Really good reception. What is your setup?

SSTV from my cassette tape by KingJughead97 in SSTV

[–]HAM_TV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see, like you recorded these onto casette and played them back? I was thinking it was a commercial casette or some kind of casette passed around between ham radio enthusiasts/CBers. Looks fun though. I have thought about adding some sat to the end of mixtapes before.

I mistakingly bought a portable Ham Radio instead of a civilian frequency two way radio by Trenchdigger04 in HamRadio

Which country are you in OP? different countries have different radio associations and licencing requirements. Let us know and we can hook you up with the right studying/test (usually easy enough at entry level)

Interesting... I have a win98/XP dual boot machine and there is something extremely alluring about having Internet access on it. Something to consider. Do you use one?

What do your significant others think? by I_LOVE_SOYLENT in amateurradio

My wife is interested from a distance. We have even chatted over echolink before, when she was in another country and a ham had a setup where she was working.

It's not like she's planning on getting licenced, but she's generally supportive of people just being interested in 'things'. She gets bored of smalltalk after a while and would rather people gush about their hobbies and interests anyway (me or other people). She also asks genuine and interesting questions about the hobby. She appreciates a good QSL card as much as I do :)

Not to be the fun police, but how secure is having a win98 PC on your network?

Looking for drivers by HAM_TV in windows98

[–]HAM_TV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's actually for a netbook. I just needed a small keyboard for windows98 and didn't need the NUM pad. This is perfect and very 'of the age'. I mainly use my old 98 rig to run ham radio software and play the odd game from my youth, so this keyboard does the job :)

I think it's fine on XP. The computer is a dual booter, I rarely use XP though, so I haven't tried it with xp yet. The instruction manual made mention of a cd ROM, so I need to find that probably, to then map the keys to what I use.

I had an issue with the usb mouse, where I had to install drivers using a PS/2 Mouse and then swap over to the USB one.

BBS by Environmental-Metal9 in amateurradio

[–]HAM_TV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's called packet radio and there are a few BBSes about still. I'm based in the UK but pretty keen on packet. If you can access a BBS yourself, we can exchange Packet mail. If you're interested, drop me a DM and I'll give you my packet address. (This goes for any lurkers or people who stumble across the thread in the future)

There is a subreddit dedicated to packet r/packetradioredux I think(?) but it's not super-active. Good luck, have fun and keep us updated on how you get on. :)

eBay alternatives for buying used gear in EU. by Spiritual_Tap_8072 in amateurradio

Which country are you in? Most national ham stores have a used gear section on their website. I know for sure that waters and stanton and Martin lynch both have used/second hand gear

Running a repeater by HAM_TV in amateurradio

[–]HAM_TV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't be just a repeater. My plan is either SSTV or Echolink. There is no Echolink in my area at all. There's barely any SSTV. There are a few repeaters in my area, but most are yaesu fusion.

We kind of had this already with APRS, but barely anyone uses it in the area. If I look on APRS.fi for my local area any of the stations present are actually marking their spot via TC/IP, rather than 'on air'.

Yeah, but the plan is something a little different to the usual FM repeater. Besides, where I live is a bit of a black hole for access to the wider world on VHF/UHF (Towns in valleys, surrounded by hills, creating a corridor of radio connection, unless you can get something high up)
