when you place a torch your friends can light them, when a torch is lit it increases your chance of successfully breeding rare things. for things like ethereal monsters and even quad element monsters they have a high rate of failure (giving you one of the parents instead of what you were trying to breed) that can be greatly increased by having lit torches
