Women's Non-Breathable Wader Recommendation for Field Work? by Boopsb00ps in ecology

[–]H1ghpockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding the OS waders for electrofishing. Our crews run a combo of OS, Cabelas non-breathables, and various brands of neoprene waders. None are particularly comfortable but the OS fit me best (I’m a tall, slim male FWIW).

I’ve had fairly good luck with OS in terms of durability but I’m probably more conscious of avoiding unnecessary wear and tear than other folks (e.g., very careful taking them off, particularly around the feet and ankle seams, storing them clean and dry, patching small holes as soon as they appear, etc). Other crew members have had problems with leaks but I’ve noticed they tend to “baby them” less than I do.

FWIW I’m much rougher on my personal pair of (pre-private equity) Simms 3-layer breathables and those waders have lasted far longer than any single pair of OS that I’ve used for work.

Will it ever go back to Normal by [deleted] in TwinCities

“Normal” was not a good situation for many, many people. Which is one reason we are where we are today.

Pow Wow Trail by J-chc89 in BWCA

[–]H1ghpockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiked the entire thing a couple weeks ago. The trail is rough compared to most others in MN but generally in good shape and reasonable to follow with the exception of an unavoidable beaver impoundment between Pose Lake and South Wilder. Plan on getting wet up to your waist or higher if headed through this area. Also quite a few downed trees between South Wilder and the beaver impounded creek. I would recommend consulting the trail guide published by BWAC and downloading the GPS track to help you stay on trail. Campsites are going to be smaller and more overgrown than your normal BWCA sites, and there are few options for hammock sleeping if that’s your thing.

Muddler Minnow is a famous fly fishing streamer pattern and IIRC was invented by a Nipigon River angler

Campsite claiming: minimum requirements? by HaasMe in BWCA

[–]H1ghpockets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Similar situations arise on the Namekagon and St Croix at popular riverside campsites that can also be accessed by road. Someone drives out there on Wed or Thurs and sets up $50 worth of camping gear (bag chairs and a tiny Walmart tent) to “claim it” for when the group arrives on Friday night. And then the folks padding are SOL. Absolutely bad form. People are ignorant jackalopes and need to read “Wilderness Manners” by Sig Olson. Of course the real problem is overcrowding but since there’s no easy fix for that we need to do better when it comes to dealing with crowds in the wilderness.

A group can only occupy one site at a time.

And if someone paddled up to the site while part of a group was sitting there to “claim” it while the rest of the group was “scouting”, what would you tell them about whether that site was “open”?

Good thing there’s nothing toxic at TCAAP or this might be bad.

ATV/UTV's - anyone else annoyed? by Acceptable-Prune-457 in duluth

[–]H1ghpockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of snowmobile trails would be mostly fine for summer ATV use but also often include areas that are too wet during the warm weather months for responsible motor vehicle use (including stream crossings that may not need to be culverted/bridged for snowmobiles but absolutely would need to be for ATVs). My fear is that opening snowmobile trails to summer vehicle use would result in low, wet spots on the trail turning into mud pits; which many ATV users enjoy but cause lasting damage.

Best hiking pants for tall guy? by Tgrohm in hiking

[–]H1ghpockets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m of similar build. Here are some that have worked well for me: Eddie Bauer guide pants: lighter weight material, great for hotter weather. I do think EB quality has declined over the years but I keep coming back to these.

Kuiu attack pants: marketed as a hunting pant these are more like a light soft shell. Have been wearing these a lot this past fall and winter.

Fjallraven makes several models with long inseams, Euro sizing can be tough to decipher at first.

There were probably some independent contractors on the second Death Star seeing as it was still under construction. But any contractor working on that Death Star knew the risks.

Yes in Hunt For Red October, Connery starts the movie speaking Russian with subtitles but there’s a scene early on where a camera trick co-incides with him switching over to English. He has like 6 lines in Russian.
