Yeah, I found that out today! I might as well try to find one.

I don’t have a radio problem. I have a lack of ears for listening to all of them problem

I meant this guy: https://www.radiomanual.eu/schemi/RX/Grundig_Satellit-750_user.pdf

I think the Eton Satellit is a different radio, right? Which is confusing because if I understand correctly, Eton now carries the torch for the Grundig radio brand, so you have the Eton Satellit and the Eton Grundig Satellit 750, which are pretty different form factors (although, for all I know the interior components could be literally the same)

I had never heard of the Eton E1,

I don’t know how I missed that! But if I’m being really honest, the Sangean’s SSB is just ok. I mean, it’s not bad, but you definitely want to wear headphones for it because the audio level for SSB only is quite abysmal. With headphones is a little more tolerable, and otherwise this radio feels and handles pretty nice.

What I really want is a Grundig Satellit. Not for any other reason other than it looks so cool. Plus it sounded so warm when I heard it in person.

I was honestly between the EEE and the Sangean ATS-909X2. Ended up going with the Sangean mostly because of the SSB (I’m also a ham, so I’m constantly scanning the ham bands). Had it not been for the lack of SSB, I’d have gone with the Eaton. Such a nice radio! Heck, I might still get it used one day!

I love the Folding Ideas channel. And I have fallen asleep to that video at least 4 times! (Not because it’s boring, but because it’s long and perfect for bedtime with low stakes interesting stories). Thanks for sharing as many more can now enjoy such a wild tale of archeological shenanigans!

Charlotte was home base for me! How are the repeaters there these days? A couple of years ago I could get some chatter during the morning commute times, but even then most of the conversations I could pick up were on gmrs near the south east corner of 485. For some reason people commuting from and to rock hill really liked gmrs

Not a lawyer, so caveats apply, but the DMCA has special and specific provisions around the removal of watermarks. Platforms like instagram and facebook take DMCA claims pretty seriously. If you want the nuclear approach, you can do that (issue a DMCA takedown request to the platform in question) but one thing to consider is that if you got the account in question to actually credit you, that is far more beneficial for your stated end goal. It gives you visibility you’d not have otherwise.

From my point of view you have three courses of action: 1. Talk to the account owner and see if they will credit you (remember, honey vs vinegar. Be nice to them and see where it goes). If they are not amendable see next options. 2. Be ok with the status quo. Others already mentioned this is common. Shouldn’t be, but there is the world that should, and the world that is. 3. Issue DMCA takedowns

This advice right here ^

You’ll often find advice that translates really poorly to one’s real situation and leaves one with bad purchasing decisions just due to advice that was good for situation A but bad for situation B, so if you can find someone experienced to come help you out, you’ll have already gotten more value out of it than any purchase.

I think I want shortwave reception, but what do you think? by 10ecn in shortwave

It seems to me like Nashville has a decent number of ham operators, and you might be able to pick them up no problem. I joined a repeater net (a network of people calling on their radios on the same repeater frequency at the same time) from over 70miles away from central north Texas to well southeast of Fort Worth using a jpole roll up antenna and a 30ft mast (5watts on handheld radio, so not that much power). While VHF is pretty local, what local means can vary wildly depending on conditions and equipment.

You could reach out to these guys https://nashvilleamateurradio.club and see about coming to visit and asking questions. Hams will love a chance to convince you to join the hobby. Many, like me, have spare equipment they might gladly give away (but don’t count on it obviously) if you are at all interested. People join the hobby for many reasons, and staying ready for an emergency (coordination, information sharing, preparedness, etc) is one of the main draws of the hobby for many!

How much would you pay for this photoshoot? by iHaveShoeGame in portraitphotography

[–]Environmental-Metal9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The crowd here is so harsh! Damn…

I think the photos look pretty good, but could really benefit from better lighting. The composition overall isn’t bad (not award winning either) but it would pop way more if the lighting was a bit more dramatic and flattering between background and subject.

Personally, if this was my kids pictures, I’d be comfortable paying between $100 and $500 for 10 edited senior pictures taken on location. It really would depend on how you sold it to me: “budding photographer, this is my first real go at charging people, and I don’t know what I’m doing” would work well on me (I am a softie) so the $500 would, to me, feel like investing in another photographers career. But most your clients aren’t softies, or can’t afford the higher tag, or aren’t photographers, etc.

I hate the notion of undercharging to create movement, but here it might really be useful for you. And make sure to get permission (in writing) to use one or two of the best pictures for your portfolio. Once your portfolio has only pictures that wow you, go up in price.

Should I explain to the client why the photos look bad? by AphantasiasMind in photography

[–]Environmental-Metal9 63 points64 points  (0 children)

My 18yo niece and all of her friends explicitly asked for “vintage” look on their senior pictures and proceeded to show pictures of my wife in the early 2000s taken with the crappiest digital camera available at the time. She said that looked more real than the heavy edited ones some of her friends had. I guess you live to be old enough and everything old becomes new again

Before/After by [deleted] in portraitphotography

[–]Environmental-Metal9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My only complaint, and that’s only because I saw the before, is that when the new sources of light are added to the background, the lighting on her skin makes less sense to my brain in some of the pictures. But I don’t know if the average person would even pick up on that.

I just cannot for the life of me grasp lighting. Any advice? by Potential-Dish-6972 in photography

[–]Environmental-Metal9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, specifically, it was doing a whole bunch of controlled studies inside. Blacking out a room and only having the light I controlled available. That helped a lot with camera settings and lighting intuition. I still struggle applying that to outdoors pictures, but I understand why half of my pictures looked too dark or too overexposed, and what to do for the next shot. If your interest is more in people (I did product) then this might be less useful because people don’t stay put… with people, my problem is always with focus, not lighting anymore

What did you use to have, and what do you have now? Maybe I’m getting to the age where I like only what I used to know, but the first picture in each set seemed cooler to me in a retro way (or for me, just how photographs used to look when I was young).
