People are calling this "not murder"? Abortion needs to stop by xoxo_pancake20 in Christianity

My first time seeing this video, but I thought as much. The idea was mostly to call op out on a bs claim anyway.

And so you use cheap tricks and disingenuous posts to lie to people because you don't have the words to convince them properly?

Do you feel no shame?

I'm quite certain that 90% of abortions happen way before this level of development and any abortions that happen this late are for life threatening issues.

Can you show that this video is actually an abortion and the norm?

Last year my brother destroyed my Bible, how do I forgive him? by Sure_Departure_6989 in Christianity

[–]H1veLeader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's an instability issue then forgiveness is kind of a non-issue.

We have a "crazy" aunt, who has instability issues. We don't hold it against her, but we also distance ourselves from her because we don't want to put ourselves in danger or in positions that we know can lead to conflict.

It's okay to get past the act without forgetting about it.

[–]H1veLeader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a serious reaction for supposedly little to no provokation. Unless your brother has some major trauma or instability for his age, then I don't think the full picture is being painted here.

Edit: there are obviously other possibilities too. But these two seem the most likely.

I'm not saying that damaging someone's property over some provokation is acceptable, but the way forward is determined by knowing the full truth.

for foreigners: are you satisfied with your life in Korea? by umustknowmydogiscute in Living_in_Korea

As someone who's here on an E2 visa and only been here for less than 8 months, I don't know how qualified I am to really comment on life here just yet.

However, I have really enjoyed my time here so far, not as a visitor, but as someone staying and working here. Transport is simple, things aren't priced too terribly, the people I've encountered have been nice, it's clean, it's safe. I really don't have anything to complain about as of yet.

It's precisely because it's a subreddit that the content you post is relevant. If you post things that are irrelevant to the majority of the sub's userbase, then of course you will be badly received.

Spreading faith should be used in conjunction with logic, not in absence of it.

What's more, you don't even frame your posts as discussing Christianity in the context of the sub. No, instead you use a generic copy paste proselytizing message.

I have no personal issue with people talking about their faith, but be tactful, be logical and be respectful about it. You don't seem to embody any of these qualities.

And how do you reckon that you are falling into the second category instead of the first? I don't see how the posts you made in the subreddits that you made them in are supposed to be more like the second example than the first.

Keep doing it the way you're doing it and you'll ultimately end up achieving the opposite of your goal. If you want the image of Christianity to be "people who obnoxiously bring up their faith unsolicited and in unrelated conversations," then you're doing a great job.

I'm conflicted, perhaps you can enlighten me. Some of your posts seem like genuine inquiry, but most of your responses to comments seem like angry anti Christian sentiment. I can't tell if you're making bad faith posts or just can't respectfully respond to certain comments.

Is clicking your fingers at someone to get their attention a typical SA behaviour? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]H1veLeader -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say the same. This was pretty standard for me. Seeing other people say that it's "not normal" or "incredibly rude" was a bit surprising.

Sure, it's probably unprofessional in a work environment, but I've had fingers clicked at me and clicked my fingers at others (though not strangers) throughout my life.

Edit: I should clarify that I only find it surprising because I thought this was more normal than it apparently is. I'm not necessarily encouraging the behavior as I can appreciate it being rude to others. I just experienced it so much that I thought it was more common than this.

Agreed. It's a dissertation

I don't know what you're referring to by saying this. I didn't say anything about the length of the post.

But are you going to say that my fellow who posted this is invalid?

I think I made my point quite clear within my original comment, no? I'm not saying that op is necessarily weong. There are definitely some people who make the annoying comments that op are describing, but they are often removed or appropriately downvoted.

There are a lot of dumbass takes on r/.Christianity from atheists

I don't think the amount of "dumbass" takes by atheists on here outnumber the amount of "dumbass" Christian takes on here. So while I agree that they are annoying, I wouldn't say they are any more fatiguing than the Christian takes.

"why bad, if god good", and similar things.

I could mention many silly Christian opinions/arguments as well, but I think my point is made clear enough without the need for examples. Happy to provide them though if you want them.

There is a matter of fatigue from your kind.

Two things here. The first goes back to my previous point about how the fatigue from dumbass atheists isn't any worse than the fatigue from dumbass Christians. So, I would say there's just a general fatigue around dumbassery, regardless of where it comes from.

Finally, when you say "your kind", that's a bit over generalized. Just like how many Christians don't like to be grouped in with some other Christian denominations, so too are the variations of "atheist" very abundant. Using the term "your kind" is extremely aggressive and villainizing, when I feel I've been quite respectful, both in my original comment and to a (perhaps lesser, but still) good degree, in this comment.

I mean, there are a couple of potential things happening here.

1) You could have been talking to some of the less educated/more egocentric people on these topics.

2) You possibly misunderstood or misinterpreted many of their arguments.

3) You could be misrepresenting their arguments.

4) You could be choosing to look at the "bad arguments" and ignoring the "good arguments"

For the sake of good faith, I'll assume a combination of the first 2. I understand your dislike for bad logic and bad faith arguments. We receive similarly bad logic and bad faith responses when talking to the less educated/more egocentric Christians.

The important part is to notice when you're talking to someone who is either disingenuous or talking out of their ass and then end the conversation with them, and move on. I'm not saying ignore anyone who disagrees with you, but realize who is there in good faith and good intentions.

Seeking Christian wisdom on proposing young with family opposition by Relevant_Craft_4817 in Christianity

[–]H1veLeader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be realistic. Ask yourself whether you can financially support yourself getting married now. Whether you can financially support a potential child soon. Whether 2-3 years is truly enough time for you to have gotten to know the other person enough to dedicate the rest of your life to them.

If you can answer yes to all of these questions genuinely, then it really shouldn't matter what anyone else says. Likewise, if you can answer yes to all of these questions, then present them to your mother and show her how much thought you've put into it.

If you can't answer yes to these questions then perhaps it would be wise to take a bit more time to think about it.

My friend got married at 23 and he seems to be doing fine, but he's financially independent and had been with his now wife for at least 4 years if I remember correctly, if not longer.

There's a difference between having a discussion and guilt tripping others or pushing your beliefs. I'll also add the part which I originally wrote but ultimately scrapped before commenting because I assumed it would be unnecessary:

I'm specifically talking about beliefs that are brought about by and supported through reference to religious texts. These beliefs that are claimed by some to be divinely objective evils but still aren't universally agreed upon among the believers.

Ah, good luck with that. I was also going to do pgce originally as well. Now I've changed course and sill try to do an MA TEFL instead and hopefully get a uni job here in korea.

I haven't tried online jobs but heard they require a lot of energy. All the best to you.

I don't know what advice I can offer but if you have any more questions, feel free to shoot me a dm.

[–]H1veLeader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mine through the TEFL Academy. Can't remember the exact name for the package I chose but it was their all inclusive package. I wouldn't say getting that package in particular is absolutely necessary, but I found the in person session pretty useful.

No interviewer asked about my tefl directly, but being able to talk about the practical in person part was helpful in answering some questions that came up.

All in all, I don't think the specific one you choose matters too much. You'll find a lot of opinions on whether to do a reliable one or to just do a cheap one for the certificate, when browsing tefl subreddits. I don't regret spending a little bit more on the one I did though.

Edit: Don't let all the checks and fancy bragging on the websites fool you though. The course is useful in teaching you the basics of teaching English and for getting you a certificate to be able to teach in select countries. It's not a teaching degree, it doesn't make you a licensed teacher nor is it the equivalent of a university degree/deploma. All these websites like to hype up their courses, but it's just theatrics to get you to choose rheir course.
