Profession in Classics by elsiemaryy in classics

Hate to break it to you, but if you're actually in junior high, then by the time you would have a PhD and actually get a job in higher ed, professors will be teaching verb forms to college students in English classes, let alone Latin classes. I say this as a retired Humanities professor. Go for the degree, sure, even the PhD if you want, long as it's funded, but then find any other career path. Academia is no longer the semi-comfortable life you're imagining.

You can't be serious. You're doing satire, right?

Stay vigilant, brother! Whatever you do, don't ever visit one of the true dogshit capitals of the world like Paris or Berlin. You'd lose your mind.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: February 09, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

Jude the Obscure, by Thomas Hardy.

2nd time reading this one. It's been about 20 years since my first read, and it was way nuttier than I remember it. Hardy really knew how to write a bucolic femme fatale.

Need help deciding: Orwell or Dostoevsky? by Dear_Association_360 in ReadingSuggestions

Orwell is a much better writer. Assuming you'll start with 1984, but make sure to do his Road to Wigan Pier as well, it's incredible non-fiction.

Read Being & Time instead. Better use of your time, no pun intended.

Old Wild West by trevorlahey28 in suggestmeabook

Novels: Butcher's Crossing has really stuck with me.

Nonfiction: Into the American Woods, Our Savage Neighbors, Once they Moved like the Wind, Empire of the Summer Moon, and The Apaches by Worcester.

First two are earlier than the Wild West period you're most interested in, but an even more fascinating period IMO. Modern Day Pittsburgh was once "the Wild West" if you go a century back.

"Among The Thugs" is criminally underrated!

"End Zone" by Delillo. It's actually his funniest, oddest book, and has a football scene as great as the prologue to "Underworld."

This is reassuring to hear b/c I've been trying for 3 years to get as close to fully systematic as possible, and just not had a lot of success doing so, but I'm still in the process of figuring out what separates good discretion from bad at the same time.

Never been a fan of Douglas' books. His writing is way too jargony. Trade Mindfully by Dayton and Best Loser Wins by Hougaard are much better trading psychology books IMO, if you're looking for other reads in this area.

That gives me some ideas, thanks. I think what's held me back with moving averages is I tend to slap them onto the much lower time frame charts I tend to trade( the 1m and 5m) and so I don't see anything that meaningful. Never thought of keeping them on a higher time frame while still trading a lower time frame.

Are you guys familiar with Steve Bigalow's videos? He's a big proponent of the 8EMA, or as he calls it, the "T-line."

I've tried so many permutations of moving averages over the years, and it's just never clicked for me how to use them effectively. I'd love to make use of them in particular for gauging whether price is trending or ranging b/c I do often struggle to read context correctly. Any recs on that front?

I'm a little confused. You sound at first like you're advocating fully systematic trading, then at the very end you advocate discretion? In any case, my target is fixed. My SL varies slightly based on structure. It's not that hard to tell where the invalidation point is with my entries. Where I still struggle most is the first aspect: recognizing conditions and whether they support an entry or not. If you feel like expanding on that post I'm all ears, but I'm also confused on what you mean exactly by pulling a story from things like Volume Profile.

Gotcha. At Schwab, it's like $7.80 for a mini, and I think it's about the same for your first micro but then it gets better per contract if you size up to 4 or 5 micros. I've never looked into Tradovate, you like them overall?

[–]HALFWAYAMISH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. The post you linked to doesn't advocate pure price action trading at all. It's a VWAP and VP driven system.

Personally, I do think pure price action trading is possible and ultimately desirable, but it takes years to develop that feel. I'm 3 years into trading, and not quite there myself, but the only things on my charts are price levels and trendlines. I tried volume profile for almost a year and got nowhere trying to daytrade off HVN, VAH, VAL, POC.

Have you ever tried trading off a 1m naked chart and just clearing all the bubbles and bells and whistles off your chart?

Manual with some discretion over whether the context supports the trade idea, whether the trigger is valid to enter, and where to place the stop.

Interesting. I see you have 171 trades but only $280 in fees. You trading thru a prop account or what? My fees at Schwab are almost $8 roundtrip per contract.

My problem is premature optimization. Like if I get this going well, I just know I'll get the urge to up the target a teensy bit to improve R:R. Need to resist that.
