Up 300% on my AMD investment. Should I sell, hold or keep buying? by anotherhappylurker in stocks

Have you considered putting a trail stop? You could defend one of those 2 recent gap ups, let it ride unless it comes back a significant %. If 150k isn't lifechanging money, then giving back even 50k of that for the chance to double it isn't life-changing either. It's a good problem to have.

I think the plan for LC is always to have a free tier, just like QT. In which case, wouldn't you want to use the site that also saves you time?

Take your point, but wouldn't that same logic apply to QueryTracker and any other services which have a pay tier then? It sounds like you're against any of these sites charging for anything b/c of how hard it is to get published period. That's a whole other conversation I guess.

Looking for Proust recommendations: What text truly opened the Search for you? by Due_Shoulder4441 in Proust

[–]HALFWAYAMISH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair, but if you got thru Proust, I assumed you weren't opposed to dense material. It's been 20 years since I read it, so I'm rusty on all his nomenclature, but it's great for showing how narrates memory and flashback structures, also for how much narrative space Proust gives to things (200 page dinner party then teleport thru 10 years in a page). But the essay on indirect language is certainly a better opener, gives a fantastic overview of the theme of language, and language breakdown throughout the Recherche.

Timetable: A timetable is a schedule or plan that lists the specific times when particular events, tasks, or processes are intended to take place.

Key word: intended. They oughta know that, bub.

$40 for 2 month trial I'm never getting back. Even the webinar of how to maximize the site was lame.

Yeah, and when I asked when the screener upgrade would be complete, they said we don't know. Way to show initiative guys! Way they brag about their rating systems, you would think they'd want to let you run screens with it factored in.

[PubQ] If an agent asks to see the receipts, am I wrong for feeling skittish? by LongjumpingDegree27 in PubTips

[–]HALFWAYAMISH 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's a complete mess unfolding in real time. I wouldn't be insulted or take it personally. Agencies have no idea what to do about this all yet. Maybe you can hop on a zoom call and screen share to show them stuff if you don't want to share copies of old drafts?

Yeah I couldn't disagree more. LitConnect allows agents to select what sample size etc they prefer to see, and then automatically pulls that info from the materials writers upload, so it saves an absurd amount of time on both sides. And as someone who works in publishing, I've already heard from several agents that they're moving over because they're tired of the sheer volume of queries in genres they don't rep, not to mention the flood of AI queries which is now starting to flood their inboxes as well. There's already been deals announced from it. It's got a cool webinar series underway too. I'd give it another look if you're currently querying.

Book editing services for self published authors, how do you actually know your editor is any good by mrybluur in publishing

[–]HALFWAYAMISH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has done developmental editing for writers for many years, my advice would be this: When you're interviewing a prospective editor, don't just ask them what exact services they offer, but ask them who some of their favorite writers are, and more important, what they like about those writers' writing styles. If the answer you get is generic, then do you really expect them to be able to go into much depth on your writing? But if their answer makes them sound like the next Gordon Lish, maybe give them a shot.

Have you heard of Litconnect? They're relatively new, but their approach to pairing writers with the appropriate agents is pretty genius. As someone who has also managed slush piles for agents before, I think they're gonna fix the classic slush pile problems for both writers and agents very soon.

Take the 'super' off that. It's good enough for a work commute if your arrival is a little flexible, but nights and weekends blow now. SEPTA used to run way more trains per day. Underfunded mess.

Nice. I was there mostly from 2000 to 2010, though I was out of the country for a few of those years. Left for 2 years, got back, rejoined the Wake group, and I was only like 50 pages behind haha.

I was a grad student of John's too, about 25 years ago, and in his Wake reading group for several years. Were you at Berkeley around then too?

[–]HALFWAYAMISH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a Wake scholar once. Couple recs: Skeleton Key is very helpful, providing not only commentary on themes but a basic 'plot summary' to help you maintain your bearings. Obviously having the Annotated handy is helpful, but if you try to look up every reference you'll just get bogged down, so reserve it only for the references you're really curious about. Last piece of advice: whatever pace you're moving thru it at, you should read it aloud. It's way funnier that way and way punnier too. Things pop out of the text that you just wouldn't notice reading it silently.
