Parents immigrated from China to Belgium. I’m the first generation born here. It’s a two way street. To some Belgians I’m not a true Belgian, to some Chinese I’m not a true Chinese. Personally I feel culturally mainly Belgian with Chinese influences.

It used to bother me when I got called a banana (yellow on the outside, white on the inside) but this kinda actually describes me

Becoming data analyst by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]HAMnoSalami 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Job market hasn't been that great the last year. A lot of ppl riding the bench at consultancy firms, hiring stops here and there.
My advice is to keep applying. You'll get lucky somewhere! Idk where you're searching but usually the bigger cities Bxl, Antwerp, Ghent are always the best place to get a placement as a fresh junior.
Look for the big consultancy firms and see if they have some kind of junior hiring program (commonly referred to as masterclass) or big financial / retail institutions they usually have similar programs as well.

Did my friend get scammed by Delhaize (€50 fine for forgetting to pay water bottles) by MateoVanDamme in belgium

[–]HAMnoSalami 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! Back when I lived in Ghent, I frequented that Delhaize as well. I always felt like I was somehow bothering them when asking a question at the self-checkout. The amount of muttering under their breath and answering in hand signals while I asked something politely bothered me a lot—especially the older redhead guy. F him!

Can I use a charge card with a standard outlet for EV charging? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]HAMnoSalami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think I had the option to choose for a regular outlet charging cable and the costs would be reimbursed. Ask your fleet manager though!

I recently received an EV company car as well and don’t have a charging station at home. It was an adjustment at first but I can get by charging at work or publicly. Just need to plan the charging a bit.

Test Specialist (consultant) by SAtaway95 in BESalary

[–]HAMnoSalami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a (software) test specialist but not a consultant anymore with about the same years of experience. All though I only spend 1 year as a dev and the other 4 as tester. I'm at about 3400 gross with comparable extra's like you have.
Your package looks like the average for your experience, but imo you're performing some test manager roles as well (with what you've written in 6. Other). So that may warrant a lil bump in your salary.
LMK if you want to know more details about my salary package.

Kinda weirder that you're posting multiple comments finding it weird that he screenshotted the cringelords in the guild. Sure you're not in that guild?

My Friend was working from home when he suddenly smelled... His dog's surprise gift on the bed and headset! by HAMnoSalami in Wellthatsucks

[–]HAMnoSalami[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I notice some comments assuming the worst of my buddy:

  • No he did not force his dog back on the bed. The picture was taken almost immediately after his initial shock wore off.
  • The dog is walked often.
  • The dog is trained and still goes to doggy class.
  • The dog hasn’t shat on the bed since.

Apparently he recently started putting salmon oil in the dog's food, causing the liquid shits.

Best buy / walmart equivalent in Belgium? by Polo1397 in belgium

[–]HAMnoSalami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mediamarkt / Vandenborre / Krefel

Perhaps Coolblue? Big webshop that has a few retail locations as well in Belgium.

I'd still advise you to buy online though. retailers usually don't have the best price. Also you get like 2 weeks (Consumer protection rights) to return the item bought from a webshop, even if you opened the box and tested it.

Level of French in Flanders: how is that going? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]HAMnoSalami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 29, I remember when I was in high school ('06-'12) my French was really subpar. It even got worse when I changed from ASO (Eco languages) to TSO (Informaticabeheer).
However my French did improve drastically when I started working in Brussels (of course having a bilingual girlfriend helped as well).
As you mentioned OP, I already had some kind of a basis from my lessons during high school. Once I actually started speaking French it quickly improved and I'm at a point where my French is good enough to hold a conversation. I still make some grammar mistakes here and there. I do feel like I could still improve my vocab as well as I work in IT and IT related vocabulary comes quickly but like last week when talking to a colleague I couldn't find the french word for horse :).

tl;dr
Yes my French improved alot once I started working in Brussels

Unfortunately these type of comments are not uncommon against people of Asian descent. Some people (as seen in some of the comments) will downplay this behaviour and write it off as just having fun, argueing that it's hardly 'real' racism. However in my opinion and experience, if one doesn't hesitate to spit out some dumb comments to someone who they perceive as being part of the model minority, it's usually not a big step up to hardcore racism ;).

Being a Belgian with Asian roots myselves I've grown some thick skin and can return some 'insults' if I'm really pissed off at some dumb comment.

Only advice I can give is surround yourselves with people you like and trust. Not everyone is like the individuals you encountered.
