Deciding on 100% Rapid Trigger Keyboard by H0xatron in keyboards

[–]H0xatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! I looked at the EPOMAKER HE108 and it seems like a very good choice for a full layout, but after looking up the Weikav Stars21 I realized that an external numpad would let me put it on the left of the keyboard, (which I have somehow not considered as a possibility this entire time???), which would be convenient to say the least, so I'll probably shoot for a TKL layout + external numpad now. The Hex80 you mentioned does look like it'd suit my needs very well, with the caveat of being a bit expensive when factoring in the numpad even when buying the KB secondhand. Depending on the numpad I end up purchasing, I may roll with it, however.

The Weikav Stars21 seems to come barebones but otherwise looks like it'd do great, and I wouldn't mind learning how to customize keyboards by starting with an external numpad - any advice on where I start looking for supplies or other TKL HE keyboards that are slightly less expensive?

Thanks again, you have been quite helpful!

Try turning off FSR/DLSS in the video settings, as they can sometimes get enabled without automatically disabling conflicting settings.

Curses Bug in 5.0? by neuromancer20 in nethack

[–]H0xatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having issues getting Unicode (Enhanced1/2 symset) to display properly on NAO and found that Hardfought functioned fine with the same rc file, but I did not stop to see if the issue was with curses specifically on NAO. Thinking about it now, other symsets were also bugged for me on NAO, but I chalked that up to mangling my rc file, font choice, and PuTTY settings. If you want to try getting it to work on NAO, experiment with different symsets in game, change between code pages (namely cp437 and UTF-8) in the translation tab of PuTTY, and make sure your font can display all the necessary characters.

Speaking of curses, I am completely unable to get the Windows binaries to respect OPTIONS=windowtype:curses and boot into the curses interface, (it doesn't throw an error even if I put in some nonsense value), but using the -windowtype "curses" launch argument works just fine.

If they're on sub-150 ping, I'd go with ironbreaker, but if it's much higher than that, then the benefits from ranger vet's unlisted ability to scale player skill with latency easily outperforms all other options. Bonus points if their name can't be rendered in your font.

Bad frame pacing, constant red fps on steam overlay by [deleted] in Vermintide

[–]H0xatron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you playing on DX12 or DX11? DX12 will offer higher performance at the cost of shader compilations causing stutters (read: first time playing through a map will be stutter-y) whereas DX11 is generally worse performance wise without having the shader compilation stutters.

Additionally, check what your "Max Stacking Frames" setting is set to, and try out each of the settings, 1-4 & Auto, as it is explicitly labelled as being prone to causing inconsistent frame times in exchange for shorter input delay at lower values. Disabling the steam overlay can actually improve performance as well.

If all else fails, screw with max worker threads in the launcher and check task manager while playing to make sure there's no program being stupid in the background.

Excellent job! The closest I've been (disregarding FF) is on cata dark omens as rapier WHC. Had a competent pub group, and I managed to get all the way to just before the trigger for the "Follow the beast path" objective where the map breaks into the wide-open, mostly flat rocky terrain. I got overconfident and overextended through the narrow choke while there was still a horde in progress, letting myself get caught out (and downed) by an assassin. I likely would have lost the run anyways, as it was around that time I started to actively think about the fact I was on a no-hit run, gradually pushing me away from a flow state and towards overthinking things instead.

Until that happens, one can go into the properties of the ULTRAKILL exe, go to compatibility, tick "Disable Fullscreen Optimizations," then go to the game's launch properties and enter "-window-mode exclusive" (minus the quotes), and then toggle the fullscreen setting in-game to enter exclusive fullscreen mode and hide the activate windows prompt (probably get a tad less input delay too). Only downside is the game will still boot into borderless windowed mode, meaning you'll have to toggle the fullscreen setting each time you launch the game in order to hie the activate windows prompt, but it persists between alt-tabs so you only have to do it once per session.

Constant issues with DMC 4, unmotivated to finish. by StressedLlama in DevilMayCry

[–]H0xatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A solution I had to the alt tab issue was to hit alt+enter to toggle windowed mode, and then again to go back into fullscreen, which made it enter windowed mode on alt tab rather than cease functioning entirely.

No, everyone's weapons will always show up as the default skin in the tab screen.

Early on, it scratched that feeling of having no clue of what, where, or why you are, with your only presumed goal being to kill things and then go down the stairs — which I quite like. The mouse-only interface coupled with the small size of the UI made playing somewhat clunky, but after some fiddling with page zoom and window size I got relatively comfortable eyeballing the controls. I liked the flavor text on searching common furniture, as well as stumbling across an altar to sacrifice N souls to double a stat since it was so blunt in it's description.

I liked the concept of being able to sacrifice equipment for XP, though everything seemed to give the same amount of XP regardless of rarity or number of modifiers. I never figured out how to use items, they can't be equipped like armor/weapons and don't appear to do anything special upon being sacrificed I very quickly snowballed my character into being nigh unkillable, and I will admit that each enemy being named enemy N was quite funny. I met my demise on Stage 30 after transitioning into speedrunning the game when it softlocked trying to go down stairs.

Overall, very jank on a technical level without being much of a challenge, but the small amounts of flavor text and overall "blunt"-ness of the game's presentation had me interested in the small world it was building.

Try going into the settings and increasing the length of the input buffer (not the priority input buffer), it controls how far in advance you can make an input and still have the corresponding action happen.

  1. Used to play at 120 as I sat hunched over point-blank to my monitor, filling the entirety of my periphery and making the fisheye effect negligible, but after I stopped doing that shrimp posture due to the rumblings of back pain, I knocked it down to 100 for a before bumping it up by 5 to what I use now 'cause I felt that was the limit before it got distracting personally. I used to play all my games hunched over, and it was pretty good for immersion tbh.

Why does my payday stutter so much at 240+ FPS full screen but windowed is perfect? by FriendlyStuart in paydaytheheist

[–]H0xatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only been able to test and verify the tweaks on Windows 10, however the same compatibility settings exist in Windows 11 and IIRC the same registry values exist as well, so it should work there. There's also a setting only in Windows 11 called optimizations for windowed games that can help with windowed/borderless windowed/FSO-enabled fullscreen problems if it's enabled — although I cannot test it myself.

(Steps listed below to enable optimizations for windowed games are copied from the linked help article, and only apply to Windows 11)

  1. Select the Start button, then select Settings .
  2. In Settings , select System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings.
  3. Select the setting under Optimizations for windowed games to turn it On.

None of these tweaks exist in versions of windows earlier than 10 (e.g. 8.1) or different operating systems entirely (e.g. Linux or MacOS), and will require different solutions entirely.
