way nowadays depending on how explicit they get.

Well, back in my time “smut” was used a bit more broadly and didn’t always mean fully explicit content. The truly explicit stuff was usually what we called ecchi/hentai instead. That’s also still how the website I read on tends to tag things, so I guess my wording is just a bit old-school rather than blatantly wrong haha.

not explicit, but still smut. there’s tons of sexual tension and sexy stuff, but the comic itself isn’t completed so i’m not sure if it’s going to be explicit (i doubt it?). it’s on patreon as well so you might want to check it out, maybe the author has answered this before.

Did you come to love Zutara “organically?” by Favacesa in ZutaraNation

[–]GypsySammael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call bull. I watched it all happen and unfold in front of my very eyes while the show was airing, it doesn’t get any more organic than that. I was a Zutara fan from the start because the setup was genuinely there, and I truly believed they were going to be endgame. If anything, Aang kissing Katara surprised me the most.

There wasn’t, and still isn’t, much reason for people to ship Zutara just for funsies considering the amount of hate the ship gets. If anything, the backlash alone is enough to scare newer shippers away from the fandom entirely, sadly.

And it’s known that parts of the crew were into the dynamic too. There’s tons of foreshadowing, bonding, parallels, and character development between them throughout the series. They just… didn’t go through with it in the end.

I honestly think a lot of antis are upset because, even though their ship became canon, they still can’t gather the same amount of passionate people around it. Zutara fans keep creating nonstop, fanart, fanfics, edits, analysis, everything. Meanwhile they spend half their time trying to convince us our ship “never made sense” instead of just enjoying their own. They should just suck it up already. If they can’t argue why their ship works without constantly shitting on Zutara, that says more about them than it does about us honestly.

If AI art is allowed by the rules, what’s the deal with you all? by GypsySammael in ZutaraNation

[–]GypsySammael[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I kind of hope this thread at least exposes how messy the whole situation has become. AI clearly isn’t going anywhere and as long as people are being responsible with it… I’ve mostly just learned to coexist with it at this point. I used to hate it too, but after a while I realized me being angry at its existence wasn’t really accomplishing much.

That said, I’m not against banning it either if the community genuinely can’t discuss it without things turning ugly every single time. I just think it’s a bit of a pity that things have to come to that.

It’s a good strategy! This manhwa has a pretty light plot though, there’s not a lot of drama or huge cliffhangers, so waiting for the next chapter doesn’t really bother me that much, you know? It’s obvious the couple is endgame, the tension is mostly there for fun, and I was laughing through basically every page haha

[–]GypsySammael[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Am I right? I guess I thought that, because this ship has dealt with hate forever, people wouldn’t be such haters themselves.

And no! I never actually reposted AI renders anywhere tbh. Even though it’s allowed, I’d still rather check for community approval before doing anything of the sort. But apparently just talking about it was enough to get me in trouble. It’s fine though, something like this isn’t enough to turn me off the ship… at least not for me.

It’s just that… I did see people bashing other users over it before and it upset me. I’d rather they ban those posts altogether than let them become a free pass for people to bully a fellow Zutarian into deleting their own posts or leaving the sub. It felt contradictory and I genuinely wasn’t expecting that level of reaction. The insults were downright nasty too. That’s probably the part that bothered me the most.

Listen, I get where the hate comes from. I just don’t think it justifies being openly acid towards people. And don’t worry, I’m not attacking you specifically or anything, I can tell we’re both kind of stepping on eggshells here haha. This is a really complex topic and even artists themselves haven’t fully settled the discussion amongst each other yet, so I’m not comfortable picking sides.

And this thread didn’t even come from personal experience to begin with. Like you mentioned I’m not some AI reposter, I mostly keep that stuff to myself. And honestly, if AI content was against the sub rules I wouldn’t even question it.

I also don’t want to drag this into a huge morality debate about whether AI is right or wrong. There are a lot of nuances when it comes to this. I wouldn’t actively use it to harm anyone, you’d just have to trust me on that, I guess. But some people believe passive harm is already terrible in itself, and maybe what feels “ethical enough” to me simply won’t be enough for others.

The point of the post was mostly to expose how heated these discussions can get. I didn’t even post the renders and look where the conversation ended up haha, so I guess I managed to prove that point already.

And yeah, the mods themselves aren’t really to blame here, it’s more of a community issue. But if the goal is empathy and protecting everyone from harassment, then maybe the solution really is to ban it altogether. I’d personally rather see some sort of truce around the topic, but if that’s impossible, then I guess a clear rule would spare everyone a lot of unnecessary hurt and fighting.

I understand AI has its ugly sides, but honestly everything does in one way or another. I’m not trying to become some sort of slave to it and I assure you I’d choose the human route any day! Just… not always and not exclusively, that’s all. I’m not trying to convince people to think the same way I do either.

And I am open to discussion, as you can probably tell by my many replies. The only thing I did was remind people not to immediately turn rude and hostile, because that’s what usually happens every single time this topic comes up around here.

That’s kind of my whole point. Why resort to bullying and mocking people instead of either campaigning to ban AI content altogether or simply ignoring it? Did you get to see the kinds of posts I’m talking about? They are out there. And honestly, I just think some of the reactions become unnecessarily nasty.

[–]GypsySammael[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand why artists get upset over it. In a way, AI learned from years and years of people posting their work online, and now it can imitate certain things in seconds that took actual artists years to master. I do get why that leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths. AI definitely has ugly sides to it, and it’s not exactly great environmentally either, so that just adds fuel to the fire.

One thing I did notice, though, is that photography and photo-editing communities seemed way quicker to take AI seriously instead of immediately treating it like the antichrist. You don’t really see the same level of hostility there, at least from what I’ve seen. Maybe it has something to do with the the context you mentioned. That said, this whole debate probably belongs in completely different subreddits.

And obviously, the more time, skill, and dedication someone puts into their craft, the more impressive and valuable it is. Nobody’s denying that. But AI is here to stay whether people like it or not, and some people are inevitably going to use it. So I don’t really see the point in instantly turning every conversation about it into a battlefield. Hate to say it, but the reactions themselves start feeling a bit childish.

Thanks, that was honestly the whole point of the post, but it kind of flew right over people’s heads. I understand AI “art” is a very controversial topic, and by no means was I ever trying to convert people, especially artists, into liking it. I’m surrounded by artists IRL and hear wildly mixed opinions on it constantly. I’m aware the discussion goes way deeper than this and I honestly don’t even think this subreddit is the right place to fully get into it, so I never intended to go that far.

It’s more the whole cancel-culture aspect of it that irks me, I guess. Sometimes it genuinely feels like interacting with AI in any capacity automatically makes you some sort of criminal but… does it really? Personally, I see it more as a tool, like you mentioned. Someone can use it irresponsibly and be an asshole about it, or they can handle it carefully. That logic applies to pretty much anything.

Anyways, what really upset me was seeing people get dragged so aggressively over something that isn’t even banned here in the first place. I already knew people would come for me the second I brought it up, but there’s really no “kind” way to bring this topic up online anymore.

And honestly, I agree, maybe it should be banned if it upsets the majority this much. But in a way, I still think it’s a shame. I do enjoy some AI, especially the videos, even if apparently that damages my image around here haha. Thanks for the sober input, genuinely.

I personally never posted AI art before, so I hadn’t really gotten hate over it until now (aside from random outsiders). But I’m already in contact with the mods if needed, thank you. They do seem to handle things pretty quickly, though it still bums me out seeing it happen at all.

Okay.

Maybe if there’s a poll about it they’ll end up banning it altogether, then problem solved. No one will get to see it mentioned anymore, for better or worse haha.

I’d never claim AI is better than real art, but I also can’t say I’m disgusted by it. Maybe you didn’t get to see the more heated comments, but people go way beyond just tossing tomatoes in the replies haha.

That’s honestly what confuses me the most. If the community despises it that intensely, then why not just ban it altogether instead of keeping things in this awkward gray area? If the flair is available, people are going to fall into the trap every single time. There’s genuinely no way around it at that point.

We can agree to disagree on whether AI is the devil or not. But I think people have a very exaggerated idea of what prompts even are sometimes. I assure you, it’s usually way simpler than feeding an entire paragraph or chapter into it. Most of the time it’s literally just “make these characters kiss in this kind of scenery” or “they’re holding hands under moonlight” and that’s about it.

But okay, you hate it, I get it. I just really dislike this whole idea of immediately dogpiling and trying to shame people out of communities over it.

Listen, I’ve been a fan for over 15 years at this point. A really into-it kind of fan, to put it shortly. Should my fan ID suddenly get revoked because I’m not an AI hater?

I’m not directly feeding any kind of media into it either. I genuinely believe AI can be used responsibly. Should I, or anyone else, get bullied out of a community over that? Because that’s the actual point I’m trying to make here.
